A conductor doesn't have any power - what you have to have is influence. In fact, I hate rehearsals where musicians don't talk to me or suggest things. I see my responsibility as creating an atmosphere in which the players are fully engaged. Of course as conductor you have to make decisions, you can't have everyone wanting their own way all the time. But I think musicians respect a conductor who knows what he wants from them, and where he wants us all to go.
