Jason Statham Developing Action Film With STX, China's Tencent Pictures (Exclusive)
Jason Statham has signed a deal with STX Entertainment and Tencent Pictures, the fast-growing film arm of Chinese internet giant Tencent, to co-develop an action film targeting the Chinese film market, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

Statham will produce and star in the project, which is expected to be set up as an official China co-production. Details of the film's story and concept are still under development.

There has been a lot of back-and-forth between the studio and Affleck, with this latest report claiming the studio is "sour" on Ben. Sebastian Maniscalco will join Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in the real-life drama Green Book.

Green Book follows an Italian-American bouncer, Tony Lip, (Mortensen), who in 1962 is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), one of the world’s finest jazz pianists, on a concert tour from New York City through the pre-Civil Rights era Deep South. They had to use the Negro Motorist Green Book to guide them to the few motels, restaurants and gas stations below the Mason-Dixon Line that served black customers.

Maniscalco will play Tony's fast-talking brother-in-law, Johnny.

Peter Farrelly will direct from a script he wrote with Nick Vallelonga and Brian Currie.

Sundance: HBO Buys ‘Price of Everything’
HBO Documentary Films has nabbed “The Price of Everything,” a look at the world of contemporary art, in advance of its Sundance Film Festival debut.

Directed by Oscar-nominated director Nathaniel Kahn, “The Price of Everything” examines the headaches associated with pricing art and the vagaries of a market based around subjective opinions of what is hot and valuable. It looks at collectors, dealers, auctioneers and artists in weaving together its cultural and commerical tapestry, and features interviews with the likes of Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Larry Poons.

The company has acquired U.S. TV rights to the film and will also open it in theaters in at least a dozen U.S. markets prior to its premiere on HBO. It debuts in Sundance on Jan. 19. Kahn previously worked with HBO on his 2004 documentary “My Architect” and his short “Two Hands.”

Creed has found his opponent.

German-Romanian boxer Florian Munteanu will square off against Michael B. Jordan in Creed 2, MGM and Warner Bros.’ sequel to the 2015 hit that updated Rocky for a new generation, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Steven Caple will direct the movie, which is set to begin shooting in March in Philadelphia.

Creed starred Sylvester Stallone as boxer Rocky Balboa, who mentors Adonis Johnson (Jordan), the son of his rival, Apollo Creed.

Academy sticks with two-part Oscar nominations format

The Academy said on Tuesday (January 16) that in keeping with recent years, the 90th Academy Awards nominations in all 24 Oscar categories will be announced in a two-part, live presentation on January 23,

The process will go out via global live stream on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s digital platforms, a satellite feed and local broadcasters.

The announcement will combine live presentations from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, with pre-taped category introductions, which will be featured in the first half of the announcement.

At 5:22am Pacific Time the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed in no particular order): cinematography, costume design, film editing, make-up and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short film, live action short film, sound editing, sound mixing, and visual effects.

Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures has moved back its wide release on “Hostiles,” starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26.

Distribution chief Mark Borde said that Esmp wants to give itself another week to build strong word of mouth on the historical drama, which opened on Dec. 22 and has grossed $885,341 at 42 locations. It will expand into five additional markets on Jan. 19.

“It’s working very well and we are very pleased with grosses to date,” he added.

The film, directed by Scott Cooper from his own script, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Esmp acquired the movie in October from producer Ken Kao’s Waypoint Entertainment.
