Back in 2014, six people took a chance on love and signed up for Married at First Sight. Today, the reality series is a fixture on Lifetime, with more than 50 couples having gone through the show’s unique matchmaking process. The start of October marks the beginning of LGBTQ History Month and the midway point of National Hispanic Heritage Month — two cultures with rich histories and contributions to the arts.
To celebrate, TheWrap recently caught up with five LatinX standouts from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”: Alexis Mateo, April Carrion, Bianca Del Rio, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo and Crystal Methyd. The queens shared their personal herstories and how their Latino heritage inspire their drag.
Check out the interview below and behind-the-scenes of the queens’ LatinX Heritage Month shoot above.
How did Latin culture inspire your drag?
Alexis Mateo: My mom was a fanatic of Miss Universe, and it’s a huge event in my house in Puerto Rico. When she was younger, she used to train people for pageants. I competed in pageants since I was a little boy. And of course, when I became a drag queen, Miss Universe was an inspiration.

RuPaul’s Drag Race kicked off its sixth season with seven contestants battling it out for six available spots in part one of the premiere.
Next week, the premiere will conclude with seven more contestants being put to the test, and finally in week three the surviving 12 will come together for the competition. The two-part premiere is not the only trick RuPaul had up her sleeve. Another big change this season is there will be absolutely no immunity from eliminations.
First things first, RuPaul opened the show with her usual flair and introduced us to the Queens:
Adore Delano, aka Danny Noriega, is perhaps one of the less experienced of the contestants, but she has enough sass to fill any room. Noriega is no stranger to reality tv competition. He was a contestant on Season 7 of American Idol.
Gia Gunn and Vivacious wowed with their extravagant outfits, with Gunn arriving...
