A fighting game kind of needs to have a storyline for the sake of identity. Not just for the characters, but for the world itself. Who are these characters and why are they fighting? Why are they fighting again? And again?
Usually, these lead to fun B-movie plots that can carry a game or two. Sometimes the sequels just retread the same plot over and over (ie. the Soul Calibur games and King of Fighters), but Mortal Kombat has been able to hold its own for over 30 years due to embracing its own wacky mythology and finding ways to be fresh. Even when they’re literally redoing an earlier story!
There’s a reason why the Mortal Kombat story has been told in different forms. There have been 11 fighting games plus upgrades that are part of its canon and a few side games. As video games have advanced, so has the storytelling.

Writer-director Jamie Sisley’s Stay Awake, a feature-length expansion of the filmmaker’s short of the same name from 2015, looks at its serious subject matter through a maudlin lens. The film’s title refers explicitly to Michelle (Chrissy Metz), whose opioid addiction routinely finds her nodding off in the backseat of the family car on the way to the hospital, as teenage sons Ethan (Wyatt Oleff) and Derek (Fin Argus) sing notable songs to try and keep her conscious. Across repetitive, overwritten scenes that are intent on verbalizing the film’s themes and ideas, Sisley struggles to find a tonal range that might reflect a more complex set of emotions and as such elevated his film above a glorified Afterschool Special.
More metaphorically, the film’s title refers to teenage conscientiousness about extricating oneself from the minimal career expectations of small-town America. When Ethan gets into Brown University and Derek...

Written by Jadzia Axelrod with artwork by Jess Taylor and lettering by Ariana Maher, DC Comics’ Galaxy: the Prettiest Star beautifully brings a cosmically queer romance story to life. The young adult graphic novel follows Taylor, an alien princess known as the Galaxy Crowned/Taelyr, who lives on Earth disguised as a human boy. At first, Taylor seems happy living a normal high school life as a basketball player with a cute corgi named Argus. Although there are hints that Taylor’s decision to hide who she is is taking a toll on her, she pushes those feelings aside. Taylor hides her incredible powers in fear of bringing the dangerous Vane to Earth. But after Taylor meets the Metropolis transplant (and super cute) Kat, she begins questioning the price of living an inauthentic life.
Throughout Galaxy: the Prettiest Star, Axelrod and Taylor illuminate the joys of gender euphoria and the...

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, it's Fin Argus.
For Fin Argus, one of the best parts of filming the recently released "Queer as Folk" reboot was spending time in New Orleans, where the show takes place. "It's the coolest queer scene I've ever been a part of, and people are so expressive there," they tell Popsugar. "It's an environment where weirdness is encouraged. And that, for me, is really exciting because I've always been a bit of an off-kilter person, and so I felt, like, I immediately fit in there, which was a brand new experience for me."
