Controversial film-maker Spike Lee has been accused of "exploiting" lesbian lifestyles and pandering to "male sexual fantasies" in his new movie She Hates Me. The film revolves around a young, professional African-American man - played by 8 Mile actor Anthony Mackie - who makes a living by impregnating black lesbians desperate to have a child for $10,000 a time. Prominent lesbians have hit out at the comedy, labeling its portrayal of lesbian life "extremely harmful and lacking in complexity". Black author Rosalind Lloyd says, "There is an obvious fine line between exploitation and visibility for us as lesbians and lesbians of color in this film. Real authentic lesbians will not sleep with men for any reason at all." But the Do The Right Thing star has hit back at the criticism, claiming the film was popular with most lesbians, black or not. He says, "There's no way in the world you can make a film that every lesbian likes. Lesbians are like any other group, they're not monolithic". In addition to portraying negative stereotypes, critics have also slammed the film for implying that sex is the only way for a lesbian to get pregnant in the 21st century and failing to mention methods such as adoption and artificial insemination.
