Reese Witherspoon has backed out of a film, and a vitamin maker wants its money back for a product placement. Natrol Inc. filed the lawsuit yesterday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Envision, its chief Remington Chase and their product placement firm, Brand-in Entertainment. According to the lawsuit and an attached agreement (see here), Natrol put up $180,000 in 2011 so that Witherspoon's character would show off the plaintiff's product in the movie as her favorite brand of vitamins, the only brand she trusted, a product found at almost any major retailer, and a product that helped her sleep

The new Mark Wahlberg movie Lone Survivor is the remarkable true story of four Us Navy SEALs on an ill-fated mission in Afghanistan in 2005. Due for release in the UK on 31 January, the film has already been praised by Us reviewers for its brutally believable portrayal of heroism and sacrifice. Yet as remarkable true stories go, the film is rivalled by the biography of its executive producers, Remington Chase and Stepan Martirosyan, who emerged as Hollywood players in 2011 and have since become, they claim, the biggest independent financiers in town. »
The producers of “Lone Survivor” Remington Chase and Stefan Martirosian are convicted cocaine dealers and have ties to Russian oil and an alleged contract murder, according to an investigation published last week by L.A. Weekly. Contrary to certain public reports most of the individuals TheWrap spoke with said this won’t affect their business — provided their money is good. »

A version of this story first appeared in the Jan. 17 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. In the wake of revelations of a criminal past, film financiers Remington Chase and Stepan Martirosyan have gone from indie darlings to radioactive. The U.S.-born Chase and Armenian Martirosyan, who financed 2013's Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg starrer 2 Guns and Wahlberg's Lone Survivor, are scrambling following a Jan. 2 La Weekly report detailing cocaine trafficking convictions, prison time and stints as federal informants (both have gone by other aliases in the past). Found footage – what a yawn
Is anybody else fed up with the found footage genre? Come on Hollywood, you've had a good run with the thing and we all know the $5m (£3m) price tag means this will end up being profitable for Paramount, but for the sake of originality can you mine a new genre? Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones arrived on $18.2m (£11.1m) in second place and in the process became the first of the last four entries in the horror franchise not to open at number one. The box-office number is quite a way down from the $29m (£17.7m) October 2012 debut of Paranormal 4. Tweaking the story to centre »

Heading into the weekend business associates of Envision Entertainment were reeling in light of scandalous allegations to emerge involving the founders of the financier-producer.
According to an investigative article last week in La Weekly, Remington Chase and Stefan Martirosian have a colourful history involving arrests, prison time, FBI drug stings, criminal acquaintances, the black diamond trade and informant activity.
Us-born Chase and Armenian immigrant Martirosian deny certain activity outlined in the report or at least specific elements contained therein.
Nonetheless the full impact of the development on the independent space is yet to play out. The revelations will have shocked those who have benefited from the deep pockets of Envision, backed by Russian oligarch Vitaly Grigoriants.

The producers of “Lone Survivor” Remington Chase and Stefan Martirosian are convicted cocaine dealers and have ties to Russian oil and an alleged contract murder, according to an investigation by the L.A. Weekly. Hollywood financiers Remington Chase and Stefan Martirosian (at left, Chase, with actor Gerard Butler and Martirosian) carry separate convictions for cocaine trafficking from 1993 and that’s hardly the most colorful – not to say sinister – part of their backgrounds, according to the article by L.A. Weekly’s Gene Maddaus. This includes Chase’s history as an FBI informant, and Martirosian’s alleged involvement in a contract killing in Russia. »
