Prominent Republicans are speculating that Jared Kushner would be the top choice for secretary of state in Donald Trump’s potential second presidential term.
“According to two sources, prominent Republicans are speculating that Kushner is in the running to take charge at Foggy Bottom if Trump wins in November,” author Gabriel Sherman wrote recently.
“One source briefed on the conversations said Republican senators have privately asked Kushner to head up the agency,” Sherman added. “If Trump were to nominate Kushner to be his secretary of state, it would present risks and opportunities. Kushner’s financial relationships in the Middle East – especially with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which committed $2 billion to his private equity firm” would raise many “ethical issues and surely be probed by Congress during a confirmation hearing.”

On Tuesday, Donald Trump made a vague promise to only personally abuse the powers of the presidency on “day one” of the second administration he hopes to have. For his long-term agenda, Trump is planning to staff major government offices with a crop of the most extreme, vitriolic, and sycophantic Republicans in his orbit — Including known white nationalist and Taylor Swift truther Stephen Miller.
According to a report from Axios, Trump has been mulling which loyalists he will elevate into government if he reclaims the White House. Names floated for various positions include Stephen Miller,...

A since-closed super Pac that supported Donald Trump paid his wife, Melania Trump, $155,000 in 2021, according to a newly reported financial filing by the former president on Thursday, July 13.
The super Pac, Make America Great Again, Again, paid Melania in December 2021 for delivering a speech. This date was around the same time as a fundraiser the super Pac hosted at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Tickets to the dinner were sold for $125,000 each.
The super Pac’s federal documents, which were released last year, do not say that the payment was made to the former first lady. They instead labeled the cost as going toward the “Designer’s Management Agency,” in which Melania Trump is a client.
A representative for Make America Great Again Inc., a new super Pac aligned with Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, said that Melania had been hired for “design consulting” for the older super Pac’s dinner...

In his year and a half in exile, former President Donald Trump has been sketching out his possible return to power, filling his time with authoritarian revenge fantasies and several ideas for government personnel that sound like they sprang directly from a Fox News control room.
Since last year, the twice-impeached former president has — two sources familiar with the matter say — made a habit out of asking golfing buddies and certain confidants about which hardcore Trump sycophants he should appoint to his new Cabinet, White House counsel’s office, the Department of Justice,...

Night 3 of the Republican National Convention delivered the smallest viewership tally to date, dropping 13% from the previous night.
Wednesday night’s proceedings drew around 15.8 million total viewers across all the broadcast and cable news networks, roughly a 2 million viewer dip on Tuesday night. For comparison, the third night of the Democratic National Convention was watched by 22.8 million viewers.
Looking at the networks individually, Fox News dipped around 11% from the night before, but still easily led the way with 7.1 million viewers. That’s pretty much the same audience the network drew for night 1.
All the other networks were closely bunched together, as NBC came second once again with just under 2 million total viewers (down from 2.5 million the night before). ABC came third with 1.9 million, followed by CBS with 1.8 million. CBS was in fact the only network to gain viewers from night 2. CNN’s coverage drew 1.5 million viewers, and MSNBC came last with just under 1.5 million.

The highlight of the third night of the Republican National Convention will be speeches by Vice President Mike Pence and the second lady of the United States, Karen Pence, but there is another major news story looming: Hurricane Laura.
Throughout the day on Wednesday, news networks already were doing a split screen tracker of the hurricane, which is posing a threat to the Gulf Coast as a potential category four storm as it makes landfall. That is projected on the Louisiana and Texas coasts sometime late in the evening or Thursday morning.
Convention planners have not yet said how or if the oncoming hurricane will be addressed during the evening’s events, or if any plans are changing.
This actually is not a new thing for political conventions – which often land in August, at the start of hurricane season. In 2008, Republicans canceled most of the events planned for the first...

Four United States embassies around the world have requested to fly the Lgbtq flag on their flagpoles for Pride Month, and all four requests have been denied by the State Department, NBC News reported, citing three U.S. diplomats.
During the Obama administration, embassies were given blanket permission to fly the pride flag, but the Trump administration has changed the policy to require embassies request permission. This is, of course, in line with the administration’s anti-lgbtq+ policies including on adoption by same-sex couples and transgender rights.

A German producer’s hopes to attend Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, where his film is up for an Oscar, look likely to be dashed by tightened U.S. Department of Homeland Security restrictions and increased bureaucracy.
Hans Robert Eisenhauer is one of the producers of “Of Fathers and Sons,” director Talal Derki’s film about a radical Islamist family in Syria, which is nominated for best documentary feature.
Eisenhauer, managing director of Berlin-based production shingle Ventana Film, produced the film with Ansgar Frerich, Eva Kemme and Tobias N. Siebert of Basis Berlin Filmproduktion. While Derki and the other producers will be in Los Angeles for the Oscars, it looks increasingly likely that Eisenhauer’s past travels will keep him from entering the U.S.

Mika Brzezinski apologized on-air two days after using a homophobic slur while talking about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
“There’s a lot going on, but I want to get to something first,” she segued clunkily after a recap of the morning headlines.
“I was off yesterday for a family matter…but I wanted to address a term that I used on this show on Wednesday that was vulgar. I knew it right away, and I tweeted that it was a terrible choice of words and that I was sorry.”
“But please allow me to say this face to face: The term is crass and offensive and I apologize to everyone, especially the Lgbtq community, and to my colleagues, for using it.”
“It was a mistake. My father would have found it so unbecoming and disrespectful and he would have told me. I will work hard to be better.

President Donald Trump denounced MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski on Thursday after the “Morning Joe” co-host called Secretary of State Mike Pompeo a “butt-boy” on air Wednesday for his defense of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
“If it was a Conservative that said what ‘crazed’ Mika Brzezinski stated on her show yesterday, using a certain horrible term, that person would be banned permanently from television,” Trump said in a tweet. “She will probably be given a pass, despite their terrible ratings.”
Trump also praised Richard Grenell, the openly gay U.S. Ambassador to Germany, after he criticized Brzezinski on his own Twitter feed.

“Outrageous. This is totally unacceptable & deeply disturbing. Sexualizing gay people this way is designed to control them & minimize our worth,” Grenell said, while also adding that he didn’t think much of Brzezinski’s walk-back.

Much like the television networks and their re-runs before the season premieres, President Donald Trump was in a re-tweeting and re-quoting mood this weekend.
The Commander-in-Tweet had four re-tweets and several re-quotes on his Twitter agenda for Saturday. It was his rebuttal to a week that saw former President Barack Obama and an anonymously sourced editorial dominate the headlines.
Using his own pulpit, the President reminded his online following that there is another side to the unfolding story of his administration, as the empire struck back.

Fox News contributor Richard Grenell unloaded on MSNBC’s Katy Tur Friday morning on Twitter, saying she has “no clue” and suggesting that she landed her job because of a past relationship with Keith Olbermann. He tweeted, “Calling yourself a journalist is offensive to real ones. Did u intern for @KeithOlbermann or date him? Either way doesn’t make u a reporter.” It started when Grenell went after Tur over what he feels is biased reporting on the recent WikiLeaks document dumps. Grenell, a former Mitt Romney spokesperson, said, “MSNBC’s Tur has no clue about the Breaking News of the smoking gun email.
