[Review] Don’t Breathe

18 hours ago | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Twisting the “blind warrior” trope into a simple but possibility-laden premise, Don’t Breathe makes for a very fun little thriller, though it also veers into being exceptionally stupid or eye-rollingly gross (although admittedly, it is sometimes more than one of these things simultaneously). Since mainstream horror is this way almost as a rule, I suppose it’s redundant to call the movie out on this – especially since no one cares about stupidity and grossness is generally a draw (though I refer more to thematic grossness than anything squeam-inducing happening onscreen; more on that in a bit). Since that just leaves the fun, this review is technically a ringing endorsement!

Stephen Lang is the blind warrior in question, a Gulf War veteran who’s too busy looking to terrorize the idiot teens trying to rob him to impart any martial arts instruction or life lessons. Said teens – Rocky (Jane Levy »

Blind Film Critic Reviews ‘Don’t Breathe,’ Reveals Visually-Impaired Character’s One Unrealistic Trait

19 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Tommy Edison, better known on YouTube as the Blind Film Critic, this week reviewed a movie of particular relevance: “Don’t Breathe,” a thriller about three thieves who break into a visually-impaired veteran’s home. Edison is highly positive on Fede Alvarez’s film overall, granting it 3.5 out of 4 “eyes wide open,” and says that, with one exception, “I don’t think it was unrealistic compared to other blind characters in movies.”

“There’s one point where he’s doing a lot of sniffing, right, to see if he can figure out where these people are in his home and to see if he can get it with his nose. I don’t know,” Edison says. “He probably uses his nose a little more in that situation than I would, »

Don't Breathe Review: Tense Horror Without the Cheap Thrills

19 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

2016 has been a fairly disappointing year for big blockbusters, but overall, a very good year for mainstream horror. But we're not done yet. After making his mark with the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi's classic Evil Dead, director Fede Alvarez has returned with a very original story in Don't Breathe. With a minimal cast and a unique idea, he has managed to craft a very effective, very tense horror experience that occupies a space seldom ventured in today's modern horror movie landscape.

Don't Breathe revolves around three young adults who live in Detroit, where they are struggling to find a way out of their current situations. So, they decided that robbing houses is a good idea. When a score too good to pass up comes around, they decided to take some extra risk in order for a big score. The three decided to rob the house of a wealthy blind man in the night, »

‘Don’t Breathe’ Director Fede Alvarez Isn’t Playing by Hollywood’s Rules

23 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Few indie filmmakers today have broken the rules of Hollywood like Uruguay-born horror director Fede Alvarez. Rather than parlaying a low-budget first film into a job directing a franchise horror movie, Alvarez flipped the script, remaking “The Evil Dead” as his debut film before going on to direct an original horror feature. How did Alvarez land the “Evil Dead” job without any feature film credits to his name?

“It was just based on Sam Raimi being insane and trusting me to write and direct that movie based on a short that I made,” Alvarez told IndieWire in a recent interview. The writer-director of 1981’s “The Evil Dead,” Raimi served as a producer on the 2013 remake.

Can Suicide Squad Win Its 4th Box Office Weekend in a Row?

23 August 2016 10:18 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last weekend was supposed to knock Suicide Squad from atop the box office, with three new releases hitting theaters after this superhero blockbuster suffered a massive 67.4% drop during its second week of release. Thanks to all three of those new releases (Ben-Hur, War Dogs and Kubo & the Two Strings) underperforming, Suicide Squad three-peated to become the #1 movie yet again. Now it looks to close out the month of August with a clean sweep. Standing in its way are three newcomers, Sony's horror-thriller Don't Breathe, The Weinstein Company's boxing biopic Hands of Stone and Lionsgate's action sequel Mechanic: Resurrection. If our predictions ring true though, we believe Don't Breathe does have a chance to win the last weekend of the summer.

It has certainly been an unusual summer box office, which closes out on a rather weird note. All three of these new releases are rated R. R-rated movies »

We might not be anywhere near Halloween yet, but something spooky is coming our way this week with the release of Don’t Breathe.

Don’t Breathe, if you haven’t watched any of the terrifying trailers yet, follows a group of friends that set out to rob a wealthy blind man while he’s still in the house. Little do they know, he’s actually a serial killer. Talk about bad luck.

Jane Levy, Stephen Lang, and Dylan Minnette star in Don’t Breathe, and it seriously looks like one of the scariest things we’ve seen in a long time. And as pretty big horror fans, that’s saying something.

Filled with 88 minutes of heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thrills, Fede Alvarez‘s “Don’t Breathe” puts a unique spin on the horror genre, placing three young burglars at the mercy of a blind war veteran.

The horror pic had a special screening at the Silent Movie Theatre on Sunday, bringing out stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and the blind man himself, Stephen Lang.

“I never conceived of him as a horror figure or villain,” Lang said. “I saw him as a guy who was close to the brink of despair and was fighting for his own form of survival. So when that world gets invaded I think he takes a stand.”

Lang said he found a connection with his character, who has been brutalized mentally and spiritually. “I wanted a chance to defend the character and be an advocate for the character and in so doing you can add depth »

Don’t Breathe. Don’t even blink, for the new, red band trailer for Fede Alvarez’s domestic thriller has emerged online, and it’s enough to have you sleeping with the lights on – ducktape and all.

Three years on from Alvarez’s divisive reimagining of The Evil Dead, the Uruguayan filmmaker is back with another, er, breathless white-knuckle ride that finds Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto as three schemers out to break into the homes of wealthy people and do away with their plundered loot. However, their latest mark, a blind war veteran played by Stephen Lang, goes off the rails rather fast after the trio make a shocking discovery.

Twisted Red Band Trailer For ‘Don’t Breathe’ Shows the Horrors of Robbing the Blind

11 August 2016 8:53 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After an initial trailer that neatly set-up with the premise of Fede Alvarez‘s Evil Dead follow-up Don’t Breathe — despite possibly spoiling the treat of going unaware into the film’s mad conceit — a new red band (aka Nsfw) trailer has been unleashed. While it is rather expertly constructed, playing with the recent trend of cutting trailers in a musical, momentous manner, it reveals quite a lot of new imagery and plot beats. In other words, I’d advise staying away from this trailer if you plan to see the film when it opens in a few weeks.

The bare bones conceit of the film is as follows: three friends need money — including Evil Dead’s Jane Levy, who wants to leave her hometown behind — and decide to rob a blind man’s (Stephen Lang) house. Once inside, they realize that, “just because he’s blind, don’t make him a saint, »

Crazy New Red Band Trailer for Blind Man Horror Film 'Don't Breathe'

10 August 2016 4:34 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"How many of you are there?" Sony has debuted a wicked new red band trailer for Fede Alvarez's Don't Breathe, the horror thriller about a blind man who seeks revenge on a group of teens who break into his house and try to mess with him. This is a crazy cool, twisted concept for a film and it seems like it's actually pretty messed up with the footage they show in this trailer. The cast features Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang as the badass blind dude who seems to have a very demented side to him. This is an impressive trailer, the way it's cut together and the "f**cked up" dialogue all helps make it eerie but effectively enticing. Not your typical trailer editing, but this actually works well. Take a look below. Here's the new red band trailer for Fede Alvarez's Don't Breathe, »

Don’t Breathe, 2016.

Directed by Fede Alvarez.

Starring Jane Levy, Stephen Lang, Dylan Millette and Daniel Zovatto.

Synopsis:

But when the blind man turns out to be a serial killer, the group must find a way to escape his home before they become his newest victims.

A good premise can get you most of the way towards a good movie, or at the very least an interesting one. But a premise, bear in mind, is just the starting point. There’s a lot of work to be done taking that premise and working it to its full potential. Don’t Breathe has a very interesting premise, a twist on the classic »
