- In 2002, he was co-laureate of the Nobel prize in physics for his work in astrophysics, which led to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources. His co-laureates were Raymond Davis Jr. and Masatoshi Koshiba for their work with cosmic neutrinos.
- He was considered the "father of X-ray astronomy". He and his colleagues developed telescopes capable of gathering the faintest X-ray signals from the far reaches of the universe.
