- Reed had worked at the Santa Maria school coaching football, basketball, golf and teaching physical education since 2007.
- Reed played basketball for Indiana University under coach Bobby Knight. In March 2000, Reed claimed that he was choked by Knight during practice in 1997, a charge that Knight denied. A tape of the incident surfaced, and a "zero tolerance" was instituted for coach Knight. After a student claimed that Knight grabbed his arm, Knight was fired in September 2000.
- He is survived by his wife, Kelly Reed of Nipomo, California and their two daughters.
- I don't have any feelings about it, mostly because I've had to stand alone for so long. In a way, I've been proven right, but that doesn't make my life any easier.
- Maybe that was Coach Knight's fault and maybe it was partly my fault, but if I can handle what I've been through, then I know I can handle what lies ahead.
