New Regency to pick up Edgar Wright’s Grasshopper Jungle

16 April 2017 1:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Way back in July 2014 it was reported that Edgar Wright would be adapting Andrew Smith’s Ya novel Grasshopper Jungle, and now with his latest film Baby Driver gearing up for release this summer, it looks like the British filmmaker is ready to move ahead with his next project.

According to THR, New Regency is in final negotiations to pick up the project following a competitive bidding war that included several companies, including Netflix. The film had previously been set up at Sony.

Grasshopper Jungle is “a coming-of-age story that focuses on an Iowa teen trying to come to grips with his own raging hormones and sexual feelings as he and his cohorts cause a deadly genetically engineered plague that unleashes an army of 6-foot-tall praying mantises. Those bugs live the life these guys wish for, acting on an insatiable appetite for fighting, food, and fornicating.”

New Regency in Talks to Board Edgar Wright’s Apocalyptic Movie ‘Grasshopper Jungle’

12 April 2017 3:57 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

New Regency is in talks to come on board Edgar Wright’s apocalyptic movie “Grasshopper Jungle.”

Wright annouced in 2014 that he would direct the film. At that point, the project was set up at Sony with Matt Tolmach and Nira Park producing, who remain as producers but the studio is no longer attached to the project. Netflix was also bidding for the movie rights.

Based on Andrew Smith’s young adult novel, the film will tell the story of a high school boy and his two friends who inadvertently cause a genetically-engineered plague that unleashes giant praying mantises that they must battle. Released in February of 2014, “Grasshopper Jungle,” was set in the fictional town of Ealing, Iowa, in which insects take over the world.

Scott Rosenberg wrote the script.

Wright’s directing credits include “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” and the upcoming “Baby Driver, »

Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey's Baby Driver Looks Like the Ultimate Heist Movie

11 April 2017 2:30 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If you were going to recruit a celebrity team to help you pull off a massive heist, who would you pick? Ansel Elgort wouldn't necessarily be at the top of our list, but Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright could not have chosen better for Baby Driver. The action flick sees Elgort as Baby, a talented getaway driver who has to complete one last job for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey) before he can leave that world behind him with his girlfriend (Lily James). The two trailers are not only full of insane driving and nuggets of wisdom from Jamie Foxx ("The moment you catch feelings, is the moment you catch a bullet"), but also hint at a pretty great soundtrack. See it when it hits theaters on Aug. 11. »

New Trailer for Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’ Kicks into Gear

11 April 2017 6:48 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

We can thank the rapturous response at its South by Southwest premiere, because we’ll be getting Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver sooner than expected. Once set for a mid-August bow, Sony Pictures moved the action comedy up to the more heated arena of late June and now they’ve released a brand new trailer. Starring Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx, this more concise preview actually works better than the past ones, since it’s light on plot, but perfectly sells Wright’s editing style.

“It’s sort of like the old Warner Brothers gangster films in that it’s a cautionary tale. The first chase that you see is the dream, that’s the sort of dream chase. People who have had fantasies of being in a high-speed pursuit, that’s sort of how you hope it would go, »
