The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

Already legends in the remote town of Matsapha, Swaziland, country singers Gazi “Dusty” and Linda “Stones” find a warm welcome in the American south when invited to the Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards. I suppose all small towns are alike in some ways, and their showstopper “The River” receives a warm reception even if, heartbreakingly, they don’t get the enormous crowd they dreamed of when heading to the US. The annual festival takes place over a long weekend and has musical acts from 15 nations competing in various categories.

Moving Bangladesh wins $20,000 Sloan Fast Track Grant.
Projects from the UK, Bangladesh, Greece and Trinidad & Tobago were among 15 selected for Film Independent’s 19th Fast Track Film Finance Market that took place online from November 15-18, the organisation said on Friday.
The four-day programme connected participating filmmakers with financiers, production companies, agents, managers and other film industry professionals from, among others, A24, Decal, Maven Screen Media, Searchlight Pictures, Venice Film Festival, and Hollywood agencies.

Xtr, the documentary studio set up by Ryot co-founder Bryn Mooser, Knock Down The House producer Wavelength Productions and new partner Park Pictures, the company behind The Truffle Hunters, partnered on the Keep The Lights On Fund to help struggling documentary filmmakers finish projects hit by the shutdown.
The collaboration offered filmmakers between $5,000 and $10,000 to help support post-production budgets or filmmakers’ personal expenses during the shutdown.
Some 12 of the 15 winners are helmed by female directors.

Gus (Jesse Rudoy) is a somewhat functioning alcoholic who is planning to open a one-screen movie theater in a quaint East Coast island town. Karen (Lindsay Burdge) has been hired to help Gus get the theater ready for its first screening, which is a mere two weeks away. She immediately discovers that one of her "other duties as assigned" is to hopelessly try to wrangle Gus into showing up at the theater on time for work. Day after day, Gus finds different ways to stall, seemingly frightened to take the first step towards opening the theater. It seems as though Gus is even reluctant -- or ill-prepared -- to provide Karen with a list of what work still needs to be done.
