Free State of Jones, 2016.
Directed by Gary Ross.
As civil war divides the nation, a poor farmer from Mississippi leads a group of rebels against the Confederate army.
Free State of Jones doesn’t start out so bad; we get to see the horrors of war up close and personal with cannons blasting people away, leaving their brains spilled all over the ground (it is surprisingly some graphic content accurately portraying the aftermath of a battle), our protagonist Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) ia a medic pulling wounded soldiers off of the battlefield to get them help, limbs being amputated in tents, and generally the flick is intense.
Following that, not even 20 minutes into the movie we are hit with our first pivotal character death, and it all just falls flat. Likewise, after all the initial violence and mayhem, »

It’s been interesting watching Matthew McConaughey make project decisions after winning his Academy Award. He has gone big with epics like Interstellar and gone small with the still unreleased Sea of Trees, but this week he’s trying something new. Basically, he’s attempting to bring back the Civil War film with Free State of Jones. This type of movie is rarely done right and usually is super dry, so it’s a tall order, but starring one of our most exciting actors right now, there’s a chance, right? Well, this turns out to be a total bore, plodding and sometimes strangely tone deaf to the racial dynamics on display. The saving grace is McConaughey though, even if you can’t quite see what he saw in this material. There’s moments of entertainment and righteous indignation, but too often it’s just a poorly thought out history lesson. »

Set during the Civil War, The Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. »

Stx Entertainment's Civil War saga "Free State of Jones" picked a tough weekend to open.
Facing off against the "Independence Day" sequel, the still strong "Finding Dory," the appealing looking "The Shallows," and a bunch of high-profile limited releases like "The Neon Demon" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," the Matthew McConaughey-led film has been struggling to get attention.
With just days to go, the company is trying to woo potential customers with Something new - a five-minute-plus clip in which Newt (McConaughey) tries to protect a teenage rebel soldier (Jacob LoFland) during a fierce battle from early in the film. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali also star in the film which opens Friday.

The same day Pierce Brosnan was tapped to replace Sam Neill as star of AMC’s upcoming drama The Son, Jacob Lofland has been set to play the character’s younger version. Based on the book by Philipp Meyer and written by Meyer, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, The Son is a multi-generational epic tale of the story of America's birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas family. "For our children, and their children's children." Fight the power! Stx Entertainment has released the second trailer for Civil War action thriller Free State of Jones, about the story of a Southern farmer who rebelled against the Confederacy. Recent Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey plays Newton Knight; he's joined by a cast featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, Jacob Lofland, Mahershala Ali and Sean Bridgers. The first trailer for this film was pretty solid, and this one is also an engaging and emotional trailer. There's tons of action in this one, which they seem to be playing up in hopes of drawing in some audience. This is an interesting film to compare to The Birth of a Nation, which isn't set during the Civil War but also deals with a resistance movement, though this film seems to have a much bigger budget. Here's the second official trailer for Gary Ross' Free State of Jones, »
