Could Hellboy III Eventually Find A Home At Legendary Pictures?

18 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There.s a lot riding on the box office earnings of Guillermo Del Toro.s $200 million .robots vs. monsters. tentpole flick Pacific Rim, both for the filmmakers and for Legendary Pictures, the production company that footed the majority of the inflated budget. Legendary.s eight-year partnership with Warner Bros. is coming to an end soon . even with non-guaranteed hits like Godzilla and 300: Rise of an Empire coming next year . so the company would be wise to quickly latch itself onto a franchise it can call its own, should any of these films fail to match expectations. Could that potential franchise Del Toro.s Hellboy series? Call us cautiously optimistic about this one. ShockTilYouDrop shared some interview tidbits shared by both Del Toro and Hellboy/Pacific Rim star Ron Perlman. Del Toro was understandably less inclined to be overly positive about the prospects. .I hate giving pieces away about it, »

Kristen Wiig: Turning down 'Bridesmaids' sequel 'wasn't a hard decision'

18 hours ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

In summer 2011, Bridesmaids took the box office by storm, and talk immediately turned to a sequel. The studio wanted it and fans wanted it, but the one person who wanted nothing to do with it was writer/star Kristen Wiig.

Fast-forward almost two years, and Wiig stands by that choice.

“It wasn’t a hard decision,” she told Harper’s Bazaar for a profile in the July issue. “We knew during the first one, this was it. We would have made a lot of money if there was a second one, but that’s not my goal in my creative life. »

Czech Biz Encourages Incentives

18 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Czech industryites say they are worried that the slowly returning tide of foreign productions could fall off again if politicos don’t pony up more coin for incentives.

A rare bright spot amid the Eurozone crisis has been Prague shoots of projects such as “Child 44” and BBC skein “Musketeers” (above) but the Audiovisual Producers Association revealed at the Karlovy Vary fest on Sunday that unless Czech incentives rise to $40 million annually, business could well be lost to Hungary, where there’s no cap on the kitty.

The Czech system differs from Hungary’s, offering cash back on spends rather than tax breaks, and proponents have been grappling with how to handle multi-year productions such as cable series “Borgia,” now in its third season at Barrandov, repping a 10-month shoot that started in May. With the annual incentives pot currently at $25 million with much of next year’s total likely to »

'The Hobbit': Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom film final scenes

19 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Sir Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom have filmed their final scenes in the Hobbit trilogy.

The pair, who have played Gandalf and Legolas respectively since 1999, will appear for the last time as the characters in There and Back Again, which is due to be released next year.

McKellen filmed his last ever scene on Friday (June 28) in the presence of director Peter Jackson, while Bloom wrapped filming on Saturday.

Jackson posted a picture of himself with McKellen on his Facebook page, with the caption: "Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now."

A day later, the director posted a video of Bloom singing along to the 2007 viral video 'They Are Taking the Hobbits to Isengard'.

The new video has attracted over three million views in the last 24 hours.

Karlovy Vary Film Review: ‘Killing Season’

19 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The sight of Robert De Niro and John Travolta sharing the screen for the first time reps the one and only selling point of “Killing Season,” a cartoonishly violent drama routinely helmed by Mark Steven Johnson (“Daredevil”). The actors play troubled vets of the Balkan wars — De Niro a U.S. colonel, Travolta a member of the infamous Serbian Scorpions — who find that a literal and metaphorical spilling of guts is just the thing to exorcise their war demons. Millennium Entertainment will hedge its bets for this gory, arrow-in-cheek actioner with a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release Stateside on July 12.

Given that offensiveness massively outweighs entertainment in this two-hander, replete with graphically and gleefully depicted torture, it seems odd that the project attracted two stars of this caliber. Perhaps to justify his choice of a darker role, Travolta has been gamely supporting the pic with pre-release personal appearances in a variety of prestige venues, »

Weekend Box Office: Monsters University On Top Again As The Heat Roasts White House Down

20 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Channing Tatum... Jamie Foxx... Sandra Bullock... Melissa McCarthy... Those were the big names being tossed around television and internet commercials this week, but they didn't grab as much attention as two others: Mike and Sully. For a second week in a row Monsters University stood at the front of the box office class, adding $46 million to its $171 million domestic and $300 million international totals. With only a 44% drop from last weekend, the sequel is showing more staying power than most other Pixar films have, and while its sales are out pacing that of Monsters Inc., total tickets sold is still lower than they were for when factoring in inflation to the numbers for the now eleven year-old predecessor. Fem buddy cop comedy The Heat opened in a close second place with $40 million. That's pretty exceptional for an untested genre starring an unlikely, albeit well-known, pair of leading ladies, and from a »

It’s still got a long way to go to profitability. But at least Brad Pitt’s zombie pic World War Z isn’t the dud everybody thought it would be. Paramount announced today it’s the #1 film worldwide this weekend with $100M international grosses and $263M global box office after just 10 days in release. The PG-13 film co-financed with David Ellison’s Skydance Productions in association with Hemisphere Media Capital and Gk Films grossed a big $70.1M foreign this weekend to bring the international cume to a strong $135.3M. Domestically the film earned $29.8M in its second weekend, with a cume to date of $123.7M. With approximately one-third of the international market still to release, the roll-out continues next week with France and then Spain and Japan opening later this summer.  Directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Drew Goddard & Damon Lindelof, this pic »

Dishman did not reveal the cause of the star's death in the post.

The actor and martial artist became popular after starring alongside Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon in 1973.

Kelly became a professional tennis coach after putting an end to his acting career, and he made very few on-screen appearances after he left acting in 1983.

Arthouse Audit: 'I'm So Excited' Scores Decent Opening, 'Museum Hours' Is Surprise Success

22 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Summer isn't the usual launchpad for subtitled films, but this weekend two June openers both show promise. One is from the most consistently successful foreign language director, Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited," which Sony Pictures Classics opened solidly, if below his usual level. The much less-heralded "Museum Hours" (Cinema Guild) scored an above-average per screen average in two New York theaters. Both should gain attention across the country in upcoming weeks. Among the multiple films that have widened out, none shows signs of breaking out, but Spc's "Before Midnight" has at least managed to stabilize at a respectable level with a reduced theater count. Radius/Weinstein's "20 Feet from Stardom" remains the strongest of the more limited releases. Opening "I'm So Excited" (Sony Pictures Classics) - Criticwire grade: B-; Metacritic score: 59; Festivals include: Los Angeles 2013 $103,000 in 5 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $20,600 Although this opened to a lower PSA than. »

'Monsters U' Repeats, 'The Heat' Sets Fire to 'White House'

22 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Proving once again that women do, in fact, like going to the movies, The Heat got off to a very strong start this weekend. The weekend's other new movie, White House Down, failed to differentiate itself from March's Olympus Has Fallen and wound up collapsing under the weight of all of the other appealing options in the market. Still, it was Pixar's Monsters University in first place once again over another busy Summer weekend. The animated prequel dipped 44 percent to an estimated $46.2 million for a 10-day total of $171 million. That's a slightly better hold than Toy Story 3 (46 percent) or Brave (49 percent), and was way better than Cars 2 (60 percent). If it doesn't get completely obliterated by Despicable Me 2 this week, Monsters University should ultimately be able to get close to $300 million. Playing at 3,181 locations, The Heat took second place with an estimated $40 million. That's star Sandra Bullock's »

'Despicable Me 2' Retains Original's Charm--and Minions

22 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

A half hour into “Despicable Me 2,” I had no idea what the story was. I didn’t care very much – directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud obviously knew that regular doses of Minion magic would mollify even the most nettlesome demand for a storyline– but the prospect of having to write a plot summary was making me crazy. You know what? Ultimately, it’s just a love story – which doesn’t separate it all that much from its big-hit predecessor, 2010’s “Despicable Me,” in which the nefarious Gru (short for gruesome? I forget) tried to steal the moon, while three orphan girls stole his heart (sorry, that was weak…). The problem with “DM2,” if it is in fact a problem, is that the character in need of reformation – and ripe for it -- has already been reformed: Gru has remade his arsenal of fearsome weaponry into amusements for his girls, »

Why ‘White House Down’ Doesn’t Measure Up for Channing Tatum

22 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The pretty-boy image of Channing Tatum may have gotten its first major box office blemish.

White House Down,” Sony’s big-budget action film from helmer Roland Emmerich, starring Tatum and Jamie Foxx, failed to excite audiences this weekend, grossing just $25.7 million from 3,222 domestic locations. That’s a troubling start considering the film cost upwards of $150 million (not including worldwide marketing).

But it’s an especially tough pill to swallow for Tatum, who has had a string of recent hits, including “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “21 Jump Street,” “The Vow” and “Magic Mike.” In fact, every major studio film that Tatum has toplined since 2011 has gone on to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office.

It seems “White House Down” may end that streak for the hunky star.

Answers to the Guess the Movie Title Game

I probably could have waited to post the following graphic on Monday and had more takers, but I never intended to post it in the first place as it merely came out of the result of me working on a new feature for the site. That said, many of you still got in the game and I had a lot of fun on Twitter last night with people guessing some of the more difficult titles. As it turns out, it was numbers 13, 19, 22 and 23 that gave people the most trouble, 13 proving to be the hardest of the lot as only Andre Marques got that right in the comments (as of 9 Am Pst this morning) and one person on Twitter last night finally guessed it after several hints and attempts. I applaud all of you for your efforts! I was astonished how many people got #33 correct and quite honestly, surprised any of you got #22. That said, »

Mars' Yildirim and Rieder talk Turkey growth

23 hours ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

The Turkish exhibitor, honoured at CineEurope last week, aims to reach 1000 screens by 2016.

Muzaffer Yildirim [pictured] of Turkish exhibitor Mars Entertainment Group was honoured last week as CineEurope’s International Exhibitor of the Year.

It’s hard to argue with the choice — the company’s growth is unparalleled among exhibitors around the world. It started with 8 screens in 2001 and now has 503 screens in 59 multiplexes, set to grow to 600 screens by the end of the year. It is the largest exhibitor in Turkey, which is a booming growth market. The goal is 1000 screens by the end of 2016. Yildirim says simply: “There is so much potential in Turkey.”

It’s not just about numbers of screens, as Mars has also revolutionized the quality of cinemas in Turkey, offering bigger seat size, trailer displays in lobbies and toilets and event cinema offerings including live 3D football.

When the company started, Yildirim told Screen, “existing cinema seats were uncomfortable, foyers were dark »

Jim Kelly, who made his name alongside martial arts legend Bruce Lee in the classic 1973 action film "Enter the Dragon," has died according to Film.com. He was 67.

A football star at the University of Kentucky, Kelly dropped out to pursue martial arts. After winning a championship in 1971 and opening his own dojo, he came to the attention of Hollywood filmmakers and made his debut in "Enter the Dragon," becoming an instant superstar.

Kelly parlayed that success into a decade of blaxploitation hits, including the seminal 1974 hit "Three the Hard Way" alongside Fred Williamson and Jim Brown. He retired from movies in 1982, though he still appeared occasionally in cameo roles and at conventions.
