Jose Padilha ("Elite Squad," "Robocop") is reportedly interested in adapting the crime thriller "The Brotherhood" at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Guy Lawson and William Oldham penned the original 2006 non-fiction work about two notorious rogue cops charged with murdering for the mob (one for the Luchese crime family, the other for the Gambino family), and the detective who tracked them over seven years.
Bill Dubuque adapted the screenplay and Dan Lin is attached to produce. Padilha's "Robocop" remake is still in production ahead of a release next year.

Director Jose Padilha is heading back into the crime thriller world. The filmmaker first broke onto the scene with his Brazilian crime pics Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within before landing the directing gig on MGM’s RoboCop remake, and now Heat Vision reports that he is next set to direct the true crime thriller The Brotherhood for Warner Bros. The pic is an adaptation of Guy Lawson and William Oldham’s book The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia and centers on two corrupt detectives who secretly worked for two crime families for years while throwing cases, scrapping evidence, and even killing for the mob. Oldham—another detective—eventually brought the two to justice after tracking them for nearly a decade. The story most definitely has a Departed feel to it, and should make for a rather intriguing crime drama. Dan Lin »

Early word was that Jose Padilha, the Brazilian filmmaker whose unbelievably intense "Elite Squad" films had cinema-goers chewing off their fingernails the world over, had kind of a rough time on his big budget remake of "RoboCop" for MGM. Of course reports varied, but it seems the experience on that $100 million film wasn't too painfully awful, since he has signed on for another American project, and this time it's a true crime story called "The Brotherhood" for Warner Bros. The project is based on the book "The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia," a nonfiction saga written by Guy Lawson and William Oldham. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the book concerns two very corrupt cops, each working for a different crime syndicate, who would sabotage cases, steal or destroy evidence, and even murder for their respective gangster overlords. He’s been busy wrangling the future of law enforcement with the RoboCop remake, but for a possible next film, Jose Padilha has his eye on The Brotherhood.A real-life memoir by former cop William Oldham (who wrote the tome with Guy Lawson), The Brotherhoods: The True Story Of Two Cops Who Murdered For The Mafia tells the tale of two corrupt detectives, one belonging to the Gambino crime family, the other the Luchese family. Together, the pair threw cases, tipped off suspects, destroyed evidence and, as the title suggests, killed on the orders of their bosses.Oldham was the police officer who tracked the two men and brought them to justice in a controversial trial. It all has the flavour of a real-life take on The Departed.Bill Dubuque adapted the book for Warner Bros. and Padilha is in talks to direct. It feels like the right blend of director and material, »

David Dobkin is busy assembling his cast for The Judge and the newest addition comes in the form of Vera Farmiga. The actress will join Robert Downey Jr., who plays a big shot lawyer who heads home for his mother’s funeral, only to find that his father (played by Robert Duvall) is the prime suspect. Farmiga’s exact role hasn’t been specified but the vague details that were given state that she’ll play “a hometown girl who shares a history” with Downey Jr.’s lawyer character. How she’ll factor into the story though is still unknown.
Though not a household name, Vera Farmiga is a likeable actress and can currently be seen in the A&E series Bates Motel. She’s given great performances in films like The Departed and Up In The Air and I always enjoy seeing her show up on screen. She can »

Thus far the casting for David Dobkin's upcoming dramedy The Judge has been all about the boys. In addition to Robert Downey Jr., who has been attached to the project since last April, the last week has seen the film sign on Robert Duvall, Vincent D'onofrio and Billy Bob Thornton. The latest addition, however, finally adds a pair of X chromosomes to the mix. Vera Farmiga, who was just featured in the debut episode of the Bates Motel television series, based on Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, has signed on to play the female lead in The Judge. Scripted by Bill Dubuque, Nick Schenk, and David Seidler, the film centers on a big-city lawyer (Downey Jr.) who returns home after spending years away to attend his mother's funeral, but is shocked to learn that his father (Duvall), the local judge, is suspected of murdering her. Robert Downey Jr. spent a lot of time looking for an actor to play his father in the upcoming David Dobkin film The Judge. Late last year the Iron Man star was trying hard to get Jack Nicholson to join, but when those plans fell through they signed Robert Duvall for the part. The casting news has been rolling in since, with it just being reported earlier today that Vincent D'onofrio has joined the production, and now we have yet another report to share. Billy Bob Thornton, who just recently worked with Duvall on his directorial effort Jayne Mansfield's Car, is now in talks to play one of the central antagonists in the upcoming film, according to Variety. Based on an original script by Nick Schenk that was rewritten by Bill Dubuque, The Judge tells the story of a hot-shot lawyer (Downey Jr.) who returns to his hometown after being »

Director David Dobkin is best known for helming raunchy, broad comedies like the smash hit Wedding Crashers and the underrated switcheroo pic The Change-Up. But for his next venture, he's diving into drama.well dramedy anyway.with Warner Bros' The Judge. Penned by Nick Schenk (Gran Torino) and revised by Bill Dubuque, the film will star Robert Downey Jr. as a successful lawyer who returns home following the unexpected death of his mother. Once there, he discovers his estranged father is suspected of having murdered her, and the two reconnect while trying to clear the family name. Downey had campaigned for Jack Nicholson to play his father in this flick. But once Nicholson said no, producers wrangled another storied heavy hitter in Robert Duvall. THR reports the latest to join this already impressive cast is Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Vincent D'Onofrio, who has been steadily scoring film roles since »

Robert Downey Jr can pretty much do anything he wants film-wise these days, even without a high tech suit of armour to help. But one thing he apparently cannot do is convince Jack Nicholson to co-star with him in new drama-comedy The Judge. Fortunately for Rdj, Robert Duvall is willing to step in. The Change-Up’s David Dobkin is directing this one, working from a script by Nick Schenk, David Seidler and Bill Dubuque. The Judge finds Downey Jr as a successful lawyer (bet he’s slick and quip-happy too) who returns to his small-town home for his mother’s funeral. There he discovers that his dad (Duvall), the town’s judge, is the top suspect in her murder. While Iron Man 3 is just around the corner to kick off the summer, Robert Downey Jr. is getting ready to step out of the superhero spotlight for his next project. As we heard last year, Downey is leading The Judge, a drama with some comedy thrown in from writer Bill Dubuque (an up and coming writer with projects like The Accountant and The Headhunter's Calling in development) which tells the story about a big-city lawyer (Downey) who returns home after the death of his mother to learn his estranged father, a judge, is suspected of her murder. Now THR says Robert Duvall will play the patriarch judge in the film. In addition to discovering the truth about this case, Downey will reconnect with his family after walking out on them so many years before. The dynamic between the spunky Duvall and Downey's dry, sarcastic nature should be something to »

According to Variety, Robert Duvall will be joining Robert Downey Jr. in director David Dobkin’s The Judge. Though the filmmakers were initially pursuing Jack Nicholson for the role, those negotiations fell through and now Duvall is stepping in.
For those unfamiliar with the film, the dramedy, written by Bill Dubuque (with former drafts being penned by David Seidler and Nick Schenk), will follow Downey Jr.’s character, “a big-time lawyer who returns home after his mother dies, only to learn that his father — who happens to be the judge (Duvall) — is a suspect. Working to get to the bottom of the case gives him the opportunity to reconnect with his family.”
With Duvall and Downey Jr. set for the lead roles, the focus now turns to finding an actress for the part of the ex-girlfriend. Word has it that Vera Farmiga and Elizabeth Banks are both in contention but as of now, »

Robert Downey Jr. had a very specific vision of who he wanted to play his father in the upcoming dramedy The Judge. Back in November of last year we learned that the Iron Man star was hoping that Jack Nicholson would be willing to the take the part, which would see him playing the eponymous character. Unfortunately Downey Jr. didn't get his wish, but the project has landed another Oscar winner instead. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Robert Duvall is now attached to star in The Judge, which is being directed by David Dobkin. The story, which was originally scripted by Nick Schenk and recently rewritten by Bill Dubuque, follows a hot-shot lawyer (Downey Jr.) who, after a long time away, returns home after the sudden death of his mother. When he arrives, however, he is shocked to learn that his estranged father (Duvall) is suspected of murdering her. »
