It’s about halfway through the fifth season of “Orange Is the New Black” when Elizabeth Rodriguez’s recently un-incarcerated, always opinionated Aleida sums up the plight of female-forward broadcast television writers everywhere with one simple, well-crafted exchange.
“Can I say ‘bitches?’” she asks a local newscaster and then, when she gets the green light, immediately and involuntarily exclaims, “s—.” The journalist, played by Thea McCartan, responds she can’t say that, to which Aleida replies, “What kind of f—ing bulls— rule is that?”
Although the writers may have simply been trying to show that Aleida was not as media savvy as she was street smart in this episode, which was written by co-exec producer Lauren Morelli, “in a lot of ways, we’re all like Aleida,” says writer-producer Carolina Paiz.
After years of working on broadcast TV, Paiz understands Aleida’s frustrations. On network shows, she notes, “We’re constantly censoring or told to self-censor »

Since ABC has already renewed its Modern Family TV show for its ninth and tenth seasons, we don't have to worry about it being cancelled anytime too soon. That said, the end is more or less nigh for the top rated Alphabet Network sitcom. Although he allows Modern Family could continue beyond season 10, Steve Levitan says he and co-creator Christopher Lloyd are thinking of wrapping up the story with its tenth installment. The ABC comedy stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sofía Vergara, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, Jeremy Maguire, and Brigitte the French bulldog. Manny, Luke, Haley and Alex will all be back with the family.
The core “Modern Family” kids have closed their deals to sign onto two more seasons of the ABC sitcom, Variety has learned. Insiders say “significant” pay raises were given to each of the young adult actors — Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter.
Kids actors Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays Lily, and Jeremy Maguire, who plays Joe, joined the series later on in its run and have more time left on their current deals, unlike the other four TV kids, who are now all adults and at least the age of 18 in real life.
ABC and 20th Century Fox Television declined to comment on the actor deals.
The close of the younger actors’ contracts marks the end of rather lengthy negotiations for the regular “Modern Family” cast, who are now all officially set for Seasons 9 and 10. In early May, ABC »

ABC will be giving you more Family time for some time.
The network has renewed Modern Family for a ninth and tenth season, EW has learned. Similar to seasons 7 and 8, seasons 9 and 10 will each consist of 22 episodes. The renewal will hurtle the show past the 200-episode milestone midway into next season, as 188 episodes will have aired after the season 8 finale next Wednesday. It also wraps up a negotiating process that was lengthy but not nearly as contentious as the one in 2012, when adult cast members boycotted a table read and »

After a little behind-the-scenes drama, “Modern Family” has been renewed for two more seasons by ABC.
The long-running 20th Century Fox Television comedy’s season-eight finale is scheduled to air May 17. The renewal signals a conclusion to lengthy negotiations with the show’s adult cast members, whose contracts expire at the end of the current season.
Sources tell Variety that most of the show’s core cast members — Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell — will see their paychecks rise to nearly $500,000 per episode for the next two seasons, up from about $350,000 under their previous contracts. Ed O’Neill has in the past commanded a higher fee as he has since the series premiere. O’Neill also has a bigger profit participation stake than his co-stars given his higher profile at the time the series bowed in 2009.
The other five actors earned small profit-participation stakes in the show during the previous contract »

Ariel Winter is making a statement!
The Modern Family star attended an ABC screening event with her castmates on Wednesday in North Hollywood, California, and there's no doubt that the 19-year-old actress was the center of attention, thanks to her risqué look.
Winter went full-on glam for the occasion, showing off her voluptuous curves in a cleavage-baring gold mini dress, which she paired with matching metallic heels.
Revealing, yes, but perfect for a fancy A-list soiree! But here's the twist -- the event was very casual. So laid-back, in fact, that many of her co-stars showed up in jeans.
Nolan Gould, Steven Levitan, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell were all there, sporting cool, but informal, ensembles, a major contrast to Winter's flashy number.
Of course, this is not »
