- Dream Theater is a Grammy award winning progressive metal band from New York City. The band was formed in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist John Myung while they attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Current band members are guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, singer James LaBrie, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Portnoy. Past members include Mike Mangini, Derek Sherinian, Kevin Moore and Charlie Dominici. Dream Theater made their debut in 1989 with "When Dream and Day Unite" and has so far released 15 studio albums, including two concept albums - "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory" (1999) and "The Astonishing" (2016). - The band was originally formed under the name Majesty. However, at that time there already was another band called Majesty, so they had to change it. After testing a few unsuccessful names, Mike Portnoy's father suggested "Dream Theater", which was the name of an old movie theater in Monterey, California. The band liked it, and they have been Dream Theater ever since.
- The band's three original members (Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung) are all married to former members of the all-female thrash metal band Meanstreak: guitarist Marlene Apuzzo, guitarist Rena Sands and bassist Lisa Martens Pace, respectively.
- On October 25, 2023, the band announced the return of drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy.
