The X Factor has been thrown into further chaos after tonight's show was delayed by technical difficulties. Viewers were kept waiting for 15 minutes as they tuned in to see the final six perform a 'Lady GaGa vs Queen' tribute and discover who out of Amelia Lily, James Michael, Jonjo Kerr and 2 Shoes would be returning. Instead, ITV screened a montage of some of the series's more notable auditions, including the debut performances of finalists Janet Devlin, Sami Brookes and Johnny Robinson, controversially-axed contestant Jade Richards and Goldie Cheung, who quit after being granted a spot in the final 16 by Louis Walsh. This year's looks are distinctly off key, from Kitty Brucknell's gym knickers to Misha B's rhino hair and Frankie Cocozza's super-tight trousers
In pictures: X Factor fashion crimes
It is the traditional retort of any fortysomething confronted by a pop show: "Whatever does he think he looks like?". Female version: "She'll catch her death!" – see any Rihanna video for details. But this year's The X Factor styling has baffled not only the mums and dads of Britain, but every viewer with the slightest modicum of fashion awareness.
Last year, stylist Grace Woodward admittedly showed a certain disregard for what you might call "matchiness", stuffing Katie Waissel into a series of outfits that made her look like the troubled offspring of Jack Frost and Robocop. But at least it was interesting. When it came to Mary Byrne, it was all about sequins and skimming over problem areas. There »

The X Factor's Misha Bryan and Tulisa Contostavlos reportedly fell out over the judge's lover Fazer. Contostavlos and Louis Walsh both accused Bryan of being a bully on Saturday's Rock Week show and there were tabloid reports of her having backstage spats with Sami Brookes and Rhythmix. However, according to The Mirror, the real source of tension between the N-Dubz star and Bryan was text messages sent to Contostavlos's bandmate and lover Fazer. The rapper allegedly gave Bryan his contact details backstage because he is a fan and the 19-year-old was then accused of "bragging" about it backstage on the ITV1 show. "Word quickly got back to Tulisa who was (more) »

ITV1 talent show continues to falter, losing to dance rival on Saturday and shedding figures for its Sunday results show
The hunt for The X Factor's missing millions goes on, after the ITV1 show once again lost out in its brief head-to-head with BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday.
The main Saturday night edition of The X Factor pulled in 9.8 million viewers, a 38% share, between 8pm and 9.55pm, more than 2 million viewers down on the 12.01 million who tuned in at the same stage of the series last year.
In the 15 minutes when it went head-to-head with Strictly Come Dancing, between 8pm and 8.15pm, the Simon Cowell show averaged 8.3 million against Bruce Forsyth's 9.5 million.
But The X Factor, watched by 10.1 million viewers when ITV1 +1 is included, still had the edge overall, eclipsing Strictly Come Dancing's average of 9.4 million (38.7%) between 6.25pm and 8.15pm.
Strictly Come Dancing was also down on last year, »

Kitty Brucknell has insisted that she has been "real" during her spell on The X Factor. The singer was saved by over-25s mentor Louis Walsh on last night's results show when he decided to send home Sami Brookes from his two acts in the bottom two. Responding to comments on Twitter after the show, Brucknell said: "I cried because I didnt want louis to have to choose between us, I seriously Iove Sami she is a true friend. (sic) "How would you feel if you had to fight your best friend for something. Was horrible." Of claims that she faked her tears, she continued: "Why do you think I'm pretending? I don't understand what the hell people mean when they say that. "Why do you think I was 'crying for sympathy?'. Sami was my best friend how the hell am I supposed to react? I can't win with you! »

Sami Brookes has been voted off 'The X Factor'. The 31-year-old hopeful found herself in the bottom two against Kitty Brucknell in last night's (23.10.11) results show, with three of the judges - including Louis Walsh, who mentored both women - opting to send her home and only Tulisa wanting to save her following her rendition of Aretha Franklin's hit 'A Natural Woman'. Refusing to send the vote to deadlock when it stood 2-1 in Kitty's favour, Louis said: "I love both girls, but Kitty, you're not connecting with the public for some reason. X Factor judge Gary Barlow has admitted that he expected Frankie Cocozza to be in the bottom two after tonight's public vote. Cocozza, who was in the sing-off with Nu Vibe last week, was saved by viewers after his performance of Primal Scream's 'Rocks' yesterday. However, Barlow said on The Xtra Factor that tonight's bottom two - Kitty Brucknell and eliminee Sami Brookes - was a "big shock" for him. "Me and Frankie were backstage honestly holding each other," he admitted. "I was convinced Frankie would be in the bottom. "Because of last week, it was such a big shock. X Factor eliminee Sami Brookes has blamed her song choice for her exit. Brookes, who was sent home by the judges in tonight's show, performed Cher's 'If I Could Turn Back Time' on last night's programme despite admitting that she was uncomfortable with the track. Speaking on The Xtra Factor this evening, Brookes admitted that she thinks the songs chosen by her mentor Louis Walsh were unsuitable. "I expected [my elimination] from last night's performance," she said. "I've got a lot more to give. I was given the wrong songs - I begged him, I cried. I didn't want to sing Cher." Reminding viewers that she sang a Bruno Mars track at Boot Camp, she continued: "I'm current. I'm 30 years old, I'm not 70, so I was never given the right song choices. That I'm (more) »

X Factor eliminee Sami Brookes has revealed that she is staying "positive". The 31-year-old was sent home by the judges in tonight's show after finding herself in the bottom two with Kitty Brucknell. Sami Brookes has become the sixth act to leave this year's series of The X Factor. The 31-year-old was eliminated from the competition after viewers voted her into the bottom two along with Kitty Brucknell. Both acts are mentored by veteran judge Louis Walsh. In the sing-off, Brookes performed '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' by Aretha Franklin, as Brucknell reprised her original audition song, Lady GaGa's 'The Edge Of Glory'. Host Dermot O'Leary then threw voting over to the panel, asking Gary Barlow to make the first decision. "This is tough," he declared. "Sami, that voice is undeniable, but I've always found you a little bit dated. Kitty, I'm a fan of yours. I'm excited by you." He finally opted to send Brookes home, as did Kelly Rowland, who described Brucknell (more) »

Judges who don't click, hours of vapid coverage, contestants who've had a charisma bypass – the show needs sorting out
At this point it's fairly well established that The X Factor isn't doing very well this year. On both Saturday and Sunday it lost about 2 million viewers against the second weekend of live shows of 2010. Believe the front page of Monday's Sun and you'll know that things are so bad that Simon Cowell has exploded in fury at the news . He has literally exploded. Presumably the damage was limited by Cowell's flame-retardant asbestos hair, but it's still a worrying sign.
Not that the low numbers are much of a surprise. Compared with last year, The X Factor is a shadow of itself. For some reason it just feels flat. So what's going on?
The most obvious difference is the new judging panel. Sure, it's kept a tie to the past by »

The producers of Strictly Come Dancing might have ensured that there was no ratings battle with The X Factor this year, but last night's viewing figures suggest that going toe-to-toe with the Cowell behemoth wouldn't have been the disaster many had predicted. Improving on last week's ratings by around 300k, Strictly scored 9.05m (39.2%). Meanwhile, on an evening which saw Louis Walsh describe Frankie Cocozza as having lost his 'swagger' and Gary Barlow compare Sami Brookes to a cruise ship singer, The X Factor dipped by over 600k to 9.8m (39.1%). A strong showing on timeshift (454k, 2%), however, means that in overall viewers the ITV production still has plenty of breathing space. ITV2's The Xtra Factor followed the main show with 605k (3.1%), beaten in the multichannel ratings by ITV3's Foyle's (more) »

Loose Women's Jane McDonald has hit out at Gary Barlow's criticism of X Factor's Sami Brookes. Barlow described Louis Walsh's Overs act as sounding like a "cruise ship singer" following her rendition of 'I Will Always Love You' on last night's live show. McDonald, who found fame as a cruise ship performer, called in to ITV2's The Xtra Factor to stick up for Brookes and responded to Barlow's cruise slur. "If you're called a cruise ship singer, take it and run with it darling," said McDonald. "Cruise ship singers work 24/7 and you get a job anywhere in the world as a cruise ship (more) »
