'Hateful Eight' looks good, but 'Lion' may be Harvey Weinstein's secret Oscar player

14 May 2015 12:19 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Cannes — Harvey Weinstein appears to be in a good place. The Weinstein Company is, after all, coming off three-straight hits with "The Imitation Game," "Paddington" and "Woman in Gold." Thursday evening the industry titan held court for his annual Cannes preview, noting that he loved this year's slate while insisting that that's not always the case. The highlight of the evening was intended to be the first footage screened of Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," but this pundit was much more impressed with Garth Davis' "Lion."   Based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, "Lion" chronicles how, thanks to his inherent curiosity, a 5-year-old boy is separated from his family in India. Now, 25 years later, Saroo (Dev Patel) has grown up after being raised by an Australian couple (Nicole Kidman and David Wenham) and begins a search for the biological family he believes is still waiting for him to come home. »

We’re just a week removed from The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and already people are moving on to talk about the next one. Captain America: Civil War is the next chapter (after Ant-Man) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this one, (really, you guys) is the one you’ve been waiting for, not the one that came out seven days ago, whatever it was called.

The film involves a rift between the Avengers, particularly Captain America and Iron Man, and how Cap leads the new Avengers to deal with some political strife. We already know that it’s set to include a cameo with Spider-man, but now several other cast members were announced this week. First, Emily VanCamp, who appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will be reprising her role. Second is Paul Rudd, who after being introduced in Ant-Man will make an appearance in Civil War as well. »

Lily James Swaps Frocks For Felons In Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’

7 May 2015 11:30 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Having impressed audiences with her title turn in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, Lily James is getting some grit under her nails for her next role.

Baby Driver – directed by Ant-man evacuee Edgar Wright – sees Ansel Elgort up to his neck in trouble when he’s forced to work as a getaway driver for an underworld nasty. James is reportedly playing the woman he loves, who inevitably gets caught up in the rubber-burning mayhem.

Though she’s known for period fare like Downton Abbey, James has taken contemporary roles, most notably in sports feature Fast Girls. Wright’s latest should find her consolidating her rising star status and proving she can do more than waft about in impossibly tiny corsets. However before she does so, she’ll be appearing in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.

Produced by Working Title and Big Talk in association with TriStar, Baby Driver marks something of a departure for the helmer, »

James will play his love interest, a diner waitress. While I think we're all still recovering from losing Wright's vision of Ant-Man (and we're going to have to get over that someday), the prospect of a new all-out Edgar Wright film is extremely exciting. THR has an updated synopsis: Ansel Elgort is set to star as a young mute man who has an ear condition that forces him to constantly listen to music in order to drown out the constant ringing in his ears.
