Saturday Box Office Preview: Holdovers Keep Grosses on Positive Track

8 December 2012 3:45 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Lacking an early release of a Christmas blockbuster, this weekend is traditionally one of the weakest of the year. With only a single (soft) new film in play -- Millennium's Gerard Butler starrer "Playing for Keeps" (released by FilmDistrict) -- the surprise is that for Friday, the top ten actually grossed about equal to last year, with the full weekend likely ahead. Two new younger-audience releases -- "New Years Eve" and "The Sitter" -- both opened last year much better than "Playing," which looks like it won't make the top five for this weekend. The top films instead are now in their third to fifth weeks, with the oldest of the lot, "Skyfall," back to number one. The drops from last week across the board were less than seasonal norms. "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," though likely displaced from first place, fell less than 50%, while "Part 1" last year was down around 55% from its previous. »

Oscar Watch: 'Lincoln' vs. 'Zero Dark Thirty,' Whither 'Life of Pi'?

8 December 2012 2:22 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The latest Gurus 'O Gold vote is revealing. Now everyone has seen everything. And there is agreement on many fronts. As I suspected, "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Life of Pi" are getting assaulted by the muscular Big Guns of December: "Les Miserables" and critics fave "Zero Dark Thirty"--not "The Hobbit" or "Django Unchained." Something is not happening with Fox's marketing of Ang Lee's gorgeously produced "Pi," which should be hitting the Academy's sweet spot. Is it perceived as too mainstream, too family, too spiritual? The top six movies are solid. But in the actor race, Joaquin Phoenix and Nbr winner Bradley Cooper are losing ground. The actress race is all over the place, anything »

Christopher Maloney has come third in the X Factor final. The Liverpudlian had to leave the competition tonight (December 8) after receiving the fewest number of votes to win from the viewing public. He earlier performed renditions of Irene Cara's 'Flashdance... What a Feeling' and Take That's 'Rule the World' - a duet with his mentor Gary Barlow - on the show. The 34-year-old call centre worker was automatically eliminated and lost out for a place in tomorrow's final, held in Manchester, to acts James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas. After presenter Dermot O'Leary read out the result, Maloney applauded before being shown a montage of his highlights. Top 5: First Trailer and Poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit, Man Of Steel, First Django Unchained Reactions, The Dark Knight Rises

8 December 2012 1:16 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As lame as it may sound, I used this weekend's Friday night to take in my second viewing of The Dark Knight Rises. Moreover, while the last thing a picture that made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office needs is a voice in its corner, I have to say that I enjoyed Tdkr more the second-time around. While some aspects still bothered me (the final mix on Bane's voice, why Jim Gordon would carry around in his coat pocket a confession written on giant-sized paper that he knows will have dire consequences, etc.), I found other elements to be better than I remembered (scenes between Bruce Wayne and Alfred, the brutality of Bane and Batman's first fight, etc.). While it's not without its problems, I stand by my belief that Tdkr was the best superhero movie of the summer and a fitting end to a historic trilogy. Random Batman thoughts aside, »

In an interview on DeGeneres's chatshow, the actress, who gave birth in September, revealed how she and her husband Will Kopelman chose her daughter Olive's name. I was three months pregnant and they said your baby is the size of an olive, and that was it. We never looked back." DeGeneres quipped: "It could have been the since of a peanut, or a grapefruit..." But Kidney's not such a fun name," the actress deadpanned. (more) »
