'Finding Carter' is, improbably, a subtle show about kidnapping

8 July 2014 7:15 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

There’s something appealingly retro about MTV’s latest scripted offering—and not just because Finding Carter bears a striking resemblance to Caroline B. Cooney’s beloved 1990 novel The Face on the Milk Carton. (You may know it better as the inspiration for a TV movie that aired in 1995).

These days, shows for and about teenagers tend to fall into one of two categories: the Ryan Murphy-esque dramedy (high-energy, soaked with pop culture references, alternating wildly between irony and sincerity; see MTV’s own Faking It or Awkward. for examples), or the Gossip Girl-ian glitzy melodrama (think privileged »

TV Review: ‘Finding Carter’

6 July 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

What sounds like a highly provocative concept quickly devolves into a standard-issue, ABC Family-style soap in “Finding Carter,” a series whose protagonist is the right age for MTV, yet which feels fuzzily off-brand. Kathryn Prescott stars as a 16-year-old girl who discovers she was abducted at age 3 and is reunited with a family she doesn’t know, while missing the woman who happily raised her. Granted, MTV ought to be able to branch out within its younger demo, but this is still such a me-too idea it’s pretty hard to get spirited away by it.

Although one can appreciate the desire to plunge right into the story (created by Emily Silver, who shares writing credit with showrunner Terri Minsky), it might help if viewers had a little longer to get to know Prescott’s Carter in her initial environs, before a chance arrest lands her in the system and leads to her unwelcome, »

We have the first new drama series commissioned  by MTV‘s new programming team under president Susanne Daniels. The network has picked up hourlong pilot Finding Carter to series with a 12-episode order in the kind of success story that inspires young writers. Up-and-coming scribe Emily Silver, a story editor on Bones, originally penned Finding Carter as a writing sample, which was sent to ABC Family and MTV in 2012. When Mina Lefevre moved from ABC Family to MTV to head scripted development in January 2013, she put the project on a fast track. Veteran Terri Minsky (Sex And The City) was brought in as executive producer and, following a quick rewrite, the script landed a pilot order, which has now been followed by a series green light.  Finding Carter, directed by Scott Speer is about teenage girl Carter (Kathryn Prescott) who seemingly has the perfect life with fun-loving single mom Lori »
