Cameos Transform Free Samples Into Something Special

Cameos Transform Free Samples Into Something Special
Vibrant cameo performances by two of our most engaging young actors—Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Ritter—along with one film legend—Tippi Hedren—transform this modest comedy into something special. Hungover from a night of partying, Jillian (Jess Weixler), who's just dropped out of college, reluctantly agrees to fill in for a friend at her job running a dilapidated ice cream truck. This is Los Angeles, so there are weirdos aplenty walking up to Jillian's window, most of whom she chases off with withering (but funny) sarcasm. Making their feature debuts, director Jay Gammill and screenwriter Jim Beggarly wait too long to reveal the hurts that have made Jillian so brittle, yet Weixler subtly suggests that Jillian regrets her every word. She's alluring, which is why tw...

Jess Weixler and Director Jay Gammill Talk Free Samples, Making an Unpleasant Character Likeable, and Changes from the Script

Free Samples is a quirky indie dramedy about Jillian (in a truly terrific performance by Jess Weixler), a law school drop-out who fills in as server at her friend’s ice cream truck. While spending the day giving out free samples to eccentric and oddball locals, she also finds herself re-evaluating what and who she wants in life. The film also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Jason Ritter, Halley Feiffer and Tippi Hedren. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Jess Weixler and director Jay Gammill talked about what it was about the script that made them want to get involved with the project, how this great cast came together, the challenges in making an often unpleasant character likeable, and how much the final cut of the film changed from the original script. Jay also talked about doing another film with screenwriter Jim Beggarly, while Jess talked about wanting to

DVD Release: The Kitchen

DVD Release Date: April 9, 2013

Price: DVD $26.95

Studio: Monterey

Laura Prepon (r.) and Dreama Walker talk it over in The Kitchen.

Likable ladies Laura Prepon (Lay the Favorite) and Dreama Walker (Compliance) star in the 2012 independent comedy The Kitchen.

Okay, here’s what we’re looking at: Jennifer (Prepon) just left her job; her boyfriend Paul (Bryan Greenberg, Friends With Benefits) has been cheating; and her cynical sister Penny (Walker) has an inappropriate announcement. And then there’s Stan (Matt Bush, Margaret), who’s in love with Jennifer, and Kenny (Tate Ellington), who’s in love with Penny. Throw in a party to celebrate Jennifer’s 30th birthday, a couple of dueling bands in the back yard and a manic depressive party photographer who may have forgotten to take his meds, and you’ve got a fairly madcap scenario in the making.

2012 Austin Film Festival Announces Titles, Including ‘Not Fade Away,’ ‘Flight,’ ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ and More

While most of Austin, Texas is currently busy gearing up for Fantastic Fest (including our own Fantastic Fest Death Squad), we’d be remiss to not mention that another one of Atx’s homegrown film festivals, the concisely-named Austin Film Festival, has just released their lineup. And it’s a real beauty! The festival, kicking off in just under a month, will open with David Chase’s Not Fade Away and will also include screenings of such buzzed-about titles as Flight, Silver Linings Playbook, The Sessions, Quartet, and The Sapphires. The festival has yet to announce their Closing Night Film, but with such an already-strong lineup, it should be a doozy. After the break, take a look at the current feature-length lineup for the 2012 Austin Film Festival and Conference, including listings for their comedy and documentary sections. First Poster and Images from The Kitchen with Laura Prepon & Bryan Greenberg

Best known for their work on the small screen, Laura Prepon (That ’70s Show) and Bryan Greenberg (How to Make it in America) are both great in all I’ve seen them in to date, and after starring opposite each other in ABC’s short-lived October Road, they’re set to reunite for the big screen this year in The Kitchen.

The first poster and images have made their way online, giving us a nice first look at the main players of the ensemble comedy, set in its entirety within the titular room.

“In this ensemble comedy set entirely inside a kitchen in Silverlake, a birthday party is about to start.

The party belongs to that of Jennifer (Laura Prepon), who’s about to turn 30. But she is in no mood to party today. She has just left her job, as well as her cheating boyfriend, Paul (Bryan Greenberg). Her

[Tribeca Review] Free Samples

Free Samples, directed by Jay Gammill, feels like a short film stretched out in to feature length, to only a mild degree of success. Starring indie darling Jess Weixler as Jillian, the film serves as a chamber movie of sorts, if a desolate parking lot can be a chamber. We open with Jillian on another drunken night, bullshitting with friend Nancy (Halley Feiffer), Nancy’s dumbbell boyfriend Wally (Jason Ritter) and a charming stranger they call Tex (Jesse Eisenberg).

Cut to the morning after. Jillian wakes up naked and hungover in Nancy’s apartment, only to find out her friend needs a big favor: sub for her in handing out free samples of a new ice cream-esque type of dessert all day. Without much of a choice, Jillian concedes.

And so goes the remaining 70 minutes of the brief, 80-minute film. Jillian sits, and stands, in a truck handing out free

Five Questions With “Free Samples” Director Jay Gammill

Watching the trailer for Jay Gammill’s new comedy Free Samples, one can almost hear the ghost of Clerks‘ Dante Hicks echoing in the distance – complaining, “I’m not even supposed to be here today.” The latest in a long line of dead-end job dramedies, Free Samples follows slacker twenty-something Jillian (Jess Wexler) as she fills in for her friend handing out free samples all day from inside an ice cream truck. Premiering this week in Tribeca’s Spotlight section, Gammill’s film aligns an impressive ensemble of indie notables, including Wexler, Jesse Eisenberg, and Jason Ritter.

Filmmaker: Can you talk a bit about Free Samples‘ gensis? How did you first get involved with the project? And what was the collaborative process like with writer Jim Beggarly?

Gammill: Jim Beggarly the idea of Free Samples in the spring of 2008 soon after we’d met and knew we wanted to work together.

A Story for Generation Y

Tribeca: Tell us a little about Free Samples. How would you describe the movie in your own words? Jay Gammill: Free Samples is a film about finding yourself. I think we've all experienced times when our idea of what our life should look like is at odds with what it actually is, but eventually life intervenes, and so this film is about the journey through the wayward moments. It confronts that journey front and center, and through Jillian, the main character, it pokes some fun at it. Everyone makes choices in life, be they good or bad, and those moments of decision are the ones that matter. I think this film really says that this happens to everyone. Tribeca: Every Generation Y-er can relate to Free Samples. Was it the fact that Jim Beggarly's script addressed a much-shared experience that drew you to the project? Jay Gammill: Well,

Sex, Love And Ice Cream: Trailer & Images For 'Free Samples' Featuring Jesse Eisenberg

The 11th Tribeca Film Festival is only a few weeks away, and will feature plenty of indie movies vying for audience attention and studio distribution, so credit newcomer director Jay Gammill and Film Market for getting the word out early on their quirky comedy "Free Samples." The film stars Jess Weixler — known most notably for staging a war on penises in Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror-comedy "Teeth" — as a Stanford law-school dropout who gets stuck working in an ice cream truck for a day and is distracted by every goofy weirdo in town while she tries to figure out what to do with her life. Among those distractions is Jason Ritter (who also worked with Weixler in the 2009 romantic drama "Peter and Vandy") and Jesse Eisenberg, who could be Weixler's love interest in the movie (or could just appear in a handful of scenes).

Seeing Eisenberg as the earnest romantic isn't completely new,

Excellent First Trailer and Poster for Free Samples with Jesse Eisenberg & Jess Weixler

Upcoming indie comedy-drama Free Samples isn’t a film I knew much about beyond the name until just watching the trailer a moment ago. Having done that, I’m now already hoping it’ll get picked up for distribution soon.

The film is making its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival next month, and with a cast including Jess Weixler (Teeth*) in the lead, supported by Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) and Jason Ritter (Parenthood), I’m really hoping it will turn out as good as this trailer looks.

“Jillian is having a bad day. She’s got a raging hangover, she’s starting to think dropping out of Stanford Law to become an artist wasn’t the best career move, and things are weird with her faraway fiancé. Can spending the day parked in an ice cream truck doling out samples—and a good dose of sass—to oddball Angelenos shake
