Exclusive: Beach House Pictures is riding the crest of an Asian true crime wave. Having created three premium doc projects for Netflix, the Singapore-based producer has now optioned the story of the disappeared Instagram adventurer Justin Alexander.
A premium doc, Lost, is in development after Blue Ant Media-owned Beach House took the rights to Harley Rustad’s book ‘Lost in the Valley of Death: A Story of Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas.’ It has access to all the key players in the story and is headed to Mipcom next week to find potential partners.

Netflix announced “The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea” will premiere Oct. 22.
The three-part docuseries follows Yoo Young-chul, a notorious serial killer who came to light as a psychopath to the Korean public in 2004. From 2003-2004, Young-chul killed a total of 20 people in various parts of Seoul, targeting wealthy elderly people and sex workers.
“The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea” will examine the events through never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with the people directly involved in the case, including the victims’ family members; the officer in charge of the case; other detectives and investigators; prosecutors; lawyers; and profilers Kwon Il-yong, Korea’s first profiler who interacted directly with Young-chul, Lee Soo-jung and Bae Sang-hoon.
The series is directed by John Choi and Beach House Pictures head of factual, Rob Sixsmith — who worked with a diverse Korean and Singaporean team for the project.

Factual streamer CuriosityStream has begun production on an ambitious six-part documentary series exploring biomimicry, the study of solving human design challenges by looking to the natural world.
Hosted by biologist and filmmaker Patrick Aryee (pictured), original series “Evolve” is produced by Blue Ant Media-backed production outfit Beach House Pictures, and will span four continents. It will explore the ways in which humanity can solve problems by “mimicking” the innovations found in nature.
The show fits into a growing slate of originals from John Hendricks’ CuriosityStream, which reaches around 16 million subscribers worldwide and has distribution tie-ups with the likes of Roku, Apple TV Channels and Apple TV, Xbox One and Amazon Fire TV, among others.

Singapore-based TV production firm, Beach House Pictures is expanding its international and China-facing production capacity. It has hired four executives to join its senior management.
Suzy Hounslow, who joins in a newly-created position as executive in charge of production, will be supervising and providing quality control across Beach House’s international output. She joins after a 10-year stint at Australia’s Seven Network Studios where she oversaw 500 hours of factual, reality and scripted shows annually, with shows including “My Kitchen Rules.” Hounslow will report to founders Jocelyn Little, MD, and Donovan Chan, creative director.
Rob Sixsmith, who joins as head of factual, has previously worked across multiple factual genres, ranging from survival to science, and won a BAFTA Award in the process.
