Film Review: ‘Another Evil’

30 March 2016 6:39 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Supernatural pests prove less problematic than the plain old human kind in “Another Evil.” Writer-director Carson Mell’s microbudget debut feature finds a family’s vacation home beset by spirits, only to discover that the professional exorcist they hire is even harder to get rid of. This offbeat if just mildly amusing mix of fantasy and slackerish comedics should attract some attention at genre fests and in midnight slots before floating off to minor home-format prospects.

Successful painter Dan Papadakis (Steve Zissis, “Togetherness”); his wife, Mary (Jennifer Irwin); and their teenage son, Jazz (Dax Flame), are nonplussed to find that their second home in the mountains is being haunted by one or possibly two “entities.” The first purported expert (Dan Bakkedhal) they consult cheerfully advises that the spirits in residence are harmless (if rather grisly in appearance), and should simply be cohabited with rather than eradicated.

It can be difficult differentiating your haunted house movie from the rest of the pack for two reasons. Turns out opening with smart writing and some solid laughs is more than enough to grab and hold viewers’ attention for what’s to come. Dan (Steve Zissis) and his family have come to their new cabin for a relaxing few days away from the city, but part way through a game of charades they discover someone, or something, else »

Ever wonder how to catch a ghost? Ahead of its SXSW debut, Carson Mell’s Another Evil is teased in a new clip that shows one smelly method for trapping the paranormal.

Synopsis: “After encountering a ghost in their vacation home, Dan (Steve Zissis) and his wife Mary (Jennifer Irwin) consult an exorcist. Unsatisfied with the verdict, Dan goes behind his wife’s back to seek a second opinion, and secretly hires Os (Mark Proksch) who promises to get rid of the beings. Os and Dan spend a week together in the vacation home exorcising the “Efd” (Evil Fully Determined) beings, but Dan soon realizes that ridding the home of evil won’t be as simple as it seems.
