With his latest, deviously disturbing horror film, Scherzo Diabolico, now infecting VOD platforms everywhere, writer/director Adrian Garcia Bogliano is plotting his next move. And it's taking him to Sweden. Christina Lindberg -- yes, that Christina Lindberg, the one who memorably starred in Thriller/They Call Her One-Eye (1973).and inspired Quentin Tarantino to make Kill Bill -- will star in the film, titled Black Circle. The film "follows the story of two sisters whose lives change dramatically after going through hypnosis using a mysterious vinyl album recorded in the 1970's." It's of note that the filmmaker is also a huge aficionado of music from that period, hosting a radio show that, whenever I've listened to it (in Spanish), is enlightening and features a frightfully weird selection of...

The latest horror outing from director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases, Cold Sweat and Penumbra) will soon be haunting the U.S. and the first trailer has been released. Set for release on May 3 via a variety of Video On Demand platforms, Scherzo Diabolico concerns a teenage girl (Daniela Soto Vell) and an accountant (Francisco Barreiro, Here Comes the Devil). Things are not going well for the accountant. He's under extreme pressure at work and at home, and he's driven to do terrible things in an effort to relieve his stress. That leads to him snatching the girl, but things do not go as he plans. The trailer, which debuted via EW, looks extremely dark, but the director provided a little...

Previewing the annual Latin American sales jamboree
Glance at the current profile of foreign-language Oscar contenders and the winners’ roster at major international festivals this year and the march of Latin American cinema in 2015 is clear for all to see.
César Augusto Acevedo’s Land And Shade and Ciro Guerra’s The Embrace Of The Serpent, the newly minted Indie Spirit nominee, earned four awards in Cannes, while Jayro Bustamante’s Guatemala-France drama Ixcanul took honours in Berlin.
Add to that list El Clan, the Argentinian thriller that earned Pablo Trapero a Silver Lion in Venice, and producers, sale agents and festival programmers heading to Buenos Aires for Ventana Sur (November 30-December 4) have reason to be cheerful.

Every day, more and more films are added to the various streaming services out there, ranging from Netflix to YouTube, and are hitting the airwaves via movie-centric networks like TCM. Therefore, sifting through all of these pictures can be a tedious and often times confounding or difficult ordeal. But, that’s why we’re here. Every week, Joshua brings you five films to put at the top of your queue, add to your playlist, or grab off of VOD to make your weekend a little more eventful. Here is this week’s top five, in this week’s Armchair Vacation.
5. The Liberator (Netflix)
While the idea of the historical epic has the ability to turn off a few cinephiles, this is a real gem of a film. From director Alberto Arvelo, The Liberator follows the story of one Simon Bolivar, with beloved Venezuelan thespian Edgar Ramirez in that very role.

I'm not saying that I am having a midlife crisis right now but directors like Nathan Ambrosioni from France are probably going to help that along. We often praise youthful directors here at TwitchFilm. Either for accomplishing so much in a relatively short period of time like Late Phases director Adrian Garcia Boglia, who has 19 directorial credits to his name and is only 34. Or Emily Haggins, who made her first horror feature film, Pathogen, when she was 11. Now we have to add 14-year-old director Ambrosioni to that list. Fourteen. And to top it off Ambrosioni's horror flick, Hostile, will be screened at the film market at Cannes on May 19th. I would have liked to have seen the looks on his teacher's faces when he asked for permission...

It appears that Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s English language debut got a longer title for it’s DVD/Blu-ray Release, now known as Late Phases: Night of the Lone Wolf. An interesting and sometimes successful throwback to a fine tradition of genre cinema, Bogliano owes a great deal of this to Nick Damici, an actor featured prominently in the films of Jim Mickle. Considering the budget, several of the special effects sequences are quite impressive. Premiering at South By Southwest in 2014, a November theatrical release saw a mixed critical reception.
After the surprising critical success of his 2012 title Here Comes the Devil, the Spanish director makes his English language debut with a somewhat droll werewolf exercise paying heavy homage to several notable genre titles from the 1980s. Entertaining but never as funny or thrilling as this concoction sometimes promises, for those familiar with Bogliano’s earlier titles (this marks his eleventh feature,...

On to Werewolf Weekend movie #2, Dark Sky Films release Late Phases. I hadn't received a dud from this company, for review yet, and Phases keeps that going. He has become hardened to life, and in his own way, looks forward to death. His son puts him in a retirement community, thinking it's best for everyone involved, until Ambrose realizes there's something very dark hiding in the community.
I'm going to start with what I didn't like, this time. There were a couple sparse sound design issues. This is something that's hard to pin point where the problem originated at, because so much work goes into it. Suffice it to say that,...

With Late Phases, filmmaker Adrian Garcia Bogliano pens a visual love letter to werewolf films, all while weaving a wonderfully nuanced story of an embittered and blind war veteran (Nick Damici) forced to fight a beastly killer preying on the seniors living in a quiet retirement community.
What it lacks in overt frills, Late Phases makes up for in compelling storytelling and wonderfully layered characters, courtesy of screenwriter Eric Stolze, who does an admirable job of making his werewolf tale a compelling allegory for the aging process and the idea of dying with dignity. Without a doubt, Late Phases is one of the finest lycanthrope films of the last 20 years and a shining example of great independent horror.

The idea of spending the last years of your life alone doesn’t seem appealing to most people. Such is not the case for Ambrose (Nick Damici). He’s a loner who enjoys the company of just his dog, but he’s also a blind veteran of war whose son Will (Ethan Embry) thinks he’s doing the right thing by moving him into a retirement community. Crescent Bay though has a dark secret that visits its residents once a month. Ambrose learns this the hard way on his first night when his service dog and next-door neighbor fall victim to a large and deadly beast. The cops do nothing to take care of the issue so Ambrose decides to take matters into his own hands. So begins a month long journey as Ambrose prepares to face the beast on the next full moon.

A werewolf never has a chance against an old blind Vietnam War veteran.
From Dark Sky Films, director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (“The ABCs of Death”) presents a different kind of werewolf movie that takes place in a retirement community.
Here’s the synopsis:
Crescent Bay is not the ideal place to spend one's golden years, especially since the once-idyllic retirement community has been beset by a series of deadly animal attacks from the ominous forest surrounding it. When grizzled war veteran Ambrose McKinley (Nick Damici) is forced into moving there by his yuppie son Will (Ethan Embry), the residents immediately take offense to Ambrose's abrasive personality. But that take-no-prisoners attitude may be just what Ambrose needs to survive as it becomes clear that the attacks are being caused by creatures that are neither animal nor man, and that the tight-knit community of Crescent Bay is hiding something truly sinister in its midst.

Silver Bullet Band: Bogliano’s English Debut Nontransformative Nostalgia
After the surprising critical success of his 2012 title Here Comes the Devil, Spanish director Adrian Garcia Bogliano makes his English language debut with Late Phases, a somewhat droll werewolf exercise paying heavy homage to several notable genre titles from the 1980s. Entertaining but never as funny or thrilling as this concoction sometimes promises, for those familiar with Bogliano’s earlier titles (this marks his eleventh feature, plus a handful of short films), it’s considerably polished in comparison even if it lacks the pizzazz that such a derivative subgenre requires.
A blind war veteran, Ambrose (Nick Damici) has been relocated to a quaint retirement community, deposited unceremoniously by his son (Ethan Embry). Ambrose chats with his friendly neighbor lady Delores (Karen Lynn Gorney), but she, along with his trusty canine, is ripped to shreds later that very night by a lycanthrope.

Dark Sky Film’s unconventional horror-thriller “Late Phases” is now available on VOD and in select theaters! The film, starring Nick Damici and Ethan Embry, is directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano and features a war veteran who is being forced into a slower lifestyle by his son. But, as fate would have it, that slower pace has to be put on the backburner to save the community. “Crescent Bay is not the ideal place to spend one’s golden years, especially since the once-idyllic retirement community has been beset by a series of deadly animal attacks from the ominous forest surrounding it. In Late Phases, versatile actor Nick Damici (Stake Land, Cold in July) portrays a blind Vietnam vet who has recently moved into a senior living community that’s harboring a deadly secret- werewolves- and he must find a way to put an end to the beastly killings before it’s too late for everyone.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Damici about his experiences collaborating on Late Phases with director Bogliano and his co-stars as well as what initially drew him to the project and the challenges of playing a visually-impaired character. Damici also discussed his next project which has him re-teaming with Jim Mickle for a new television series on the Sundance Channel.

In the new horror movie Late Phases, actor and excellent cook Nick Damici (Cold in July) plays a blind war veteran who discovers that something is badly wrong in the seemingly idyllic retirement community of Crescent Bay—and it isn't excessive bingo fees. Directed by much-tipped terror auteur Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Penumbra), the film costars Ethan Embry, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, the great Tom Noonan, and indie-horror godfather Larry Fessenden, among others. Late Phases stalks its hairy way into select cinemas on Nov. 21. See an exclusive trailer for the film below.

Despite the goofy looking poster, and lackluster trailer, I was looking forward to David Hayter’s wolves. Sure, it looks extremely Twilight’ish, but it was directed by Hayter, and boasted “All Practical Effects”, which is partly true. I tried really hard to enjoy this movie, but there were some things I just couldn’t get past. More about that in a second, for right now, let’s talk about Werewolf Night at Toronto After Dark. Following a screening of The Drownsman tonight, Toronto After Dark 2014 turns hairy, featuring a double feature of werewolf films, both of which I’ve seen already. One of them is Late Phases, directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano, a name you should be familiar with by now, but if not, he’s responsible for films such as Here Comes The Devil, and Cold Sweat. We’ll be talking more about that film later, but for now,...

Joining the growing trend of Chinese companies seeking out a role in the movie business, Internet giant Youku is launching Heyi Film. A wholly owned film production subsidiary, it will make films “to the tastes of the Chinese audience” and “improve film marketing and distribution,” Tech in Asia reported. Heyi is eyeing major theatrical releases and helping online talent branch out. Among the first projects are Bad Sister, starring Ivy Chen; Vacation In Paris, starring Amber Kuo and Louis Koo; and The Master, a co-production with Beijing Century Partner Culture and Media. There’s also a plan to transfer popular web series Yes Boss! and Miss Puff, Tia says. Alibaba is the most recent Chinese company to add film production to its portfolio. However, a red flag was raised over its $804M acquisition of ChinaVision Media Group when the company said it had discovered suspicious accounting and suspended its shares...
