Funny or Die Enlisted the Stars of It Follows For a Spot-On Parody

4 May 2015 11:05 AM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

This year's cult horror hit It Follows is absolutely terrifying, but its Funny or Die parody? Less so. The site enlisted the film's stars, Maika Monroe, Daniel Zovatto, and Keir Gilchrist, for a sequel of sorts, titled "Just Calling to Say It Follows." It pokes fun at the theory that the movie is a metaphor for sexually transmitted diseases, as the characters call their recent sexual partners to tell them a shapeshifting demon might be after them. It's a little slow, but the punchline at the very end makes it worth a watch. Take a look! Just Calling To Say 'It Follows' with Maika Monroe from Funny Or Die »

I'm a bit surprised that the spring horror's hit "It Follows" hasn't spawned any major spoofs just yet. But perhaps hoping to beat the inevitable, members of the cast have teamed with Funny Or Die for "Just Calling To Say It Follows." Movie Review – It Follows (2014)

It Follows, 2014

Written and Directed by David Robert Mitchell

Starring Maika MonroeLili Sepe, Keir Gilchrist, Bailey Spry, Jake Weary, Daniel Zovatto

Synopsis:

For 19-year-old Jay, fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her.

A young adult female is terrified and under harrowing pressure that someone or something is following her. She gets in her car and drives off into the distance to a beach and lies on the sand, while beautifully choreographed in the background are the headlights of her car lighting up the night. Could this be some sort of demonic car? Maybe. It’s a highly unsettling sight, but by morning we witness a scene far more graphic; the woman is dead with her leg mutilated.

It Follows – The Review

26 March 2015 1:00 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

There is finite number of themes from which to draw, so half the battle of making a compelling film is finding a new angle to tell a story already told countless times. David Robert Mitchell succeeds at this as writer and director of It Follows, a new horror film that’s receiving a level of artistic appreciation and acclaim rarely experienced by films true to this genre.

Set in suburban Detroit, the story follows Jay, a teenage girl who unwittingly becomes the target of an invisible evil force when she falls for a teenage boy who is not who he seems. Once the truth of the terror she has inherited sets in, she realizes she will never again be able to relax and enjoy her life, unless she can find a way to destroy the force compelled to follow her anywhere she goes. Accompanied by a handful of close friends, »

‘It Follows’ to Expand to 1,200 Locations

24 March 2015 2:53 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Radius is following through on its promised expansion of “It Follows,” taking the horror pic into 1,200 U.S. theaters this weekend.

It Follows” launched on Friday the 13th in four theaters and grossed an impressive $160,089 in its first weekend — the best opening in limited release for a horror film since 2010’s “Paranormal Activity” — causing Radius to pull the plug on plans for a March 27 DVD/VOD release.

It then expanded to 32 locations for its second weekend, grossing $344,874 and finishing 19th on the box office chart. The film, directed by David Robert Mitchell from his own script, has a 94% “fresh” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site.

Maika Monroe stars as a 19-year-old who, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions — leaving her unable to shake the sensation that someone or something is following her. Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto and Jake Weary also star.

Film Review: Tense Creepy Factor Along the Way for ‘It Follows’

22 March 2015 8:48 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There is a particular atmosphere in “It Follows,” that stalks a viewer long after the credits recede. That is a fine legacy for a horror film, which contains symbolic elements of life itself, and some graveyard humor that breaks the agitation. Yet it also relies on the same old, same old.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

The fascination with the walking “undead” or dream monsters or whatever the followers are in this film is approaching it’s expiration date (hyyy-ooh), but writer/director David Robert Mitchell does breathe some creativity into the state of things within the story, and it formulates a stark creepiness. His use of these followers also symbolizes the simple notion that death is stalking us all, and what sets off this path has much to do with our own biology and consciousness. Yes, you can get a lot out of “It Follows,” even if you just like naked zombies. »

‘It Follows’ Expanding in Theaters After Big Weekend, VOD Release Delayed

19 March 2015 7:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After a very promising first weekend in theaters, Radius-twc has opted to delay the planned March 27 video-on-demand release of horror pic “It Follows” in favor of a wide theatrical expansion over the next two weekends.

“The movie is performing big, so we are going to chase it,” said David Glasser, chief operating officer of the Weinstein Co.

It Follows” opened last weekend with a surprising $160,089 at four theaters — two in Los Angeles and two in New York. It will move into about 40 theaters on Friday and more than 1,000 theaters on the following Friday, Glasser said.

Glasser did not disclose the date of the VOD release. But the list of theaters showing “It Follows” includes a pair of AMC multiplexes, which indicates that the date won’t come within the next few weeks.

Major chains such as AMC continue to strongly oppose VOD releases while a film is playing theatrically.

Stars: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Linda Boston, Ruby Harris, Bailey Spry, Debbie Williams | Written and Directed by David Robert Mitchell

Over the last few months we have been spoilt for choice when it comes to interesting indie genre fare. The Guest, Predestination, The Babadook and Coherence all seem to have chimed with the very particular audiences they attract and David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows seems to be treading the same path. Debuting at Sundance last year, the film has built up a head of steam since and along with the aforementioned Babadook, it has been rather difficult to escape it on film related social media for the last little while. On the basis of the film itself, this is hard to understand.

The 11 Indie Films You Must See This March

#1. It Follows (March 13)(Film Page) Director: David Robert Mitchell Cast: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe Criticwire Average: A- Why is it a "Must See"? Director David Robert Mitchell follows up "The Myth of the American Sleepover" with an expressionistic teen horror movie that's like nothing else. While "Myth of the American Sleepover" took the whiny young archetypes of a John Hughes movie in an expressionistic direction, "It Follows" turns to eighties teen slashers of the "Halloween" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" variety while elevating them to a more abstract plane, rendering the looming threat of adulthood in ominous terms. #2. Watch a New Clip from It Follows

"It could look like someone you know, or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you. It can look like anyone... but there's only one of it." The sunny summer turns sinister for 19-year-old Jay when a creeping, transformative force enters her life in It Follows, the second film from The Myth of the American Sleepover writer/director David Robert Mitchell—one that, like his debut, takes place in Detroit. Ahead of the horror film's theatrical release on March (Friday the) 13th, a new clip has been released that teases the eerie end to Jay's date.

Whenever someone thinks the horror genre has just become brown-stained remakes and derivative straight-to-video nonsense, a movie like It Follows comes out and shakes the foundations. A brilliantly written movie, superbly acted and masterfully directed, It Follows is tremendous in every sense of the word.

Like a urban legend you never knew, It Follows tells the story of young and naive girl Jay (Maika Monroe) who innocently sleeps with a boy from her school, only to discover that he’s passed something to her. This ‘it’ is now following her, »

Thn Interview: ‘It Follows’ Director David Robert Mitchell

26 February 2015 5:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

We at Thn love a good horror film and are beyond excited that It Follows is released this week. The film is a master-stroke for the – lets face it – rather stagnant genre and actually manages to be chilling and creepy. The story tells of Detroit dwelling teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) who, after sleeping with her new boyfriend, finds herself stalked by a relentless being. The story is the brainchild of writer/director David Robert Mitchell. Shockingly It Follows is only his second feature.

Ahead of the release we caught up with cast member Daniel Zovatto (his interview is here in case you missed it) and director David Robert Mitchell. We thoroughly enjoyed our chat with Mitchell as we reminisced about the films of our youth, the logistics of the surprise scare, and how to write a good script.

Flickering Myth sits down with Daniel Zovatto

It may have been cold and miserable out in Central London, but there is a bright smile on the face of Daniel Zovatto. A very handsome, young actor from Costa Rica, Daniel Zovatto features in It Follows, a new terrifying horror movie from David Robert Mitchell where he plays the concerned neighbour Greg. He pushes his hair back as he greets me when I walk into a meeting room of the fancy Soho Hotel and compliments me on my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt. He looks like he has had a long day of interviews, but the sight of this t-shirt brought him to life.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Yes! I fucking grew up on that shit man,” he tells me excitedly as we shake hands.

Thn Interview: ‘It Follows’ Actor Daniel Zovatto

This week sees the release of indie horror It Follows. You will have no doubt seen the posters or trailer plastered everywhere, but you might not know too much about the film. It Follows is the second feature film from director David Robert Mitchell and sees teenage girl Jay, played by Maika Monroe, the star of last year’s brilliant The Guest, and her friends stalked by a malevolent spirit. So far it sounds like every horror film out there but the twist with It Follows is that you only become a target if you sleep with someone already in its sights; it’s a cross between the video in Ringu and an Std.

Last week we had the opportunity to sit down with both director David Robert Mitchell and one of the young cast, actor Daniel Zovatto. Zovatto is originally from Costa Rica (yes folks the land of Jurassic Park »

It Follows Review

15 February 2015 7:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: David Robert Mitchell

Cast: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe, Jake Weary, Daniel Zovatto

Running time: 100 minutes

Certification: 15

Synopsis: Love is a dangerous game, but this is ridiculous! After “relations” with an seemingly nice guy, Jay (Monroe) finds herself stalked by a malevolent force and must find a way to shake off this deadly curse.

Horror and originality are distant bedfellows, for years the genre has been the refuge of the flat-pack film-maker; assembling the pre-fab facets of films that are as rickety as heck but, more or less, perform their basic function. It Follows is a welcome break from the mediocrity; a spooky sleeper-hit already impressing critics, garnering a slew of award wins and nominations thanks to it’s indie sensibilities and new threat to fear.

It Follows is essentially the story a sexually transmitted entity; you do the deed, you contract the curse and now It’s after you. »
