Fast Girls DVD Review

10 October 2012 3:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

No doubt once again hoping to cash-in on the immense good will generated by the London Olympics — having previously preceded the games with its theatrical release back in June — Regan Hall’s Fast Girls this week lands on DVD and Blu-ray. But does it still stand up now that the endorphins have worn off and the Olympians have finally crossed the finishing line?

Promising young runner Shania Andrews (Lenora Crichlow) has offset her tumultuous home-life with the help of kindly shop-worker Brian (Philip Davis), who has trained her in anticipation of the 2011 World Athletics Championships. Leaving her mentor behind in order to work with professional trainer Tommy (Noel Clarke) and physiotherapist Carl (Bradley James), Shania progresses from local to national level alongside privileged rival Lisa Temple (Lily James), where the two are also asked to join the British 4×200 metres relay team.

When sitting down to watch a sports movie, it’s highly likely you could accurately predict the plot and the character arcs before you’ve even pressed play. What is vital for films of this type to stand out is simplicity and humanity. Fast Girls, nicely timed after the Olympic summer, has both in spades.

Following Shania (Crichlow) as she prepares for the World Athletic Championships, all the staples are present: troubled home life, teaming with a rival Lisa (James), love interest Carl (Bradley James), and a rousing finale where all the pieces fall into place and everyone smiles. What makes Fast Girls stand out is Critchlow; as »

Fast Girls

Stars: Lenora Crichlow, Lily James, Noel Clarke, Rupert Graves, Bradley James, Philip Davis, Lorraine Burroughs, Lashana Lynch, Hannah Frankson | Written by Jay Basu, Noel Clarke, Jon Croker, Roy Williams | Directed by Regan Hall

After a summer of sport The United Kingdom, especially London at times feels like it’s clinging onto the high that was achieved in those weeks.  We’ve even had the government trying to use that uplifting feeling to sell what they see as their “brand”, where of course the people see it as their country.  Enough of politics though or I’d be complaining for a few thousand words.  The fact is the Olympics were a great success, and if you want to bring back some of that magic Fast Girls may be the perfect film for you.

Using the background of athletics Fast Girls look at the relationship between two girls, Shania and Lisa. »

Bradley James Q&A: 'I enjoyed massaging women's legs on Fast Girls'

4 October 2012 1:01 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Merlin star Bradley James hopped onto the big screen this summer to play physio Carl in Noel Clarke's Olympics-themed Fast Girls. While the likes of Lenora Crichlow and Lily James were in the midst of strict training regimes to prepare, James told Digital Spy that he had one thing on his mind: convincingly giving leg massages. Also up for discussion were the ingredients needed to make a good sports movie, how he related to Fast Girls and James's experience watching Mo Farah bag an Olympic gold medal this summer. What drew you to Fast Girls and made you want to be a part of it?

"I think it was the fact that I was able to massage women's legs, professionally speaking, and not have someone report me to the police for it! I was happy to take on that tough role." The girls went through a tough training regime »

Fast Girls Review: Dull Olympic Promotional Material

16 June 2012 5:24 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

With the London Olympics just around the corner, it is little surprise that filmmakers are mining the hype and excitement for all it is worth. It’s just a shame that they haven’t managed to concoct a more thrilling and jubilant effort than Fast Girls, a garden variety sports film which rattles through as many cliches as possible right through to the finish line.

The debut feature from Regan Hall follows athlete Shania Andrews (Lenora Crichlow), a runner who competes locally. When she is offered to come aboard a relay team, it means joining forces with local rival Lisa Temple (Lily James), making for the most uneasy of partnerships. Inevitably, it is putting aside their differences – a tall order – which will allow them to take Gold at the World Championships.

Even for the fairly breezy standards of an inspirational sports film, Fast Girls is completely bereft of nuance, »

Doing for 1980s hair metal what Mamma Mia! did for Abba, this glossy musical gives you the broad pleasures of pantomime rather than rock'n'roll danger, with theatrical star turns and a playlist of power ballads hung around an archetypal tale of a smalltown girl and a wannabe rock star boy on La's Sunset Strip. You can stop believin' now.

Fast Girls – review

15 June 2012 2:38 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This British film has energy and fun, and feels like the great niece of Chariots of Fire

Here is a likable and fun British film: it's a little like Bend It Like Beckham. Four female athletes are preparing for the world championships in London in 2011 – the 2012 Olympics in all but name. Coach Tommy (Noel Clarke) is trying to weld these feisty track stars into a 4x100m relay team. But there's some serious aggravation between Lisa (Lily James), a posh princess whose dad is a former medal winner with political power, and Shania (Lenora Crichlow), who comes from a tough council estate. Lily's dad is incidentally played by Rupert Graves who weirdly looks as if he could be the father of teen diving star Tom Daley. There is a witty scene where the quartet insult some horrible blokes in a club and then outrun them on the street. There are »

Director: Regan Hall

Cast: Lenora Crichlow, Lily James, Lorraine Burroughs, Noel Clarke, Bradley James, Rupert Graves

Running time: 91 minutes

Certificate: 12A

Synopsis: Two rival athletes from different backgrounds become Britain’s best chance of winning, and must work together or sacrifice their shot at the gold medal…

As Britain in overwhelmed by Olympic sponsors, Fast Girls may be best advert of the lot, released just as the games are set to begin. Although copyright ensures London 2012 is never explicitly mentioned, the event is a key factor in the film. It’s the story of a working-class girl who becomes a sports star, and ties in nicely with the Olympic ethos – everyone is in it together.

Fast Girls is a strong feature-length debut from director Regan Hall, cut his teeth with commercials and shorts. His advertisement-based background is evident in the film’s stylistics, however: shots are delicately planned and precise, »

Lily James: Catch her while you can: an actress going for gold

11 June 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | The Independent | See recent The Independent news »

Aged 23 and barely two years out of drama school, Lily James is already a veteran multi-tasker. She was playing Desdemona opposite Clarke Peters and Dominic West in Sheffield last year when she landed her first lead film role, in Fast Girls. By day she would pound around the track at Don Valley, getting into shape to play a British sprinter. By night she would squeeze into period costume for Othello at The Crucible. "I was wearing a corset and I wouldn't be able to breathe because my abs were hurting from all the sit-ups I had to do." »

Fast Girls: the Cannes sprint

23 May 2012 9:21 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The cast of a new British sports comedy welcome some Cannes glamour as they search for a distributor by running on the beach

There are some Fast Girls in town. The cast of a new British film about the members of a relay squad are spending the day promoting the work – by running backwards and forwards, Baywatch-style, through the sea. When I catch up with them, they've slipped back into beach footwear (four-inch heels) and are sipping champagne while waving goodbye to Stephen Tompkinson. "See you soon, babes," he says.

Although clearly seeking to cash in on the imminent Olympics, Fast Girls, for copyright reasons, actually concerns a fictional championship. The six-week training schedule before shooting began was tough, says Lashana Lynch: "You just had to let your social life go. Your day was structured around eating six meals. I kept cancelling on people. You'd get home and be knackered and think, »

HeyUGuys Fast Girls Set Visit Report

Not to perpetuate a stereotype, but as a film journalist, I tend not to spend much time in training venues. Consequently, it was with some surprise that I found myself walking around a sports centre in the East End of London at some hideous time in the morning.

Of course, there was a reason for my impromptu interest in athletics – the same reason that the exterior of the building was dominated by huge white trucks and enormous lights, mounted on crank stands – it was currently being used as the location for the filming of Fast Girls.

“The idea for it, I had before Britain got the 2012 Games. That was four years ago – longer. I believe then it was World Championships. Then, obviously the Olympics rejuvenated the idea, and could we do it.”

I don’t know if you’ve heard this, but apparently the Olympic Games are coming to London this summer. I know right! You’d think someone would have mentioned this. Apparently the producers of Adulthood and The Iron Lady knew as Fast Girls, a good-natured, feel good sports drama set in the world of athletics couldn’t coincide better with the Olympics if they convinced Danny Boyle to screen it at the opening ceremony.

Co-written by and co-starring Noel Clarke, Fast Girls follows the journey of Shania (Being Human’s Lenora Crichlow), a young woman from a poor background who runs a mean hundred metres. Her prowess gets her into the Gb squad and »
