Grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota and attended Century High School, where she was homecoming queen and valedictorian of the class of 1991.
Graduated, with a B.A., from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1995. Earned a M.A. from the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 2006 and a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Later entered the Ph.D. program at the Department of War Studies at King's College London.
In high school, she was valedictorian, student council president, and homecoming queen, and she excelled in track, basketball and orchestra. She was voted "Most likely to be remembered".
Served five years as an active-duty intelligence officer in Europe and South Korea, and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Her hobbies are running, skiing, cycling, triathlon, surfing, kayaking, weight lifting and kickboxing.
Her brother lives in Washington, D.C.
Her affair with Gen. David Petraeus led to his resignation as director of the CIA in April 2012.
