Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael transformed in geek chic photoshoot

1 October 2015 8:43 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

What on earth would Lady Edith say? Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael looks almost unrecognisable in a geek chic-themed photoshoot.

The 29-year-old actress - who sports thick-rimmed glasses and a knitted tank top in one of the photos for InStyle magazine - also speaks to the fashion publication about her love for Edith and her awe at working with Shirley MacLaine.

"I've always loved her," she enthused of her downtrodden yet determined character. "But there are moments when you have to take a breath from someone who is so unhappy all of the time and remember it's pretend.

"She's catty and vulnerable, but brave and resilient."

On starring alongside Oscar-nominee MacLaine, who played Lady Cora Crawley's brash mother Martha Levinson in the ITV period drama, she recalled: "Our director spoke to us quietly and said, 'Girls, can you look less in awe? She's meant to be your grandmother.'

It's a big Downton Abbey wedding in brand new spoiler photos

1 October 2015 4:25 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Downton Abbey's third episode airing this Sunday.

After years of heartbreak, tragedy and miscarriages of justice, Downton Abbey fans will get to witness some genuine happiness this weekend.

One of the show's most beloved couples will finally tie the knot (hopefully), as Carson and Mrs Hughes walk down the aisle.

New photos from the sixth series' third episode show head housekeeper Mrs Hughes (Phyllis Logan) linking arms with a very happy Carson (Jim Carter), and for once they're not wearing their servants' uniforms.

Many of the show's characters are also seen at the wedding including Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael).

Tom Branson (Allen Leech) is also back in town from America to witness his former colleagues get hitched.

Meanwhile, a crew member has accidentally left an important prop from the show at a public venue, giving away a huge future plot. »

Downton Abbey crew give away a huge spoiler by leaving an important prop lying around

30 September 2015 7:23 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Warning: As you'd expect from the title, this article contains a huge spoiler for Downton Abbey's final series

After last year's water bottle clanger, you'd think the Downton Abbey crew would be more careful this year, but nope.

It transpires that a crew member accidentally left a very important prop in a public building in Bampton, Oxfordshire, where filming took place back in the summer.

The document is apparently a wedding order of service for Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) and a character named Herbert (presumably Bertie Pelham, played by Harry Hadden-Paton). Fans will remember that Bertie asked Edith to a dance in last year's Christmas special.

The member of the public who found the paper decided to hand it into The Sun, showing the fictional character's chosen hymns, prayers and vows. Unless there happens to have been another couple with the exact same names that got married there in July, »

Gary Oldman loves 'Downton Abbey'. The 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' actor left his ''biggest fan'' Michelle Dockery starstruck when he approached her to tell her how much he enjoys watching her show. Asked which celebrity fans have impressed her, she told Look magazine: ''Gary Oldman. It was an event in New York and I was standing there with Laura Carmichael [who plays Lady Edith] and he strode over and just launched into how much he loved the show. ''That was amazing, as I'm his biggest fan ever.'' The 'Harry Potter' actor isn't the only Hollywood star to stun the cast with his fandom. Phyllis Logan »

We filmed the first breakfast scene of Downton, and they brought out a lobster

Laura Carmichael, who plays Downton Abbey’s Lady Edith Crawley, on the show’s ‘ostentatious but historically accurate’ food

Sometimes, filming Downton Abbey’s dining scenes, we might flick a pea, out of boredom. I shouldn’t really say that because the Carnarvons, who own Highclere Castle, might go mad. We always needed to be very careful because of the priceless paintings, but had fantasies of great food fights.

Growing up in Southampton, every Sunday involved a roast or shepherd’s pie lunch during which all the family debated politics. We’re all lefty liberals who feel much the same about everything but we’d fight over the smallest details. Me and my older and younger sisters would fight over spare crackling or Yorkshire pud. I was the one who helped Mum, an NHS radiographer, with cooking. I remember making my first macaroni cheese at age 10 and her being incredibly grateful. »

Kate Middleton "Overstayed" Her Visit to Downton Abbey?! ''She Was Having Such a Good Time''

Kate Middleton may have been "very pregnant" when she visited the set of Downton Abbey in March, but that doesn't mean she didn't give the cast and crew her undivided attention. "We weren't sure what to expect really," Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, told me yesterday at BAFTA-la's pre-Emmys Tea Party at the Sls Hotel. "We all got quite shy and she was sort of leading the conversation. "It was lovely," she continued. "She's so normal. I know everyone says that but she really does try to make everyone feel at ease." What did they talk about? "We all lost our minds," Carmichael admitted. "We started talking to her about the »

Laura Carmichael is ''delighted'' with the final series of 'Downton Abbey'. The 29-year-old actress - who plays Lady Edith Crawley in the ITV period drama - has revealed that while she's devastated the show is coming to an end, she's happy with the way creator Julian Fellowes has tied up the storylines. Asked how they manage to keep the plots a secret, Laura said: ''I think there's an element that people don't want to know ... And Julian, he's very clever. He knows what you want but he's not going to give it to you in the way that maybe you'd expect. »

Prepare for romance, drama and tears in Downton Abbey series 6 promo

29 August 2015 12:23 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

If the new promo for Series 6 of Downton Abbey is anything to go by, we're in for an emotional farewell to the Granthams, Crawleys and their servants.

Filled with scenes such as butler Carson packing away his room, belongings cleared out of Downton and reflective conversations, surely there won't be a dry eye in the house (or should that be Abbey)?

The promo starts with Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) telling Carson (Jim Carter): "If I could stop history in its tracks maybe I would. But I can't Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time."

A sure sign of times moving away from grand families keeping servants, emphasised by Carson removing his name label from his door (sob!) and packing a suitcase.

In other scenes, it appears there could be a surprise return of someone for Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), a romantic interlude between Carson and Mrs »

'Downton Abbey' Final Season Spoilers: 'Not Everyone Will Have a Happy Ending'

3 August 2015 3:33 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

"Downton Abbey" Season 6, aka the final season, premieres Sunday, January 3, 2016 on PBS. We are expecting somewhat of a satisfying conclusion -- with weddings, reunions, and other stuff to give us the happy sniffles -- but it sounds like some sad tears may be shed as well.

"We've got 20 or so main characters. There's a lot to get done in these final nine episodes," executive producer Gareth Neame told TV Guide. "This is ultimately a happy show that people love, so I don't think we're going to end with lightning striking the house and the house is exploded or something. But not everyone will have a happy ending."

Is someone going to die? Not the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), we hope. Or worse, will more anvils just fall in poor Edith's head while Mary laughs? #TeamEdith4Life

'Downton Abbey' could be turned into a film. The ITV period drama's producer, Gareth Neame hasn't ruled out the possibility of making the show into a feature film and thinks it would be a ''wonderful thing''.
