Interview: Actor David Oyelowo Presides Over ‘A United Kingdom’

4 March 2017 4:17 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Actor David Oyelowo is very familiar with portraying a man of consequence put into a difficult leadership role. In 2014, he took on the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Currently, he is in theaters with “A United Kingdom,” which tells the story of an African prince who led his country to a new mindset in the 1950s.

Oyelowo portrays Seretse Khama, the first democratically elected president of the African country of Botswana. To get to that point, he first had to abdicate his right to ascend as king of the country, mostly because he had met and married a white British commoner (Rosamund Pike) while studying in England. Angering both his fellow countryman and the British government (who was the “protectorate” of Botswana), Khama used the exile as a strategy, and inspired his people through his call for acceptance of his situation and autonomy from colonization. »

It’s a small world after all!

On Friday, Downton Abbey costars Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley) and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith Crawley) enjoyed quite the magical reunion at one of the happiest places on earth — Disneyland!

The British stars, joined by Michael Fox, Jessica de Gouw and Kelly Paterniti, embraced hugs from the lovable Goofy outside of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at the Anaheim, California theme park.

Though the BBC show came to an end in 2015, the cast has remained tight with one another.

Recently, the Downton cast, including Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Lesley Nicol, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan and more, »

Movie Review: David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike outshine the filmmaking in A United Kingdom

8 February 2017 10:00 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike have strikingly similar career trajectories. Both England-born actors started out in television in the late ’90s before jumping to feature films in the early-to-mid ’00s, and they both had overdue breakout roles in 2014: She as the title character in Gone Girl, he as Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma (only one of them was Oscar-nominated, but they both deserved it). Perhaps it’s this common ground that helps to make them so convincing as kindred spirits in A United Kingdom. The real-life characters they’re playing have less in common, at least on the surface.

Pike is Ruth Williams, a Londoner who works in an office by day and occasionally accompanies her sister Muriel (Laura Carmichael) to local dances at night. That’s where she meets Seretse Khama (Oyelowo). After a pleasant first date, she finds out that Khama is a prince of Bechuanaland »

Rosamund Pike stars with David Oyelowo in Amma Asante's potent A United Kingdom Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

The last time I spoke with Rosamund Pike was on the opening night of the 52nd New York Film Festival for the World Premiere of David Fincher's Gone Girl, co-starring Ben Affleck. At The Peninsula in New York, we sat down for A United Kingdom conversation on her role as Ruth Williams, the wife of the man who would become the first president of Botswana, Seretse Khama. A betrayal by Winston Churchill, costume designer Anushia Nieradzik, Isabelle Huppert's advice on footwear, Amma Asante's desire to inject female elements into the script by Guy Hibbert, Cédric Jimenez's The Man With The Iron Heart, based on Laurent Binet's novel HHhH, and José Padilha's Entebbe were discussed.

As Meryl Streep acting as Miranda Priestly once famously said in The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” But florals on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet? Nothing short of earth-shattering. At least 10 stars sported the look, including (below, from left): Emily Blunt, wearing a short-sleeved nude Cavalli Couture gown with delicate pink floral embellishment, while Janelle Monae‘s black-and-white Chanel dress featured white flower detailing on her chest, neck and around her wrists. It looks like the Downton Abbey movie will get moving this year, by the sounds of it...

It looks as if those plans for a Downton Abbey movie are coming to fruition. The show finished its televised run on Christmas Day 2015, and a movie revival looks to be coming together at pace.

Back in January, rumours were fuelled by Jim Carter (Top Secret!), who played Carson in the TV show. He told Good Morning Britain that “we’ve been asked to keep ourselves available for dates in the future, but nobody has seen a script”.

Today, CultBox has shared an update from a PR representative of Jeremy Swift (who played Spratt in the show). "Jeremy has also been asked to keep the end of this year free as the Downton movie will begin »
