Partition: 1947 gets thumbs-up from audience at Delhi special screening

12 August 2017 8:13 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

On Friday, there was a special screening of Partition: 1947 that was held in Delhi. While director Gurinder Chadha flew all the way from the UK, lead actress Huma Qureshi too came to the capital for the special occasion. Though the film has already made an impression overseas where it has already been released earlier this year, it was a nervous moment for both Gurinder and Huma since in India it is arriving only now. Hence, this special screening that was conducted exactly a week before release held a lot of importance for all involved with the film.

If reports from the screening are any indication, team Partition: 1947 can pretty much relax since the response turned out to be overwhelming.

“This was for the first time when even Gurinder watched the film in Hindi. Partition: 1947 is originally in English and known as Viceroy’s House. This is how it has been released internationally. »

Huma Qureshi gets international acclaim for Gurinder Chaddha’s Partition: 1947

8 August 2017 12:08 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Come 18th August and Partition: 1947 would be hitting the screens. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, the film has already seen international exposure coming its way, what with theatrical and festival screening across U.K., Germany, France, South Africa, Australia, and the States to name a few. Released in English there as Viceroy’s House, the film is now arriving in India right on time as the country celebrates its 70th year of Independence on 15th August.

While the film boasts of an eclectic mix of cast from India, United Kingdom and United States of America, it is also special since Huma Qureshi has an integral part to the play in the narrative. As a Muslim girl who is in love with a Hindu boy and finds herself in a predicament at the time of partition, Huma has already seen quite some appreciation coming her way from the international press.

First Official Trailer for Drama 'Viceroy's House' with Gillian Anderson

2 August 2017 6:31 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"You think India is ready to rule itself?" IFC FIlms has debuted an official trailer for the drama Viceroy's House, telling the story of Lord Mountbatten's trip to New Delhi in 1947 to help transition India from British rule to independence. This is a story that has been told before in many other films previously, but we have another new take on it this year. Viceroy's House features Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Huma Qureshi, Michael Gambon, Lily Travers, Simon Callow, Manish Dayal, and Om Puri. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Belgrade Film Festival. It's goal is to focus on the division of India, and the creation of Pakistan, more than anything and how this destroyed the lives of so many different people. It's a good film, just not very memorable, but that's my take. Here's the first official trailer »

Based on the true story of the final months of British rule in India, Gurinder Chadha’s Viceroy’S House will release in the UK on Digital Download 24 July 2017 and on Blu-ray™ and DVD on 7 August 2017. To celebrate, we’re giving away 2 Blu-ray copies!

The release coincides with the 70th Anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan. After 300 years of British rulers, the last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, was charged with handing India back to its people. It is a story that is deeply personal to Gurinder, whose own family was caught up in the tragic events that unfolded as the Raj came to an end.

The film’s story unfolds within the great House. Upstairs lived Mountbatten, his wife, Lady Mountbatten and daughter; downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim, Sikh servants. As the political elite – Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi – converged on the House to wrangle »
