[This story contains spoilers for Civil War.]
“The footage you’re about to see may be disturbing.” That content warning, broadcast on the news too often in modern history, was stuck on a loop in the back of my mind as I watched Alex Garland’s latest film, Civil War.
As I sat through the credits, I considered what that warning actually suggests. Yes, it’s a useful way to prepare the viewer for what they’re about to see, but it’s also an invitation to look away, to ignore, to pretend that what happened didn’t happen that way. It’s permission to avoid truth and discomfort.
So, it comes as no surprise then that Civil War should draw controversy, as it washes us, and its central characters, in discomfort with no warning, no invitation to look away, and with no tribe to cling to and tell us what’s right and what’s wrong.

Journalist/author Andy Ngo, who has reported extensively on Antifa activities, has won $300,000 in damages stemming from a 2019 attack that left him with a brain bleed.
Katherine Belyea, Madison Allen, and Sammich Overkill Schott-Deputy (formerly known as Joseph Evans) were ordered by a Portland, Oregon court to pay the damages. They never turned up to answer his charges against them.
Ngo accused the trio of provoking a mob to bash him over the head with a sign and dousing him with “milkshakes,” which Portland police said might contain quick-drying concrete.
Each of the defendants were ordered to pay $100,000. “It was a small vindication after a traumatic experience,” Ngo told the NY Post. “The judge awarded me the full amount that she could, and perhaps that is telling.”
He added, “I owed it to myself and to all the people who have supported me over the years to pursue justice. I...

Even onlookers seemed to struggle processing the scene unfolding in front of them. It was the first day of West Hollywood’s Pride celebration, and eight Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies were wrestling two LGBTQ activists to the ground.

Once upon a time, concerned parents warned each other about their children falling under the possibly demonic influence of the metal band Kiss — whose name was falsely alleged to stand for “Knights in Satan’s Service.” But this week, conservatives are standing in solidarity with one of the group’s founding guitarists, Paul Stanley, 71, who issued an unprompted statement calling expression of gender identity among children “a sad and dangerous fad.”

San Francisco, Dec 14 (Ians) Anti-lgbtq slurs have increased on Twitter since Elon Musk took over as CEO, despite his claims and actions to the contrary, including disbanding Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council, a new report has shown.
According to Media Matters for America and GLAAD, the retweets of tweets by right-wing figures include the anti-lgbtq “groomer” slur, as tweets containing the slur mention right-wing figures.
The researchers looked at nine popular right-wing accounts which include Tim Pool, Jack Posobiec, Jake Shield, Gays Against Groomers, Blaire White, Allie Beth Stuckey, Andy Ngo, Seth Dillon, and Mike Cernovich to chart their use of the anti-lgbtq slur “groomer”.
Overall, these accounts saw a 1,200 per cent uptick in tweets or retweets that used the slur, an increase of 3,600 instances to 48,000.
Libs of TikTok, another right-wing account, experienced a 600 per cent increase in mentions, ranging from nearly 2,000 to nearly 14,000, while Rep. Mayra Flores (R-tx...

Marcus Mumford talked about the likelihood of Mumford & Sons reuniting soon to work on new material in a clip from an upcoming interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, airing this Sunday, Nov. 27, on NBC.
It’s been four years since the last Mumford & Sons album (2018’s Delta), and back in September, Mumford released his own solo debut, Self-Titled. Nevertheless, the frontman made it sound like the group hasn’t been on any kind of hiatus.

Kathy Griffin Suspended from Twitter After Parodying Elon Musk, Uses Dead Mother’s Account to Return

Elon Musk has only owned Twitter for a little over a week, but the billionaire is already making new enemies on the social media site.
On Sunday, comedian Kathy Griffin was banned from Twitter after she changed her display name and profile picture to match Musk’s, and wrote several satirical tweets mocking the Tesla and Space X CEO. The “impersonation” was paper-thin — her handle remained @kathygriffin and could be seen on all her tweets — but the suspension was accompanied by a tweet from Musk stating that “any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended.”
Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” will be permanently suspended

Winston Marshall, the banjoist and guitarist of Mumford & Sons, has quit the Grammy-winning British band months after provoking a fan and public backlash following his support for a book by right-wing provocateur Andy Ngo.
In a post on Medium, Marshall outlined the reasons he is leaving the band he had been a part of since it was founded in 2007. He expands on his initial apology but also says he could not continue to “self-censor” his views. “I have spent much time reflecting, reading and listening. A founding member of the English folk rock act Mumford & Sons said today in a Medium post that he’s leaving the band in order to avoid tainting them with his personal political opinions.
Winston Marshall created a firestorm on social media in March when he tweeted support for journalist Andy Ngo’s book Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, which examines the radical leftist group’s history and tactics.
The guitarist and banjo player subsequently took a brief break from the band in March. Although he says his group had “invited me to continue with them,” he has now decided to leave so that he could “speak freely without them suffering the consequences.”
Marshall insisted that he was not endorsing the far right by praising Ngo’s book, saying, “Nothing could be further from the truth. I condemn unequivocally all political extremism, be it of the Right or Left.

Update: Winston Marshall is officially leaving Mumford & Sons. The musician announced the news in a message posted to Medium on June 24. The move comes about three months after Marshall received backlash for praising Andy Ngo, the conservative writer who penned Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, in a tweet. "Posting about books had been a theme of my social-media throughout the pandemic," Marshall recalled. "I believed this tweet to be as innocuous as the others. How wrong I turned out to be." Looking back, Marshall remembered receiving "tens of thousands of angry retweets and comments." And while the band consisted of four...

Winston Marshall has announced that he is officially leaving Mumford & Sons following an uproar after he praised a book by right-wing social media personality Andy Ngo.
“This is a difficult decision first brought about by an unintentional Twitter storm. In March I tweeted about the New York Times Best Seller Unmasked,” Marshall said in a statement. “The book documents the recent activities of the extreme Left in the US. The tweet was misconstrued by many as an endorsement of the equally abhorrent Far-Right. Nothing could be further from the truth.

When most of us get diarrhea at a fast food restaurant, we chalk it up to consuming too much sodium too quickly, or age rendering our digestive system more sensitive, and move on. This is not exactly what happened yesterday, when the Police Benevolent Association (Pba) reported that three NYPD officers had been hospitalized after drinking Shake Shack milkshakes that they believed had been tampered with bleach.
The Pba tweeted that the officers in question had been assigned to protest detail in lower Manhattan. “When NYC police officers cannot even...

There’s a folksy saying that grandparents of all stripes like to dispense: If it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, then you shouldn’t be surprised when it starts quacking. Another, perhaps less folksy version of this idiom is Occam’s Razor, the theory that the simplest explanation for an event or phenomenon is usually the most likely.
Nowhere was this demonstrated more quickly than in the case of the meteoric rise and equally rapid fall of Andy Ngo, the provocateur and social media personality who garnered nationwide sympathy last June,...

In the weeks leading up to the August 17th Proud Boys rally in Portland, Oregon, many were unsure what to expect. Local law enforcement officials and many counter-protesters were concerned about the prospect of increased violence at the rally, particularly in light of a high-profile incident last June featuring right-wing journalist and provocateur Andy Ngo. Increasingly violent rhetoric from members of the organization, particularly from organizer Joe Biggs, also fueled fears that the rally would result in violence.

Over the past year, the extremist, far-right group the Proud Boys has undergone what appears to have been a dramatic implosion. Gavin McInnes, the group’s bombastic, ironically mustachioed founder (and the co-founder of Vice magazine), resigned late last year. More recently, the group was one of the targets of social media platforms’ efforts to combat hate speech; mainstream sites like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook banned a number of Proud Boys-related accounts, thus significantly curbing its ability to attract new recruits. The embarrassing leak of a sloppily redacted Proud Boys charter,...
