‘Orphan Black’ Review: Final Season Gets the Fun, Frightening and Feminist Farewell It Deserves

9 June 2017 3:43 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Orphan Black” goes into its final season with nothing to prove.

After all, it followed up its rockiest storyline with the Castor clones with an excellent fourth season, it earned universal critical acclaim, and star Tatiana Maslany landed a well-deserved Emmy for her breakout role. That’s not too shabby for a show with a fierce but small viewership. Because of that, the series is free to do exactly what it wants and does so well: let the sestras lead.

With all the clone hijinks and amazing performances by Maslany, it’s sometimes forgotten that “Orphan Black” is one of the most feminist shows on TV, and not just because most of its main characters are female. From the beginning, the show broke down gender stereotypes and featured women in all of the powerful roles, letting them have complex identities independent of their relationship to men.

Trailer Watch: Clone Club Preps for Its Final Fight in “Orphan Black” Season 5

23 May 2017 9:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Orphan Black”: Jan Thijs

Last time we saw the Clone Club sisters (all portrayed by Tatiana Maslany), they weren’t doing great. Resident Bad Clone Rachel had abducted Sarah’s family, Sarah and Cosima were severely sick or injured, and Alison and Donnie (Kristian Bruun) were on the lamb with Helena. Luckily, the new trailer for “Orphan Black” hints that the sisters will find their way back to each other and “fight as one” in the last batch of episodes.

Plot details are vague in the footage, but Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy) ominously says, “Whoever the man behind the curtain is, he’s put Rachel in charge.” It seems that the show’s fifth and final season will see the clones face off against Rachel and their creator once and for all. Along the way, we’ll get to see Sarah plot to get her daughter (Skyler Wexler) back, Rachel look smug, and Alison freak out. So classic “Orphan Black,” basically.

Maslany won a much-deserved Emmy in 2016 for her performance(s) in “Orphan Black.” She has also served as a producer on the feminist sci-fi series since 2015. “Two Lovers and a Bear,” “The Other Half,” and “Woman in Gold” are among her other credits.

The final season of “Orphan Black” premieres June 10 on BBC America.
