Producers Guild and Writers Guild nominations announced

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees, to go along with yesterday’s nominations by the Art Directors Guild and the Writers Guild of America. Having this troika of guilds is an important moment in the awards season, especially with the flashier Golden Globe ceremony just two days away. With just the Directors Guild of America still to announce, a solid portion of the precursors that matter for the major categories have had their say, nomination wise at least. Academy Award voting is getting underway too, so this information is vital. By next week, many voters will have made their ultimate choices and submitted ballots. This trio of precursors has helped establish some films as potentially sitting pretty with Oscar. The Adg nominations basically just narrowed the field to 15 in Best Production Design, give or take a few. The WGA nominations gave I, Tonya a big boost,

2018 Producers Guild of America Awards Nominations: ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘Get Out,’ and More

2018 Producers Guild of America Awards Nominations: ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘Get Out,’ and More
Nominees for the Producers Guild of America Awards have been revealed, capping off a busy award season week that has already included the Palm Springs Film Festival’s awards gala, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Art Directors and Writers Guild nominations, and the makeup and hairstyling Oscar shortlist — all leading up to Sunday’s Golden Globes.

For the first time, as the result of a tie among the 8,200 PGA voters, not 10 but 11 films will vie for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer, including “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “The Post,” and “Wonder Woman.” Winning this PGA Award typically bodes well for a film’s Best Picture Oscar chances, although last year that was not the case (“La La Land” won at the PGAs, “Moonlight” prevailed at the Academy Awards).

Box Office: ‘All the Money in the World’ Opens With $2.6 Million, ‘Molly’s Game’ Solid
Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World” — the final wide release of 2017 — launched with $2.6 million at 2,068 North American locations on Monday.

Sony is releasing the thriller after Scott revamped the film in six weeks, completely cutting star Kevin Spacey from the movie following sexual harassment and assault allegations waged against the actor. He persuaded Christopher Plummer to replace Spacey as J. Paul Getty in the story of the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, during which time the oil billionaire was reluctant to pay the $17 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers

“All the Money in the World” scored Golden Globe nominations for Scott for best director, Michelle Williams for best actress, and Plummer for best supporting actor. Williams plays Gail Harris, John Paul Getty III’s mother, and Mark Wahlberg portrays Getty’s adviser. The film has been praised by critics, earning a 79% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jessica Chastain’s ‘Molly’s Game’ Moved Back to Christmas Day

Jessica Chastain’s ‘Molly’s Game’ Moved Back to Christmas Day
STXfilms has shifted Jessica Chastain’s “Molly’s Game” back a month to open in limited release on Christmas Day rather than the day before Thanksgiving.

It will get a wide release on Jan. 5.

The film has generated strong reviews for Chastain’s performance as Molly Bloom since it premiered a month ago at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival with a current 93% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s Peter Debruge said in his Toronto review, “‘Molly’s Game’ delivers one of the screen’s great female parts — a dense, dynamic, compulsively entertaining affair, whose central role makes stunning use of Chastain’s stratospheric talent.”

Stx bought the project, which is Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, at the Cannes Film Festival last year for $9 million. Sorkin adapted the script from the 2014 book “Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker.”

Greg Shapiro to head production at Im Global

  • ScreenDaily
The Oscar-winning producer of The Hurt Locker has joined the La-based company as president of feature film production.

Shapiro will oversee all feature production and financing activity at Im Global, which has earmarked an early 2017 start on the Mila Kunis black comedy Jackpot from director Will Gluck.

Im Global handled international sales on awards contenders Hacksaw Ridge from Mel Gibson — on which the company put up more than half the budget as a co-financing partner — as well as Martin Scorsese’s Silence, another film on which it served as co-financing partner.

The company fully financed the Barack and Michelle Obama first date drama Southside With You as well as recent Venice world premiere The Journey.

Shapiro arrives following the departure earlier this year of Matt Jackson, who went to run production and acquisitions at The Mark Gordon Company last March.
