After initially studying Network Engineering, he graduated from the Rietveld International School of Art & Design in Amsterdam with a bachelors degree of Fine Arts focusing on filmmaking and received his master's degree in Persian Studies at Leiden University.
At Leiden University he studied "The Death of Yazdgerd" the fall of Ancient Iran's last Zoroastrian King, a book and screenplay by the well known playwright, Bahram Beyzai. In addition he analyzed several films by Jafar Panahi, portraying urban life in the Post-War Tehran of the 1990's.
Babak's own films explored the lives of offbeat, adventurous characters, many of them artists, in cities around the world. As he expertly guided his subjects through situations that reveal their innermost stories, his documentaries tell the tale of boundaries between fiction and reality. These award-winning and internationally acclaimed films have been lauded in film festivals and art shows and featured in the New York Times and other media.
Babak Andishmand has given filmmaking workshops to children in Canarsie, Brooklyn and served as a volunteer art teacher with Free Arts NYC in East Harlem and Alphabet City, providing children with a unique combination of educational art and mentoring programs that help them to realize their fullest potential.
