In recent weeks, tiny crowds have been attending Saudi Arabian Professional League matches.
On Feb. 23, Al Riyadh tied 1-1 with Al-Raed in front of just 292 spectators. The match had taken place at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, and this stadium’s maximum capacity is 22,188.
Al Hazem and Al Khaleej played against each other the next day at the Ar-Rass Stadium (Al Hazem Club Stadium), which has a maximum capacity of 8,000. This match ended with a score of 1-1 and was viewed by a crowd of 695 people.
Al-Fayha beat Abha 3-2 on Feb. 25. The latter team was beaten in the Al Majma’ah Sports City Stadium in front of only 840 people, even though the stadium can hold up to 7,000 attendees.
In the summer of 2023, Cristiano Ronaldo gained recognition as the first prominent European player to join the league when signing with Al Nassr after leaving Manchester United.

The trend of disappointing fan turnouts at Saudi Pro League games shows no sign of improvement.
Despite its renowned players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Roberto Firmino, the league has struggled to attract significant fan support in the Middle Eastern country.
The latest example is Al-Riyadh, whose home match against Damac on December 28, saw a paltry attendance of just 299 spectators.
The Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz Stadium was eerily quiet as the home team secured a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a goal from former Premier League star Andre Gray, who has scored four goals in 11 games since he joined the club in September.
The lack of fan presence at Al-Riyadh matches has been a recurrent theme throughout the season. Earlier this month, a mere 144 fans showed up to watch them play against Al-Khaleej, a game that resulted in a 1-0 loss.

Despite The Saudi Professional League’s significant investment in high-profile players over the summer, the team has reportedly reached a new low point.
Earlier this year, Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines as the first prominent European player to join the league when he signed with Al Nassr after he left Manchester United. Since then, several other notable footballers, such as Karim Benzema, Neymar, Riyad Mahrez, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson and Demarai Gray, have also opted to move to Saudi Arabia and leave the European football behind.
However, despite the influx of star players, the Saudi Pro League was left humiliated after the last match.
A recent game between Al Riyadh and Al Hazm witnessed an embarrassingly low attendance of just 264 spectators. The match took place at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, which has a maximum capacity of 22,188.

“It’s going from a league that no-one considered to one that everyone does,” says Adam Kelly.
The Img Media President is talking about the Saudi Pro League, whose profile has skyrocketed this year following soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr at the end of 2022.
A flurry of transfer activity this summer that has seen some of Europe’s top players making the switch to the Gulf state has turned the league into the sports story of the summer. This has led to a raft of ethical questions directed at players and managers, mainly related to Saudi Arabia’s hardline position on many human rights issues and whether the investment is another example of so-called ‘sports-washing.’ It’s also quietly sparked fears from rival leagues such as the Mls that they might be usurped in the soccer pecking order.

London, April 10 (Ians) The race for the Premier League title got closer as league leaders Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Liverpool.
The draw reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points over Manchester City, who have nine games left to play, while Arsenal have eight, reports Xinhua.
After half an hour, Arsenal looked to be cruising to end a wait of over 10 years for a win at Anfield at halftime when they led through goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool in the 42nd minute.
Salah then missed a penalty, but Roberto Firmino’s 87th-minute penalty saved a point for Liverpool and further opened up the title race.
Erling Haaland returned to fitness with two goals as Manchester City kept up their challenge with a 4-1 win away to bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday evening.

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 8 (Ians) Brazil manager Tite has named 39-year-old defender Dani Alves in his squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the South American country’s football confederation said on Monday.
The 26-man list also includes Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, Real Madrid attackers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and veteran Chelsea center-back Thiago Silva.
But there was no place for Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who was left out after suffering a thigh injury while training last week. Also missing was Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, despite his impressive start to the season for the Premier League club, Xinhua reports.
Tite called up 12 Premier League players, including Manchester United’s Casemiro, Antony and Fred, and Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.
Alves’ inclusion comes despite having played just 12 games for Mexican club Pumas this season and the fact he is just six months shy of his 40th birthday.

London, Oct 10 (Ians) Liverpool fought back twice from a goal down but Arsenal rode on a brace by Bukayo Saka to emerge a 3-2 winner in the Premier League and rose back to the top of the table here on Sunday.
Gabriel Martinelli fired the Gunners ahead in the opening minute, and it set the tone for a pulsating encounter.
However, Liverpool struck back through Darwin Nunez midway through the half, but deep into first-half injury-time Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal’s lead after a rapid counter-attack. The teams went in for the breather with Arsenal leading 2-1 at the Emirates.
Liverpool again got back on level terms through frequent nemesis Roberto Firmino, but Saka netted from the penalty spot after Gabriel Jesus was fouled to ensure a huge three points, and send the Gunners back to the Premier League summit.
There were just 58 seconds on the clock when Arsenal broke through.

Liverpool, Oct 1 (Ians) Former champions Liverpool came back from two goals down to lead but were eventually held 3-3 by Brighton & Hove Albion propped up by Leo Trossard, who scored the club’s first Premier League hat-trick as they held the Reds 3-3 in a six-goal thriller at Anfield here on Saturday.
The Reds came from two down to lead 3-2 on Saturday afternoon as Roberto Firmino’s double was supplemented by an Adam Webster own goal, but Leandro Trossard completed his hat-trick with seven minutes left to secure a point for the visitors.
Trossard scored twice inside the opening 17 minutes to give Roberto De Z’rbi’s side a healthy early advantage, but Firmino made it 2-1 at the break.
Firmino’s second of the game restored parity quickly after half-time and it appeared that the hosts had managed a remarkable turnaround when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner bounced in off Webster.

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 10 (Ians) Brazil manager Tite has named uncapped central defenders Gleison Bremer and Roger Ibanez in his squad for friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia later this month.
Bremer has been in impressive form for Juventus since his July move from Torino while Ibanez has flourished at Roma under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho.
“They’ve been schooled the Italian way under (Juventus manager Massimiliano) Allegri and Mourinho,” Tite told a news conference on Friday, reports Xinhua. “Both coaches are very demanding defensively.”

But there was no place for Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli or Gabriel Magalhaes. Also absent were Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho and veteran Pumas Unam right-back Dani Alves.

Liverpool, Sep 3 (Ians) Mohamed Salah struck the post for Liverpool while Conor Coady had a goal disallowed by Var for Everton as the two clubs played out a goalless draw in the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Darwin Nunez (Liverpool), Luis Diaz (Liverpool) and Tom Davies (Everton) also hit the woodwork in the first half, while Alisson Becker and Jordan Pickford each made crucial saves to preserve their respective clean sheets as the 241st derby ended all square.
Nunez was restored to Liverpool’s line-up ahead of Roberto Firmino as one of three changes made by Jurgen Klopp, with Kostas Tsimikas and Fabio Carvalho also starting in place of Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson respectively.
Amid a frenzied atmosphere, Liverpool settled quickly into an early rhythm of territorial dominance and, following a corner, Tsimikas hit a low drive from the edge of the box that was blocked.

London, Aug 28 (Ians) Jurgen Klopp called it the “perfect football afternoon” after Liverpool recorded their first win of the season with a record-equalling 9-0 Premier League victory against promoted Bournemouth.
Just pipped to the title last term, the Reds struggled in the opening weeks of this campaign as draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace were compounded by Monday’s galling loss at rivals Manchester United, reports Dpa. Klopp’s calls for a reaction were heeded in style on Saturday, when nobody inside a rocking Anfield could have predicted they would witness Liverpool matching their biggest top-flight win ever.
Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk scored in a whirlwind first half against shell-shocked Bournemouth.
Chris Mepham’s own goal set the tone for the second half, with Firmino, Fabio Carvalho and Diaz scoring as Liverpool just failed to take it to double digits.

London, Aug 23 (Ians) Manchester United earned a deserved 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford to kick-start the Erik ten Hag era and leave their rivals winless after three Premier League games.
Ten Hag elected to drop Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire following successive losses to begin the campaign, a decision that was rewarded by a much-improved display, reports Dpa. An incisive move culminated in Sancho calmly slotting past Alisson after 16 minutes as Liverpool conceded first in a club-record seventh consecutive Premier League game.
Marcus Rashford’s goal early in the second half gave United breathing space prior to Mohamed Salah’s header nine minutes from time, which proved a mere consolation.
The hosts’ first-half display was in complete contrast to their 4-0 loss at Brentford, with Anthony Elanga — preferred to Ronaldo — striking the post early on with just Alisson to beat.

London, Aug 19 (Ians) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits Darwin Nunez will have plenty of time to learn from his red card for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen in the 1-1 Premier League draw at Anfield.
The Uruguay international, who arrived in the summer, was dismissed early in the second half for flooring the Eagles centre-back after the two had tangled with each other during the match.
“Provocation and definitely wrong reaction, he will learn from that. I came in and wanted to see the situation — in the game, I could not see anything so I could know what happened: I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away,” Klopp said.
“Then I saw it — yes it is a red card. Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Nunez) made a mistake.”

Manager Jürgen Klopp is good value, but this skin-deep documentary reveals little about what lay behind the club’s rise to Premier League supremacy
Liverpool’s imperious march to the Premier League title in 2020 was interrupted – and almost derailed – by the coronavirus pandemic; the club had to endure a nervy few weeks before the decision was made to finish the season, rather than cancel it. This unexpected wobble is the main point of interest in this otherwise skin-deep, self-congratulatory description of Liverpool’s triumphant season; a super-authorised version where no one is off their guard for a second, and everything is presented in admiringly hagiographic terms.
Admittedly, it would be hard to do it any other way, the trade-off being copious access to Liverpool’s estimable and likable manager Jürgen Klopp, and briefer chats with club captain Jordan Henderson, laser-eyed centre back Virgil van Dijk and smiley Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino among others.
