Screenwriter Max Landis Gives Status Update on Chronicle 2; Says It’s a “Really Dark Script”
Though the news that 20th Century Fox was moving forward on a sequel to Chronicle came rather quickly after Josh Trank’s film performed very well at the box office, development on the follow-up has been fairly slow. Screenwriter Max Landis returned to pen the script, but it seemed unlikely that Trank would return to direct given that he’s next helming The Fantastic Four and is also attached to a Venom movie and Shadow of the Colossus. Last we heard re: Chronicle 2, Landis’ father John Landis claimed that Fox wasn’t happy with Max’s script and wanted “more of the same.” Now Max Landis himself has spoken up regarding the status of Chronicle 2 and also directly addressing his father's comments. Hit the jump to read on. Speaking with IGN Middle East, Landis provided an update on the status of the Chronicle sequel: “Chronicle 2 is in an interesting place right now. »

FilmDistrict Takes U.S. Rights on ‘Pompeii’
The company has set a Feb. 28, 2014 release date for the actioner through Sony’s TriStar. “Pompeii” is the first pic to be set for that date.
“Pompeii” is set in the days leading up to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and tells the tale of an enslaved gladiator — played by Harington — who faces the tyrant (Sutherland) who years before murdered his family and now threatens to steal his lover, portrayed by Browning. Jared Harris, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pingue, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Jessica Lucas round out the cast.

Jim Carrey To Star In Former James Franco Project & Black List Approved Comedy 'Ricky Stanicky'
Believe it or not, but James Franco doesn't always do everything he winds up committed to, and a couple years back you might recall he signed up to star in "Ricky Stanicky." He had just wrapped "127 Hours," but even so, the movie seemed a long way off and it seems it wound up stalling, even though the script placed on the 2010 Black List. But alas, it has come back to life with a slightly surprising new star. Jim Carrey has now boarded the movie, and, even more, his old pal Steve Oedekerk (the guy who wrote and directed "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," and penned "Bruce Almighty") will direct the flick. And oh yeah, Oedekerk will also rewrite the script by Jeff Bushell, that centers on a couple of pals who use a made-up friend as a means to get away from their spouses, for nearly two decades. However, when »

'Iron Man 3', Whedon's 'Ado' and 'Saving Mr. Banks' in Today's MPAA Ratings Bulletin
Today's MPAA ratings bulletin includes your latest PG-13 rating for a Marvel movie, this time it's Iron Man 3 with its sci-fi violence and suggestive content as well as the already released Welcome to the Punch. However, there are a couple of other interesting titles, first is Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing, which will hit theaters on June 7, but will first serve as the opening night film at the 2013 Seattle International Film Festival on May 16 with Whedon and stars Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion and Clark Gregg expected to attend the red carpet premiere. Finally we have Saving Mr. Banks from The Blind Side director John Lee Hancock starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, telling the 14-year courtship for the rights to Mary Poppins from author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson). The film is set for a December 20 release, but I wonder, with Captain Phillips coming up as another Hanks starring vehicle, »

Tom Felton, Jake Abel And Garret Dillahunt To Play WWII Navy Flyers In Ghosts Of The Pacific
Garret Dillahunt, Tom Felton and Jake Abel are taking to the skies (and the sea) for Baja Studios feature film, Ghosts of the Pacific, which will tell the true story of three World War II Navy flyers who end up adrift on the South Pacific in 1942. Making movies based on true stories from America's past is the specialty of The American Film Company, the establishment producing the film. The thriller is written by Mark David Keegan and American Film Company president Brian Falk, the latter of whom is making his directorial debut with this film, which follows three flyers who were virtual strangers to one another when they were assigned on a scouting mission near the start of 1942. The three of them end up huddled together in a 4x8-foot life raft, set adrift in the ocean after being forced to ditch their plane. It sounds like quite a story »

'Oblivion' review: Tom Cruise roams post-apocalyptic Earth
Director: Joseph Kosinski; Screenwriters: Joseph Kosinski, Karl Gajdusek, Michael Arndt; Starring: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau; Running time: 126 mins; Certificate: 12A
Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski maroons Tom Cruise on a post-apocalyptic Earth in his new science fiction epic Oblivion. Like his directorial debut this latest offering is a dazzling show of sound and vision, but could leave you with big question marks when it comes to substance.
Cruise plays Jack Harper, a drone repairman stationed high above the surface with Andrea Riseborough's sky tower controller Victoria. He makes regular trips below to maintain the robots, used to pull the last remaining resources and shoot down invaders dubbed 'Scavs'.
Years previously, aliens blasted the moon to pieces, causing chaos on Earth and a war that ended in nuclear obliteration. The survivors have found a new home on a Jupiter moon, and Jack and Victoria »
First Trailer for Elysium Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley
The first trailer for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s highly anticipated sci-fi film Elysium has been released. The story takes place in 2159 where two classes of people are roughly divided: the wealthy live on a man-made space station called Elysium, while the rest of the humans inhabit an overpopulated and ruined Earth. The trailer begins by showing us the luxurious world of Elysium before revealing the grungy, desert-like Earth. Blomkamp looks to have crafted an incredibly detailed and vast sci-fi world here, and the visuals are absolutely stunning. The action sequences look excellent as well and Damon appears to be kicking all kinds of ass, but most importantly Blomkamp has crafted yet another timely, socially-conscious story that speaks volumes to the current issues facing our world. A wholly original sci-fi property that asks audiences to think while also providing entertainment value in spades? Count me wholeheartedly in. Hit the jump to watch the trailer, »

First 'Elysium' Trailer Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster
Sony has released the first Elysium (8/9) trailer on the heels of the advance buzz created yesterday after a group of bloggers were shown footage from the film and ran home to tap out some positive thoughts on what they saw. The film comes from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp and is yet another scorched Earth film in a growing line of similarly themed films from Wall-e and Astro Boy to the upcoming Oblivion and After Earth. This one is set in the year 2159 where two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium - but that doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Press got a dose of ten minutes of footage yesterday (read our breakdown right here), along with the trailer you're about to see below. Okay, now it's time for the big show, and "Elysium" is here. What you need to know: It stars Matt Damon as Max de Costa, one of the 99%, a down on his luck ex-con looking to go straight on a ravaged and scarred Earth in the year 2154. Anne Hathaway Gets 'Interstellar' with Christopher Nolan
Hey remember way back on Thursday when we told you that Matthew McConaughey is going to star in Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi epic "Interstellar?" Well, it turns out that he's not the only one, as according to Deadline, Oscar winning actress Anne Hathaway is in talks to reunite with her "The Dark Knight Rises" director as McConaughey's co-star.
Are you ready for Catwoman in Space?
Before you get too excited, we should reiterate that there's no deal yet in place, so it's possible this one might fall through. But given Nolan's track record of putting together the smartest blockbusters in Hollywood (see: "Inception") and their working relationship, "Interstellar" would seem to be the perfect follow-up for Hathaway after her award-winning turn in "Les Miserables."
And frankly, we'd love to see what Hathaway can do in a juicy science fiction epic. Details about "Interstellar" are, of course, being treated like nuclear launch codes, »

Oh Dad, You Don't Know Nuthin! Max Landis Says 'Chronicle 2' Not Troubled; Still In Development
You've got to love the teenager who puts his out-of-touch dad on blast. Ok, that's not exactly the deal, but it's what this story comically reminds us of. It starts with Dad, venerable '80s filmmaker John Landis ("The Blues Brothers," "Trading Places," Michael Jackson's iconic "Thriller" video), saying that his son, Max Landis' sequel project, "Chronicle 2," is somewhat troubled. And it started on The Playlist. We spoke to Landis last year, and in discussing the difficulties of the film industry, the older Landis began relating examples and stories about his son, the writer behind the surprise low-budget kids-become-extraordinary film "Chronicle." “He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing," Landis told us. "And the studio read it and said, ‘we want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘no, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution,' and they said ‘no, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, »

Jim Carrey to Star in Comedy Ricky Stanicky
Jim Carrey is set to breathe new life into Summit’s long-developing comedy Ricky Stanicky. The film was initially written by Jeff Bushell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) and begins when three teens pull a prank by burning down a house in their neighborhood. The kids create a fake person to take the blame—“Ricky Stanicky”—and 20 years later are still using the alibi to get out of every uncomfortable situation. When their wives finally force them to set up a meeting with Stanicky, they hire an actor to inhabit the personality. Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls) recently came onboard to re-write and direct the film, and the ensemble comedy is said to be in the same R-rated vein as The Hangover. Hit the jump for more on the project, including details regarding Carrey’s casting. James Franco was previously attached to play the Stanicky role in 2010 and Joaquin Phoenix subsequently circled the part, »

Matt Damon Aims To Change The World In Explosive First Trailer For Elysium
It says a lot about how incredible District 9 was that we're as excited as we are for writer/director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium. The young filmmaker's debut feature was an absolutely stunning mix of blockbuster action, brilliant visual effects, and impressive political parable that launched him on to just about everybody's "must watch filmmakers" lists. And judging from his sophomore effort's first theatrical trailer, which has debuted over at Yahoo!, he aims to live up to his promise in spectacular fashion. Based on an original screenplay by Blomkamp, Elysium stars Matt Damon as Max DeCosta, a former felon living in a world heavily divided by class. While he lives on the Earth's surface with all of the other poor of the world, the richest and most powerful people of the world have shipped off to a space station known as Elysium, a perfect paradise completely devoid of all disease, »
Naked Gun Creator David Zucker Says Its Time To Reboot The Classic Comedy
David Zucker has made a great career out of spoofing some truly awful films. The writer-director-producer traces his roots back to the mother of all spoof comedies, the relentlessly brilliant Airplane!. Lately, however, he has polished his ribald jabs on the latest Scary Movie sequel. part five hits theaters on April 12. But Zucker dreams of a day, sometime soon, when he can drift back to the style of comedy he perfected in the Naked Gun films, with the dry-as-dust talents of the late Leslie Nielsen gliding through a series of inane yet not disconnected set pieces. Speaking with Hollywood.com, Zucker calls the Naked Gun style of comedy .a sane way of doing a movie,. and revealed that his next picture likely would be a spoof on popcorn blockbusters that would follow along to the tone and pattern of a Naked Gun comedy. At the same time, Zucker made it »
One Way Or Another, Will Forte Says 'MacGruber 2' Is Going To Happen
While "MacGruber" didn't exactly light up the box office a few years ago, its deranged sense of humor and outright absurdity landed the movie a devoted cult following, who have been vocal about wanting to see a sequel. And in this era of Kickstarting/rebooting everything, perhaps it's not impossible. But last summer, Will Forte wasn't so optimistic. "We would love... we had so much fun doing that. We're proud of it, and we jokingly talk about the sequel all the time. But I don't think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it. If somebody gives us money for it..." he said. But perhaps he's feeling a bit more hopeful? Or maybe he's joking again. Either way, when the actor recently chatted with EW in advance of his upcoming dramatic turn in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" "Run & Jump," the indie premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month, »

After Deliberating A Year, Jim Carrey Finally Doing ‘Ricky Stanicky’
Jim Carrey will re-team with Steve Oedekerk on the comedy Ricky Stanicky at Summit Entertainment. It was a well thought out decision. Carrey has been orbiting this one for about a year, and finally came aboard when his Ace Ventura: Pet Detective cohort Steve Oedekerk signed on. The comedy is about a group of guys who as teens created a pretend scapegoat, Ricky Stanicky, to blame things on. It is a perennial success, until their wives insist on meeting Stanicky. Carrey, last seen in Burt Wonderstone, has been taking to the web to make a Hee Haw parody about gun control that has driven the conservatives crazy. Pretty clever stuff, if you ask me. »
