ReviewTrembling, vulnerable, and oscillating between standing up for herself and giving the marriage another chance, Aishwaya carries the film on her shoulders.Sowmya RajendranA hand lights candles slowly one by one, the flickering flame offering hope in the dark. At the end of it, we see Ammu’s glowing face. She’s the bride-to-be. Directed by Charukesh Sekar, Telugu film Ammu is a familiar story in society but not on screen. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the titular character, a young woman caught in a violent marriage. If Jasmeet K Reen’s Darlings took the route of satire to lay out the psyche of a woman who undergoes domestic violence, Ammu paints a realistic portrait of it. Circle Inspector Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra) is an upright officer who is capable of showing sensitivity to survivors of sexual violence. He’s a loving and romantic husband who takes his responsibility towards his wife seriously.

In the collection of dramas I have watched recently, Ram’s Tamil movie “Resurrection” is undoubtedly one of the most dramatic, as it uses a very “difficult” theme as its base to comment on other, equally difficult subjects.
Resurrection screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The film revolves around Amudhavan, a single father, and his 14-year-old daughter, Paapa, who suffers from Spastic Cerebral Palsy. His wife, after years of taking care of the girl on her own, has abandoned them and left with another man, and Amudhavan now has to face a task he tried to ignore the previous years. His relationship with his daughter is very hard since his initial efforts are treated with distrust and fear from Paapa, while his family and neighbors make it clear how unwelcome the child is there. Due to these circumstances, Amudhavan is forced to buy a secluded house in the country for them to leave by themselves,...

There was a general perception that Tamil cinema wasn't too kind to transgenders - but not any more. It is heartening to finally see some Tamil filmmakers portraying transgender characters with dignity. The industry may still be a while from signing transgender actors in key roles, but the change is slowly happening. In Vijay Antony's Tamil action-drama Thimiru Pudichavan, director Ganeshaa created a transgender character played by Sindhu, a transgender actress, for his police tale. Sindhu plays a police constable In the film.
"The idea was to create employability for transgender people. We hear stories of people from this community shining across professions. Why not give them opportunities in cinema? Sindhu's character was inspired by Tamil Nadu's first transgender policewoman, Prithika Yashini," Ganeshaa told Ians, adding that he received immense support from his hero.

What happens, though, when you have no such hope? When you are growing older and so is your child, but you will forever have to be a caregiver? Ram's Peranbu is a difficult film to watch. KollywoodWith her film ‘Peranbu’ about to release, Anjali Ameer, who plays a trans woman in the film, speaks of learning Tamil, being in ‘Bigg Boss’ and moreCrisThe ice breaks when I mispronounce Peranbu, the new Tamil film that’s won some pats for itself at festivals outside India, and recently in Goa. Till then Anjali Ameer had sounded serious, the wariness of speaking to a stranger over phone. But then she laughs freely, “It is Per-anbu, not Per-aan-bu. But don’t ask me the meaning. It is something like unconditional love,” she says, trailing off dreamily. For the record, Peranbu means 'great love'. She is in Chennai now, for another shooting. And Kerala-born-and-raised Anjali is already fluent in Tamil. Ask her to speak one line in Tamil, and she’d say let’s make the whole conversation in Tamil. And Peranbu is her first Tamil film, acting with a man...

KollywoodThis two-minute teaser has been titled Chapter One - Nature is ruthless.Tnm StaffYoutube ScreengrabDirector’s Ram’s Peranbu has created quite a buzz among film circles and has gained a reputation for itself with international film festival premieres. The makers have released the film’s official teaser during the audio launch that took place on Sunday. This two-minute teaser has been titled 'Chapter One - Nature is ruthless'. Amidst a scenic backdrop is a wooden cabin where this scene takes place. Mammootty who plays the father Amudhavan, is seen mimicking his daughter, Paapa’s, physical condition. This scene is almost poetic and manages to leave an impact in a very short time. Amudhavan takes on the role of a narrator who tells his own story, his own thoughts. “All these years I was worried why Paapa is not like other children. But when I tried walking like her I realised comparing one person with another is brutal." This monologue is more powerful than any visuals could hope to produce, giving us a deeper insight into the lives of caretakers, especially parents of children with disabilities. Peranbu is a bilingual film that will release in Tamil and Malayalam. Produced by Pl Thenappan under his banner Sri Rajalakshmi Films, the film has an impressive star cast with Anjali, Thanga Meengal Sadhana, Sarath Kumar, Anjali Ameer, Samuthirakani, Vadivukkarasi, Livingston, Suraj Venjaramood, Siddique and Aruldoss. While Ram has collaborated with Yuvan Shankar Raja and Na Muthukumar in the past, Vairamuthu, Karunakaran and Sumathi Ram have penned lyrics for Peranbu’s songs. The duo also fondly recalled working with lyricist Na Muthukumar, who unfortunately passed away in 2016, during the film’s audio launch. Peranbu was officially selected at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and Shanghai International Film Festival. It was also the only Indian film to feature in the top 20 in the Audience Award category at Rotterdam. It was nominated for Netpac award, an award given to best Asian films. Watch the teaser here:...
