The producer of hit Netflix original series “3%,” Sao Paulo’s Boutique Filmes, is teaming with Warner Channel Brasil to produce half-hour “Mal Me Quer” (Love Me Not), Warner Bros.’ first comedy original in Brazil.
Co-produced and to be aired by Warner Channel Brasil, “Love Me Not” went into production Aug. 14 in Brazil. “3%” producer Tiago Mello will executive produce for Boutique Filmes.
Success in such a large TV market as Brazil is vital for any domestic TV series. But as Brazilian series score on Netflix, and win prizes at Cannes, such as a Mip Drama Screening’s Grand Jury Prize for Globo’s “Jailers,” the ambitions of Boutique Filmes and Warner Channel, who co-own overseas rights, run beyond the domestic TV scene. Boutiques Filmes’ Tiago Mello, “3%” producer and executive producer on “Love Me Not” will attend Mipcom to explore format remakes.

Watch where you camp. Beware of Crittus! Another well-made horror short that you all should check out. Crittus is written and directed by Canadian-Brazilian filmmaker Marcus Alqueres, a proof-of-concept for a nifty horror project that could be a feature. The story follows a guy named Sean, played by Felipe Abib, out on a soul-searching camping trip who encounters something weird in the forest. What could it be? You have to watch to find out. I quite like how this seems to be play like it's a typical camping horror, but then throws a few cool twists into the mix. I definitely would like to see more from this. Alqueres is already set to work on a few other feature projects, so there's plenty to watch out for from this filmmaker. Beware. Here's the film's official description: "Filmed on a micro-budget, Crittus is a horror proof-of-concept short following the protagonist, Sean...

It’s called Brazilian Western, but director René Sampaio’s debut feature film could better be described as something of an amalgamation of genres. The movie, set in 1980s Brasilia and loosely based on a popular Brazilian folk song of the same name, tells the story of an outlaw named João (Fabrício Boliveira) who moves to the bustling city to start his life anew. At first, things seem to go well: his distant cousin Pablo (Cesar Troncoso), a local drug pin, graciously takes him in. But then, a drug delivery on behalf of his cousin goes horribly wrong, putting him on the bad side of not only the corrupt cops but also the crazy drug dealer Jeremias (Felipe Abib) who has them all in his...

From director René Sampaio comes an action/drama titled Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo) which will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, (making its Canadian premiere), in the Contemporary World Cinema section - a group that was announced this morning. Here's how Tiff describes it: Loosely based on legendary Brasilia rock band Legiao Urbana’s seminal folk song, René Sampaio’s lyrical, fable-like debut feature follows a young man from the provinces who decides to try his luck in the capital, where he falls in with a rough crowd — and falls for a senator’s daughter. The film stars Fabrício Boliveira, Isis Valverde, Felipe Abib, Antônio...
