Emmys Dream Ballot: The Wild Card Nominees Who Might Actually Make the Cut

12 July 2017 9:13 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

You can’t always get what you want. That’s how the song goes, but it hasn’t stopped us from hoping – not when it comes to the second “X-Files” revival and not when it comes to the 2017 Emmy Awards.

Nominations will be announced Thursday morning from the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood. Anna Chlumsky and Shemar Moore will read the chosen nominees, but until that moment arrives — when dreams are dashed and the cold light of day sets in — the dark horse contenders can still believe.

And we can still believe in them. This year’s Emmy race has been incredibly competitive. With Netflix and Amazon measuring appendages and a packed Fyc calendar from April 1 through early June, there are clearly more deserving vote getters than there will be nominees.

Emmy Contenders 2017: Lead Actress in a Drama

1 June 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With last year’s winner Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) ineligible this year, a spot opened for a new victor to be crowned. Odds are on Claire Foy, who won both Golden Globe and SAG awards this year for her portrait of young Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown.” She could face stiff competition from new contenders Mandy Moore, whose done great work on new show “This Is Us,” and Evan Rachel Wood, who stars as a very human android in “Westworld.” Also debuting this year was “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a showcase for Elisabeth Moss’ talent. With seven previous noms, Moss has never won. Likely to repeat their nominations from last year are Viola Davis (“How to Get Away With Murder”) and Claire Danes (“Homeland”) both of whom have won for their characters before. Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) and Keri Russell (“The Americans”) were all nominated last year as well, and »

TV Deathwatch: ‘Powerless,’ ‘No Tomorrow’ and More Broadcast Shows That Are Now Officially Canceled

11 May 2017 6:37 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Many series that launched during the 2016-2017 season quickly fizzled, but still were holding onto hope.

From shows like Fox’s “Pitch” to the CW’s “Frequency” and “No Tomorrow,” all of which did not receive back-orders for their freshmen seasons, to NBC’s “Powerless,” which was pulled off the network before its final three episodes aired, the writing has been on the wall — but now, network executives are officially pulling the plug.

Other shows that either were yanked off the air or did not receive additional episode orders, include CBS’s “Doubt,” which was pulled after just two episodes,” medical drama “Pure Genius,” plus ABC’s dramas “Notorious” and “Conviction” — those series still await their final fate. Tragically, Bill Paxton’s “Training Day” on CBS was shuffled around the network’s schedule after the actor’s shocking passing.

Here are the shows that have been nearly cancelled, but are now officially cancelled…

‘Pitch’ Officially Canceled After One Season at Fox

1 May 2017 5:33 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s official: “Pitch” has struck out.

Fox has canceled the baseball drama, after one 10-episode season. Executive producer Kevin Falls tweeted the news on Monday evening, also posting, “Thank you to our faithful fans for trying so hard to save us.”

I'm sorry to tell you that @PITCHonFOX will not be getting a second season. #Pitch

Kevin Falls (@KevinFalls) May 2, 2017

Though “Pitch” was one of the most hotly anticipated new series of the 2016-2017, the cancellation is not a surprise. Despite the early buzz, the baseball drama never connected with viewers, averaging a 0.8 live-plus-same day Nielsen rating in the 18-49 demo and 3 million total viewers per episode. Following its first 10 episodes, Fox did not go forth with a back-order, signaling the imminent cancellation.

Premiering in September 2016, “Pitch” last aired in early December of last year. However, Fox executives remained optimistic about the show, telling reporters in January that no decision had been made yet. “We »

13 Reasons Why Pitch Needs to Be Renewed!

27 April 2017 11:00 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Unfortunately, the fate of Fox's freshman series, Pitch, is still up in the air.

It is arguably one of the best new series of the year, but it has not picked up the fan base and ratings that it deserves. It's a real shame.

Is television ready for a female-driven sports drama? I'd like to think so. Especially when that female is the talented Kylie Bunbury, and her co-star is Mark-Paul Gosselaar. They are just two of the reasons why this series deserves to be picked up.

It would be a travesty if we weren't graced with their talent in such a groundbreaking and inspiring series.

If you're a fan of heartwarming sports family dramas like Friday Night Lights, I urge you to check out Pitch.
