Annecy: Flanders’ Jan Bultheel, Arielle Sleutel Prep ‘Canaan’

Annecy: Flanders’ Jan Bultheel, Arielle Sleutel Prep ‘Canaan’
Annecy– “A Flemish Western where the Indians win,” says Jan Bultheel of his second feature currently in development. A romantic drama set during the emigration of millions of Europeans to the New World in around 1840, “Canaan” is the second directorial outing of Flemish animation director Bultheel, whose debut “Cafard” – “a straightforward tale of revenge, loss, survival and self-reckoning,” wrote Variety – caught the attention of critics and animation geeks.

“Canaan” was one of the three Flemish feature projects pitched at Annecy in a Flanders Animation Focus session at fest’s Mifa market on June 17 . Event also showcased eight TV series and delivered detailed information about Belgium’s tax shelter scheme as well as regional incentives. Variety talked to “Canaan” producer Arielle Sleutel, at Tondo Films, and Bultheel. “Canaan” is scheduled to start production by summer 2017.

“Canaan” is your second feature, after “Cafard.” Could you take us its plot?

Bultheel: “Canaan” is the story of Roza,

Interview: Jan Bultheel Talks Cafard

David Opie sits down with director Jan Bultheel to talk about Cafard, a Flemish animation that follows the story of a Belgian soldier during Wwi. The film is currently having a successful run at film festivals worldwide and our four star review is available to read here…

David Opie: Cafard is a remarkable technical achievement. Why did you choose to tell a wartime story through animation?

Jan Bultheel: That’s simply because I am primarily an animated film director. I also thought that through the filter of the graphics, the story could have a more universal message. Although the film is really based on historical facts during the first world war, it is first and foremost the story of a father which could have taken place in any war, any where in the world at any time. The stylized graphics lend Cafard an abstraction that would not be possible with a live action movie.

Issue 3 of Zombies vs Robots is now available and part 3 of ‘Inherit the Earth’ finds humanity finally returning to the surface of Earth and making a big splash….literally but what are the thoughts of those who lurk beneath the waves? What is the robots current role in the events beginning to unfold? Chris Ryall performs excellently with his alternative zombie apocalypse storyline.

In the second story of this issue, titled ‘Of Metal and Bone’, a young boy comes across an old warbot and decides to spend the night. The simple art style by Ashley Wood in this tale is very appealing and only disappointing in

Comic Book Review – Zombies vs Robots #1

Andrew Newton reviews Zombies vs Robots #1…

Zombies vs Robots #1 from Idw is a new take on the zombie apocalypse theme. Created by Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood, this series brings us a world where humanity has all but been destroyed. This issue brings us 3 stories set in this brilliant and imaginative world.

The main story titled ‘Inherit the Earth’, written by Chris Ryall and with art by Anthony Diecidue, introduces us to our barren world, a world where the remnants of our cities and towns lay empty but for the hordes of zombies. Exploring this world are robots but what will they find and what are their intentions?

Secondly, ‘Tales of ZvR’ is a very short feature of one of Earth’s last remaining humans looking for his father. The artwork by Ashley Wood is very simply done but works tremendously well with the story itself.

Finally, Part 1 of our
