‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ Finally Gets Love at Location Managers Awards

Spurned and ignored during the lengthy awards season that ended with the Oscars, Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (above) finally scored a big win as outstanding location feature at the first annual Location Managers Guild of America awards on Saturday night at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” took the prize for outstanding location TV program. In addition, “Thrones” location manager Robbie Boake won the trophy for outstanding achievement by a location pro-tv.

“Mitty” shot in Iceland, New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver. “Thrones” shoots in Northern Ireland, Croatia, Morocco, Malta and other locations.

The prize for achievement by a location pro-film went to location manager Ilt Jones for “Iron Man 3,” which filmed in North Carolina, California and Florida.

Staff at the Location Managers Guild Of America (Lmga) have announced the winners of its first Annual Location Managers Guild Of America Awards.

Ilt Jones won Outstanding Achievement By A Location Professional – Feature Film for Iron Man 3, while Robert Boake won corresponding TV honours for Game Of Thrones.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty took the award for Outstanding Location Feature Film and once again Game Of Thrones prevailed in the TV category.

The prize for Outstanding Film Commission went to Albuquerque, which has hosted Breaking Bad and Lone Survivor, among others.

Lmga president Nancy Haecker presided over the ceremony as Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs presented Alexander Payne with the Eva Monley Award for his “dedicated understanding of the power of quality locations to enhance a story.”

Payne is currently filming at a quality location and was unable to attend the ceremony.

Cinematogrpher Haskell Wexler received the Humanitarian Award from Billy Crystal, while the Lifetime »

With Game of Thrones gearing up for its fourth season premiere, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, during which she recalled her first audition for the role of the Mother of Dragons, as well as bringing with her a clip from the eagerly-anticipated new season, which sees Dany joined by Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman), Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel)....

Meanwhile, we've also got a new featurette on the Making of Game of Thrones which sees location manager Robert Boake discussing the challenges of shooting the new season on location, followed by a couple of TV spots...

Today we have two new featurettes for all we Game of Thrones fans. The first is a behind the scenes featurette, Artisan Piece #3, about the Belfast location. The second one is a completely charming history of the series (spoilery if you haven’t seen all three seasons) that is funny and interesting and features fan art.

HBO included the artists’ names and sites in the post of the featurette, and we’ve included them too, along with all the online Game of Thrones-related links.

Among other honors they have racked up, “American Hustle,” “Her” and “Nebraska” can add the inaugural Location Managers Guild of America Awards. The other nominees in this categories are scouts for “Iron Man 3″ and “Saving Mr. Banks.” Among TV programs, location managers for “Game of Thrones,” “House of Cards,” “Breaking Bad,” “Behind the Candelabra” and “Scandal” were nominated.

“We are ecstatic with our nominees,” said guild president Nancy Haecker. “They represent the enormous artistic contribution of locations to the vision, message and tone of production. We are equally excited about the eclectic choices in theme and content, as well as representation of location professionals from around the globe,”

The Eva Monley Award, the Humanitarian Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award will be the honorary laurels presented at the ceremony.

The winners will be announced on March 29 at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
