AFI Alums Pitch in for Classmate’s Movie

AFI Alums Pitch in for Classmate’s Movie
After three years, indie writer-director Danish Renzu and producer Tara Tucker are completing “The Illegal,” a timely film about immigrants in the U.S. The saga is a testament to the filmmakers’ perseverance — and to the power of networking while in film school.

Renzu got a degree in electrical engineering from UCLA. And when he quit his full-time job at At&T after five years to concentrate on filmmaking, a mutual friend put him in touch with Tucker, who runs Tucker/Hess Prods. with her husband, Brandon Hess.

Tucker, AFI class of 2012, roped in production designer Young Ok Lee, editor Varun Vishwanath, line producer Richard King and gaffer Martin Kobylarz, all from her graduating class. Even the Pa is from AFI, she says. And the indie film lensed on the AFI campus, as well as USC; in July, the filmmakers will go to New Delhi, India, to complete the film.

Sluggish Phillauri Gets Powered By Perky Performances By Subhash K Jha review

Starring Anushka Sharma, Suraj Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh

Directed by Anshai Lal

Sad, but true. Some films work better on paper than on film. I can just imagine how excited Anushka Sharma must have been to play a ghost in a film about a restless spirit trying to find a culmination to her incomplete love story from 98 years ago.

It’s a clever premise, evoking nostalgia as well as history in cascades of poetry music and drama. Lamentably the poetry is more corny than epic, and the music, barring the Sahiba track is at best, serviceable. This is an inexcusable lapse in a film that takes us into the Punjabi heartland on two levels, the present and the past, both done in contrasting colour palates, one rusty and rugged the other peachy and saturated.

Alas, the theme of love finding a resting place in two lifetimes barely registers. For a large part,

Strong opening weekend Phillauri, which stars Anushka, along with ‘Life Of Pi’ fame actor Suraj Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh and Mehreen Pirzada, took off with a decent start on the opening day. However, it witnessed constant growth over the weekend, all thanks to Diljit's popularity in North India which brought maximum footfalls to the theatres. Phillauri Movie Review

I saw the trailer for this film by chance a couple of days after it was released. It was one of those suggested videos that magically appear in your video lists and it has been on my radar ever since. As a result I broke one of my cardinal rules for film reviews – to go into a film with no expectations. Phillauri’s trailer made sure I had expectations, after all a trailer that shows a concept that showcases originality, cultural traditions that most people are aware of can be nothing but a winner right?

A plot that is based around two love stories that run in parallel across two different era’s, Anushka Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh in the past, Suraj Sharma and Mehreen Perizada in the present. Phillauri looks at the tradition of matching kundali’s and then remedying any faults in the stars by performing a marriage with a tree.

‘Phillauri’ Review: Anushka Sharma Produces a Bollywood Ghost Story That Falls Short of Its Potential

‘Phillauri’ Review: Anushka Sharma Produces a Bollywood Ghost Story That Falls Short of Its Potential
Anushka Sharma has, over her nine years in Bollywood, proven herself with powerful roles reflecting both exceptional talent and maturity that have heightened our expectations from her as an actress. The chilling thriller “NH10,” the 2015 maiden feature from her production house Clean Slate Films — one of the few in Bollywood companies helmed by a female actor — more than lived up to the company’s mission to tell risky, non-clichéd stories. Setting all that aside, while Clean Slate’s second release, “Phillauri,” has a promising premise, it’s disappointing to see first-time director Anshai Lal’s primarily play-it-safe treatment and lethargic pacing make it an underwhelming watch.

The story opens with Kanan (Suraj Sharma, of “Life of Pi” fame), who, after a three-year stint making music in Canada, has reluctantly returned home to Amritsar, Punjab to wed his high school sweetheart, Anu (Mehreen Pirzada). His trepidation towards the marriage is only

Suraj Sharma: “Phillauri was a truly beautiful experience.”

Suraj Sharma began his journey in the world of making movies with the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated film Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee. The young actor’s first role was very challenging not only in the character he had to potray, but the fact that much of his role was filmed in front of a green screen with a CGI tiger. He excelled and won rave reviews. Originally from India, Sharma has been looking for an Indian film to do and finally found it in Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri.

Set in Punjab, Phillauri is about an Nri Punjabi boy named Kanan (played by Suraj Sharma) who returns to India to get married to his childhood sweetheart. As luck would have it, his horoscope reads that he is a Manglik and that he needs to marry a tree before he can marry Anu (played by Mehreen Pirzada) to

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

So we’re going to try something different this week, because the Weekend Warrior has been getting a little long in the tooth, and we’re worried that our busy readers may prefer shorter and more concise pieces. We’ll give this a try over the next few weeks and maybe I’ll write a little more when there’s a bigger movie opening.

How Will Power Rangers and Two Other Movies Fare Against Disney’s Beauty and the Beast?

This past weekend, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast reigned supreme with nearly $175 million--over $20 million more than my prediction (ouch!)--and even with a substantial drop this weekend, it’s unlikely that any of the three new movies will be able to

Suraj Sharma: “Phillauri is a brilliant script”

We first saw Suraj Sharma when he made his debut onscreen as Pi, in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi in 2012. Now Suraj is set to make his Hindi film debut with Anshai Lal’s Phillauri, which stars and was produced by Anushka Sharma.

The actor’s role in Phillauri is an interesting one, he plays a Canadian young man who gets trapped in a peculiar predicament — the big fat Indian wedding and if that was not all… a ghost intervenes.

Suraj revealed recently that he instantly connected to his character in Phillauri after reading the script that Karnesh Sharma, co-producer and brother of Anushka Sharma, sent to him. “It’s a brilliant script. I find the situation my character is stuck in the most fascinating. You know, he comes back from Canada, is asked to marry a tree because he is maanglik, then asked to marry a girl only
