★★☆☆☆Looking to marry the football hooligan punch 'em up with Daily Mail-baiting hoodie horror, Gabe Turner's The Guvnors (2014) does at least prove that there's still some vague spark of life in these two staples of low-budget British filmmaking. Whilst it often finds itself - knowingly or unknowingly - conforming to type, there are several commendable flourishes that raise Turner's barrel of cockney monkeys above the Rise of the Foot Soldiers and White Collar Hooligans of this world. If nothing else, it also provides the conclusive answer to that eternal question - who would win in a fight between old school crooner David Essex and Harley Sylvester, one half of Brighton hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks. 'Ave a bang on that.

Up until now, filmmaker Gabe Turner had only made two feature films – both of which were documentaries. His previous endeavour, which he directed alongside his brother Benjamin, was The Class of ’92, an engaging, entertaining and spirited effort, that offered a profound study of British society. His latest feature, The Guvnors, attempts much of the same thing, yet sadly falls short. Unfortunately the only connection this has to The Class of ’92, is that the aforementioned year is around the same time films of this ilk felt relevant and unique.

Renowned, primarily, for being one half of the Rizzle Kicks – singer Harley Sylvester is now trying his hand at acting, taking on the lead role in Gabe Turner’s gangster drama, The Guvnors.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Sylvester to discuss his move (or return, in some ways) to acting, and how much fun he had playing the leading antagonist of the piece. We also asked if there was anyone in particular he used to help craft this role, and his joy working alongside good friend and now collaborator, Turner.
The Guvnors is released on August 29th.
