Win Passes To The Advance Screening Of Sleepwalk With Me In St. Louis

5 September 2012 9:01 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Winner of a 2012 Audience Award at Sundance, comedian Mike Birbiglia wrote, directed and stars in this sincere and hilarious film, based on his off-Broadway show and bestselling book. It’s also the first movie co-written by Ira Glass and co-produced by “This American Life.” The story: when an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.

Sleepwalk With Me features Lauren Ambrose (“Six Feet Under”), Carol Kane (“Taxi”), James Rebhorn (“Meet the Parents”), Cristin Milioti (star of Broadway’s “Once”), plus comedians Marc Maron, Kristen Schaal, Wyatt Cenac, Jesse Klein, Henry Phillips and David Wain.

“A funny and insightful movie. I could have watched it for ten hours.”

Check out our conversation below.

Can you tell us more about the script writing process?

Mike Birbiglia:  The script process was about two years.  There was a bunch of shifts. My brother Joe Birbiglia, Seth Barrish, who directed the one man show, and Ira Glass, who I developed a lot of stories with over the years for This American Life.  Yeah, it was interesting because as »

On Wednesday night the Brooklyn Academy of Music kicked off its 4th annual BAMcinemaFest, a 10-day showcase of independent films culled from Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, SXSW, and other festivals from around the world. Highlights from this year’s lineup include Sundance sensation “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” controversial true crime story “Compliance,” found-footage horror anthology “V/H/S,” psychosexual comedy “Nobody Walks” and many, many more. Check out the full line-up here. While some might have guessed ‘Beasts’ to be an obvious choice to open the fest as it's the film coming off the festival circuit with the most deafening buzz, Bam instead selected Mike Birbiglia’s “Sleepwalk With Me.” After seeing the film, which was set and filmed in Brooklyn, it was clear that it was the perfect choice. Based on Birbiglia’s autobiographical one-man show, the story follows Matt Pandamiglio (a proxy for the comedian), a struggling »
