San Bernardino County authorities say a man has been arrested and charged with the murders of a Southern California family of four that disappeared in 2010 and whose remains were found in desert graves last year. Sheriff John McMahon announced Friday that the suspect, Charles Merritt, was a business associate of the McStay family. The sheriff says the investigation reveals that Joseph and Summer McStay and their two young sons were killed in their home in the San Diego County community of Fallbrook, and all were victims of blunt-force-trauma. Merritt is due in court later Friday to face four counts of murder.

The McStay family, missing since February 2010, was found buried alive last November – changing the case from a missing persons to a homicide. Several months later, investigators still aren’t close to finding out what happened to the family of four.
McStay Family Murder Mystery
Joseph and Summer McStay and their children – Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3 – disappeared from their San Diego-area home more than four years ago. They were not reported missing until 11 days after they left their house, leaving behind neither signs of a struggle nor plans to desert their lives in Southern California.
A popular theory over the course of the investigation before the bodies were found was that the McStays had fled to Mexico for unknown reasons. Evidence that supported the theory was their white Isuzu Trooper having been towed from a parking lot near the Mexican border, and surveillance footage that showed a family of four that...

Four skeletons found in shallow graves in the Southern California desert are believed to be those of a San Diego County family that vanished three years ago, police said Friday, resolving one mystery and raising a host of new questions about what happened to the seemingly happy couple and their two young sons. The McStay family - Joseph, 40, his wife, Summer, 43, and their sons Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3 - were apparent homicide victims, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said. Police now will try to piece together what led the McStays to disappear and end up 100 miles from their home,...

Ex-lapd Officer Christopher Dorner pledged to kill a lot of cops in his revenge-fueled killing spree, but once he was surrounded on Tuesday, Dorner apparently turned one of his many weapons on himself - ending one of Southern California's largest-ever manhunts with a self-inflicted gunshot. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told reporters Friday evening that Dorner died from "a single gunshot wound to the head." This supports early media reports that officers in a shootout last week with Dorner (which left one deputy dead) said they stopped being fired upon after hearing a single gunshot from inside the house where Dorner sought refuge.

Police are currently hunting for the suspected cop killer with a door-to-door search in Big Bear Lake, California, before he strikes again.
Christopher Dorner, the former Los Angeles police officer who is suspected of shooting three people dead, including an on-duty officer, sent Anderson Cooper a package on Feb. 1, which included a bullet-riddle coin and a plan to assassinate more police.
Christopher allegedly sent Anderson a coin, given to him by the previous Lapd police chief, who was allegedly responsible for firing him from the department in 2008, a DVD and notes, admitting his belief that he was fired by a “corrupt” police department. He also posted a 6,000 word message on Facebook, promising to seek revenge against the people he believes were responsible for removing him from the department.
