How This Is Us Is Handling Death Better Than Any Other TV Show
Death is a character, not a stunt. It lives with you, eats away at you, invigorates you. It can drive you mad. It can drive you to do things you never would. Death, whether it's the fear of it or the inevitability of it, is a part of all of us, of every moment of our lives in some way or another. And this is what This Is Us has captured about death better than any other TV show in years—possibly ever. (Warning, spoilers for the Feb. 21 episode ahead.) In Tuesday night's stellar episode, William (Ron Cephas Jones) did exactly what we expected him to do from the first episode of the show, when we learned he was sick: He died. It wasn't an Omg moment. It wasn't a hashtag. It wasn't »

“It was an open mouth moment,” Ron Cephas Jones told a small group of reporters of William’s gut-wrenching death scene, following a private screening of Tuesday’s episode. “I can’t believe what I’m reading. If you feel forever changed after tonight's This Is Us, you are not alone. The hour found Randall—fresh out of the hospital after last week's mental breakdown—taking his dying biological father on a road trip to his hometown of Memphis to make amends, reminisce, and share in the black family history Randall had always dreamed of. It wasn't hard to predict what was going to happen at the end of the episode as it became clearer and clearer that William (Ron Cephas Jones) knew his time was just about to run out, and that he wasn't going back to New York with Randall (Sterling K. Brown). He had introduced his son to a whole new world, then allowed himself to die there, knowing that he had done »
