Turkish producer Onur Güvenatam founded Ogm Pictures in 2019, and has since shepherded a steady stream of hit series and movies such as drama “The Red Room,” the widely-sold “Golden Boy” and “One Way for Tomorrow,” the first Netflix original film out of Turkey.
For Netflix, Ogm has also made Turkish original film “Paper Lives” and the series “The Gift.” Güvenatam is at Mipcom with new shows “Stickman” (Çöp Adam), “Miracle of Love” (Yüz Yıllık Mucize), and “Broken Destiny,” (Toprak ile Fidan) being sold by his recently launched in-house sales company Ogm Universe.
He spoke to Variety about the secret to Ogm’s success, and vented frustrations about the business model imposed by U.S. streamers.
“Golden Boy” was the most-watched television drama last year in Turkey and has been sold to over 100 countries. Why does it connect so well with audiences?
It’s about two young sisters affected by marriage.

The first season of The Tailor, a Turkish Netflix Original that was released earlier this year, was one of the most over-the-top stories that many may have come across. The execution and the screenplay were just all over the place, and viewers had a good reason to wonder if the second season would follow the same path. Season two of The Tailor was released on July 28th on the platform and was created by Onur Güvenatam. They bring to you the story of a fashion designer who is torn between his best friend and the woman he loves.
Season two begins rather erratically, with no mention of the shooting incident that shook the viewers at the end of the last season. The story jumps straight to Esvet and Dimitri’s wedding, and Peyami seems to have recovered from the gunshot wound. But ever since the last season, there has been a constant tension between Dimitri,...

Turkish shows are slowly going the Latin American way of storytelling and are getting good traction in the Netflix space. There are plenty of family-based, over-the-top dramas being made just to catch the eyeballs of the audience, which loves to indulge in the telenovela style of narrative. The Tailor created by Onur Güvenatam, is about a young woman who runs away from her fiancé and finds solace in the most unexpected of places.
The Tailor begins with the audience being introduced to Peyami Doku Maci, the protagonist, who is the most sought-after fashion designer in Turkey. The opening montage has a good time describing the high-voltage drama that goes on behind the stage just seconds before the model walks onto the ramp wearing Peyami’s prestigious collections. This was the extent of the high-flying artistic side of Peyami shown in this series. His profession makes him a tailor, hence the title of the show.

Turkey’s Ogm Pictures has acquired remake rights to produce a local-language adaptation of Shtisel, the hit Israeli television drama carried on Netflix in the U.S.
The Turkish show, Ömer, will track the same basic plot as the Israeli original, which follows Akiva Shtisel (Michael Aloni), a bachelor living in Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood with his aging father, who meets an older widow, Elisheva (Ayelet Zurer), living with her 10-year-old son. But the Turkish version will move the setting to the country’s ultra-Orthodox Muslim community.
“Shtisel is a very unique format that can be adapted to almost every culture and religion,” said Ogm Pictures founder Onur Guvenatam. “So we are very excited to present Ömer in harmony with our culture and traditions.”
Ogm acquired the remake rights from Dori Media Group, which handles international licensing for the show. Ogm plans to produce at least 20 episodes for...
