A Translation of What David Said to the Engineer in Prometheus

22 June 2012 12:16 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Prometheus has been in theatres for a few weeks now, and one thing that's been bugging a lot of people is the mysterious monologue that android David speaks to the alien Engineer in the final scenes of the film without subtitles. Well, be bugged no longer!

The Bioscopist tracked down Dr. Anil Biltoo of the Soas Language Centre in London, the real-life linguistics consultant used for the film, to see if he could shed some light on things, and he provided the following info:

The line that David speaks to the Engineer (which is from a longer sequence that didn’t make the final edit) is: "/ida hmanəm aɪ kja namṛtuh zdɛ:taha/…/ghʷɪvah-pjorn-ɪttham sas da:tṛ kredah/"

A serviceable translation into English is: "This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life."

As for that longer sequence which Ridley Scott filmed but ultimately cut, »

Prometheus: David’s Conversation Investigated

22 June 2012 3:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Prometheus undoubtedly brings up a whole new set of questions, and people had the audacity to think it would give them answers…who really wants answers? The bountiful array of ‘what if’ always helps a film expand beyond its big screen environment, it fuels discussions, it demands more viewings to try and spot something you may have missed the first time. The Bioscopist have been doing some sterling work by exploring ‘that’ line that David (Michael Fassbender) says to the Engineer with linguistic expert Dr. Anil Biltoo at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas). Dr Biltoo not only appears in the film, as David’s language professor, but also worked as a consultant on the film.

The main thing we’re all wondering is, why did the Engineer go crazy once he’d been asked? Here is what they’ve discovered:

Warning: This post contains Prometheus spoilers.

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus prompted a lot of questions from cinemagoers, like “What the f—?” and “No, seriously: What the f—?” We can’t provide answers for either of those queries. But we can resolve the question of what Michael Fassbender’s android David said to the Engineer just prior to the alien going ape and trying to kill everyone in sight.

One 'Prometheus' Mystery Revealed

21 June 2012 10:32 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Audiences are still asking questions about "Prometheus," which probably says everything you need to know about Ridley Scott's confounding, fascinating and frustrating return to science fiction. Now, at least one of those queries has an answer: Just what did David say to the Engineer in "Prometheus"?

In the scene, David (Michael Fassbender) awakens an Engineer from stasis at the behest of Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce). He then asks the Engineer a question, which prompts the muscular alien to -- Spoiler -- tear David's head off and go on a killing spree. Oops.

Stu Holmes at The Bioscopist tracked down Dr. Anil Biltoo -- the London-based linguistics expert who taught actor Michael Fassbender the Proto-Indo-European language that David speaks in the film -- who revealed that the happy android said the following during his big moment with the Engineer:

"This man is here because he does not want to die. »

Tired of hearing about “Prometheus?” Well, what else are we cinephiles supposed to talk about? “That’s My Boy”? “Snow White and the Huntsman”? “Rock Of Ages"!?! Anyways, for those still involved in the discussion of all things regarding director Ridley Scott’s divisive summer blockbuster, “Prometheus,” a bit of new information has leaked regarding one of the film’s many ambiguities. Suffice to say, spoilers for “Prometheus” follow:

Movieline has provided some helpful information (via The Bioscopist blog) regarding what exactly it is that everyone’s favorite android David (Michael Fassbender) says to the preserved, pale-skinned Engineer when bringing the elderly Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) to him in the film’s final moments. While to the average moviegoer, David used his impressive intellect to communicate with the engineer in a mysterious vernacular, The Bioscopist writer Stu Holmes was actually able to track down the linguistics expert used as a consultant on the film, »

What Did Fassbender Say to the Engineer in 'Prometheus'? Now We Know

21 June 2012 7:17 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Over the course of Ridley Scott's frustratingly ambiguous space epic "Prometheus" the only thing we really learn about the oddball android David (Michael Fassbender) or his motivations is that the dude liked to touch everything. A lot.

One of the biggest mysteries was *Spoiler* what exactly David uttered in unsubtitled Proto-Indo-European to the giant engineer douche who then goes on a pointless killing spree, but Stu Holmes over at The Bioscopist got the skinny directly from Dr. Anil Biltoo of the Soas Language Centre in London.

The good doctor was not only the language consultant for the film, he also played the digital instructor giving David his afternoon lessons in the gibberish-y precursor to Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, and Latin from way-back in the day around 3700 BC.

Here's what David asked the nice tall grey jelly man:

"/ida hmanəm aɪ kja namṛtuh zdɛ:taha/…/ghʷɪvah-pjorn-ɪttham sas da:tṛ kredah/"

Obviously, spoilers ahead!

Of the unanswered questions still floating around the heads of anyone who saw and obsessed over "Prometheus," the un-subtitled line of dialogue David speaks to the Engineer seems like the one that most likely has a real objective solution.

What did David say that would have pissed off the Engineer so badly that he'd rip the poor, evil android's head clean off?

Well, it appears that we now have an answer. The Bioscopist (via Rope of Silicon) interviewed Dr. Anil Biltoo, the linguistic expert who advised the cast and crew on "Prometheus."

Click after the jump to learn what David said to the Engineer.

According to Biltoo, the secret line of dialogue is a rather simple one. David briefly explains why he and some guy in old man makeup are standing in the Engineer's ship.

We Know What David Told the Engineer in Prometheus

21 June 2012 3:18 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" left audiences scratching their heads as they tried to figure out what they saw on the big screen. One of the many questions in the film was what David told the Engineer. But apparently we can now put that one to rest. Spoilers Ahead: In the movie, David takes Weyland to the only surviving Engineer in hopes that the Engineer can keep Weyland alive forever. But the giant being responds violently after David says something to him. Some believe that David told him to kill Weyland, while others say that David just translated Weyland's words. To get the answer, The Bioscopist reached out to the linguistics consultant Dr. Anil Biltoo, who revealed that there was an actual conversation between David and the Engineer, but the scene was shortened for time purposes. He went on to say that the line that David delivered is translated to: "This »

This Is What David Said To The Engineer In Prometheus

This article contains spoilers for Prometheus.

Remember near the end of Prometheus when David goes to talk to the Engineer and he says something in a different language? Well, if you’re like me, you probably expected to get a translation of that line at some point later on in the film. After all, it’s a pretty pivotal scene. As you know though, Ridley Scott and writer Damon Lindelof decided not to reveal what David said and they left us all hanging, until now that is.

Thanks to The Bioscopist, who did an interview with Dr. Anil Biltoo of the Soas Language Centre in London, who served as the Linguist Teacher on Prometheus, we now know what David said and I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this but it’s exactly what everyone suspected. Are you ready for it? Here it is:

Prometheus: What Did David Say To The Engineer? Find Out Here

20 June 2012 4:25 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

We've known for a while that there will be a lot of deleted scenes on the Prometheus DVD and Blu-ray, but it appears that one of them will include a much longer exchange between David and the Engineer. Many had assumed that he said something offensive (which resulted in the killing spree that followed their exchange) but The Bioscopist caught up with linguistics consultant Dr. Anil Biltoo of the Soas Language Centre in London in order to answer one of the many questions fans have been discussing in great detail since the film was released. "The line that David speaks to the Engineer (which is from a longer sequence that didn’t make the final edit) is as follows: "/ida hmanəm aɪ kja namṛtuh zdɛ:taha/.../ghʷɪvah-pjorn-ɪttham sas da:tṛ kredah/" A serviceable translation into English is: "This man is here because he does not want to die. Revealed: What Did David Say to the Engineer at the End of 'Prometheus'?

20 June 2012 1:21 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Stu Holmes of The Bioscopist interviewed Dr. Anil Biltoo of the Soas Language Centre in London, who served as the Linguist Teacher on Ridley Scott's Prometheus. In his chat learned what David (Michael Fassbender) said to the Engineer at the end of the film as there were no subtitles and it has been something many have wondered given what happens next. Is David uttering nonsense or is there an actual language being spoken here? Stu has the answers for us as he first mentions the scene in which we see David studying Proto-Indo-European (Pie) Linguistics, in which a holographic professor, takes him through the ABC's and recites "Schleicher's Fable." The holographic professor in this scene actually is Dr. Biltoo and he isn't at all against revealing what it is Fassbender's David says at the end of the film (listen to some isolated audio from the scene here): The »
