The Gatekeepers, 2012.

Directed by Dror Moreh.

Starring Carmi Gillon, Yaakov Peri, Yuval Diskin, Avi Dichter, Ami Ayalon and Avraham Shalom.

Synopsis:

A documentary featuring interviews with all surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency whose activities and membership are closely held state secrets.

Having little context offered to begin with, The Gatekeepers begins like each and every HBO show - plotting you right into events with little information, with instructions to follow everything attentively. As difficult as this is, it soon eases off as facts and opinions are introduced and explored regularly. Whatever you know or do not know about the history of the Israel/Palestinian conflict, director Dror Moreh unravels the ins and outs of it all to give you an incredibly informed overview of it.

Using the basic documentary format of talking head interviews and footage to form your linear structure, The Gatekeepers is not »

The Gatekeepers DVD Review

Director: Dror Moreh Starring: Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gillon, Yaakov Peri and Avraham Shalom. Running time: 101 minutes Droh Moreh’s The Gatekeepers is a powerful film about the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal intelligence agency. Moreh aims to give some perspective on one of the most controversial political situations in modern times, and interviews the six ex-heads of the agency who analyse their decisions doing one of the hardest jobs in the world. The men are brutally, if not shockingly honest. Their time periods span from the beginning of the sixties, where we can see how the focus of the agency was to attack, and how this mentality gradually changed over time when facing war, kidnappings, bombings and assassinations. They are level-headed, and speak with heavy hearts. They take responsibility for their actions, and acknowledged that not always the right decisions were made. Dror Moreh interview about The Gatekeepers

Dror Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary The Gatekeepers plays at both Seret and Sheffield Doc/Fest this week. The film uses the direct testimony of the six living former heads of Israel's secret service Shin Bet - Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gillon, Yaakov Peri and Avraham Shalom - to explore the men's views on the ongoing conflict between their country and the Palestinians. The men, despite their differences, speak in one voice on that issue at least, arguing that dialogue and a two-state solution are the only constructive way forward.

Catching up with Moreh over the phone this week, we talk about the difficulties of interrogating men who have built their careers on asking questions rather than answering them.

"Of course, I was very, very nervous in the beginning but it was a few interviews with each one. The more you know them »

Film-maker captures Israeli spy chiefs' doubts over covert killing operations

Director rejects charge that Oscar-nominated secret services documentary is one-sided

By the time Dror Moreh had finished filming more than 70 hours of interviews with six former chiefs of Israel's shadowy Shin Bet secret service agency, the director knew he had "dynamite in my hands".

The result, The Gatekeepers, a 97-minute documentary which has just opened in the UK, is indeed explosive. The Oscar-nominated film has played to packed audiences in Israel, many of whom emerged stunned at what they had seen and heard.

"I thought if I could manage to get all [six] to speak openly about their experience in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it will create a shockwave," Moreh told the Observer. "I was right – it created a huge storm."

The recollections and reflections of the former chiefs weave a riveting narrative of Shin Bet's activities throughout Israel's 46-year occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. But the punch comes from their conclusions. »

Oscar Watch: 'The Gatekeepers' Pops the Lid Off the Israeli/Arab Conflict, Dror Moreh Q & A (Video)

31 January 2013 10:57 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Things aren't getting any easier in the Middle East. Filmmaker Dror Moreh decided to look at the Israeli/Palestine conflict from another angle. He went to the six living men who have run Shin Bet, Israel's Secret Service, from 1980 through 2011. Backed by Israel, France, Germany and Belgium, "The Gatekeepers" (February 1) was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics and has been a hit on the festival circuit from Telluride to Sundance. It is a strong Oscar contender for best documentary feature. The movie is a chilling shocker because these powerful men-- Avraham Shalom, Yaakov Peri, Carmi Gillon, Ami Avalon, Avi Dichter and Yuval Diskin-- who we expect to be hardliners, are smart, sane and reasoned about the sources and solutions for Israel's 45-year security problem. They know about it first-hand, because they have had to deal with it every day, unlike the politicians who come and go, for whom they have little respect. »

Opens: February 1, 2013 If there is one element sadly amiss in the Israeli government it is their lack of an effective public relations campaign. Without Madison Avenue-style sound-bites, how can the countries sympathetic to the state such as those in Europe and North America understand why the continued building of settlements is to anyone’s net advantage? Just as Israel is bypassed by the United Nations, which in December 2012 voted observer status to Palestine, just as the small Jewish  [ Read More ]
